Cannon
Nov 20 2009, 08:13 AM
I'm posting this to let the community know what we plan to do with the server hardware in the near future.
The server is being kindly hosted free of charge by a company in Denmark. The situation is somewhat like majkp's situation in that the company is not a server hosting company. The server host and the internet provider are aware of the DDOS attacks.
As has been noted elsewhere, the server itself is running on a temporary machine. This machine is a little limited for this task so the number of players we can support will be less than normal. We're not sure how many players.
In 7-10 days, a new server machine will be available and the server will be moved on it. This machine is much more capable and might be used as the permanent server. This was the machine we intended to bring the server up on but for various reasons it was not available immediately. We had a choice to wait 7-10 days or bring the server up on a more limited temporary machine and we chose to bring it up now.
Once we are happy with our new server host (and our server host remains happy with us), we'll ship the old server to Denmark and either make it the primary server or use it as a backup. If for some reason we have to change hosts again, a number of people contacted me with offers to host and I'll explore these. Alternatively we'll move to paid hosting and fund this through donations and the admin team will underwrite the cost.
The only other thing to note is that I'm now actively working on the server universe split software so that we can make better use of these multicore machines.
I'm wondering if the database restore missed some character files. I'll check this soon and ensure any of the missing characters are restored.
You are welcome to ask other questions in this thread.
EDIT: A few other things...
1. The server has a new IP. See the server status thread for the connection information.
2. I'll be publishing an update to the mod to include the new IP address (for us and other servers) in the next few days. I'll probably do this as soon as server is replaced with the faster one.

Thanks for the update and for pretty much everything else!
Will go check out the server now, haven?t had time yet and I?m a bit concerned a bunch of my characters might have been deleted (due to inactivity, I haven?t had a computer or time to play much and I still really don?t)...

I have only one question Cannon. Upon logging in yesterday, I found out missing lots of cash and reputation bars. I wonder, if it is result of the attack, since it seems the back-ups were at least one two days old. I am by no means complaining, just curious how it is with it.
Oh and MANY THANKS for the work you do for us guys!

Is the server with a community member or someone completely not involved in Discovery?

Its great Discovery found a free host. These admins put enough time and effort into keeping the freebe running. They shouldn't need to pay cash as well.
I can't wait to learn more about the split universe add-on. Is the DAM remote manager still in the makings?
Cheers guys

The server is being hosted by a friend of a community member. This friend is not playing Freelancer, but has
granted our community member full access to his company's server room at all hours.
He has also guaranteed that the Discovery RP 24/7 server(s) will be hosted free of charge* there for as long
as necessary.
* Free, except for a yearly donation of 6 Czech beers to the server host

I cannot find it on the server List, even though all the others are showing up.

I heartily approve of that payment situation. Czech beer should be legal tender everywhere.
Admins, thank you so much. I was able to hop on last night and finally make my characters. I have a nice warm feeling inside.
Cannon, thank you for all your work, and I can't wait to see how the universe split works out. The things you are doing with an extremely dated server program are truly amazing.

The off-site back-ups were approximately 14 hours old at the time things went down. So basically what you did on the last day since the final server restart is gone. However, before people complain that the Cap VIII they bought is missing - check your character accounts. The money that you would've spent would be there. If there were any trades that occurred between players, please be kind and rewind. As far as the server is concerned, those did NOT happen. And we (the moderators and admins) are NOT going to get involved in those unless it was fraud - the money you thought you spent for that stuff would not have disappeared.

Well, my ship that last logged out in Leeds before the servers was down, logged on in Omicron Delta, on Freeport 11, which I had never visited before.
Apart from that no problems.

Just a thought.
What about having another "free of charge" server running elsewere so that the two work to help against lag (using that prog your making) but in the events of one server breaking down we have 2 servers, each able to hold the entire server if one fails....
Other then that...
GOOD JOB. Appreciate your efforts

Thankyou to all admins, now, this is a very important place for me and my hispanic friends too, since we know we are part of a whole community, our community.
I think that most important is having the chars safe, if we lost some things, these things can be purchased again. the most important is not losing the chars.

I'd send a case of American beer to the new server host by way of thanks, but everyone knows that American beer sucks...

I aint complaining about anything by no means! The few coins I am missing will be just more fun to earn again, that is all. Answer you provided me with is what I was looking for so that is all. The lost things will be regained again. Im not dead cause of it. THanks for answers.

The Sirius Universe shall be split into more than one part, each hosted by a different CPU Core, that way, increasing the number of player slots, and stability issues.
That is, Cannon is trying to do his magic and enable us to have even bigger server, more people online, and multicore support for an ancient singlecore 32bit application.
GO Cannon!

I think I know what your asking.
No, the dual universe thing is not ready as of now. The server is on an alternative machine and you need to check for the new IP, follow cannons instructions. The new equipment is being shipped.
EDIT: Thanks to the admins team for this!

Well, first you got my Kudos, Thanks and Dankeschoen for this. How much do you actually have to pay for shipping a whole Server to Denmark? If it's pretty expensive I would gladly donate some cash if it is still avaible.
My parents and Sister will be in Denmark next year, they could bring some german beer

My guess is that the jumpgates and holes to the other side of the split universe will be blocked, in the same manner as the jumpgates are blocked from being used to yo-yo back and forth between systems now.

Well, its the only logical way of doing it.
Server one . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Server two
200 people ---------split border --------- 150 people incl. Schlurbi.
You want to go to the other side with your load of cargo from this side. You arrive at a jumpgate/hole that leads to the other side of the split. The server on the other side has no free slots.
Ergo the jumpgate/hole to the other side can't let you through, untill such time there is a slot available on the server. When someone on other side logs off, or jumps to the same side of the split universe as you are waiting in, the jumpgate/hole activates.
No other way to implement it as far as I can see.
