Simple question: If you could change one thing in Freelancer - Discovery what would you change?

Now this threat is not for discussion if something would be possible or not just post what you want to change and why but keep it at that.

Your changes can be anything from a game mechanic to in game lore changes.

As for my one change:

I would change the chat system,

- A as you type nickname search
- To only included nicknames you have PM'ed this session in the chat bar when you hit the up and down keys instead of EVERYONE.
- Show the players info card on mouse over
- Add a nickname list to the left of the screen which can be minimized to a icon similar to the minimize for weapons and location list.
- Automatically make the person you have selected the nickname to pm to when you hit enter
- Increase the maximum allowed characters in a single message to at least double.
- Automatically make you reply to the last person who you pm'ed when you hit enter.
- Right mouse on nickname gives you a drop down list of 5 default messages which can be set by the player.

Reason: The current chat system is not very easy to use, finding someone in in a 180+ user list is a bitch and a lot could be done to make it more sophisticated and easier to use.

Well that is my change.. what would you change?
Korny Head
I'd remove combat NPC's. (Except for Guard ones) And I will not stop saying that until they're gone rtfm.gif I'm just -extremely- annoyed...
Slartibartfast
If I could nerf the mob mentality of some...

*sighs*
Naturalist Fouche
The chat implementations and stuff would be hard.. (If at all possbile)

That would take some reverse engineering to the actual game exe's and dll's.. Which i'm sure Cannon is good with smile.gif

My Thoughts on the topic:

-Take away NPC CD's.. Except Guard npc's ofcourse.
11/10
Change the company that published it to Origin systems.

I would make Nanobots heal your ship at a slow, continuous rate; not just instantly. It's kind of annoying when your trying to blow someone up and they have 1 block of HP, only to have them spam the 'g' key so their HP will go right back up to maximum angry2.gif

remove armors and reduce 4 hour rule...

shorter fights give you a shorter penalty.

Wolfs Ghost

I'd "kill" the invite only factions and the player only factions.
Thexare
I have more realistic goals than "straightening up the community" and "rewriting the chat system".

I'd completely revisit "civilian" technology. More diverse, more capable (guns; ships are fine mechanically), more variety, more accepted - even seen on some NPCs.

I like diversity.

- Show the players info card on mouse over

Bad idea. Some are pretty damn long. Better to have it as a new tab on the cargo scan.
Poltergeist
I would remove the Minirazor, and bring back the old torpedo system, with normal speed not the current one, the launch is delayed and makes it completely useless. Also add an emp torpedo into game to replace the inferno.

Players who use a weapon with a high damage per second should have a chance to kill or at least damage themselfs with it, like with the current missles/mines. If you get a cd in the face....Boom!

Also decrease the cruise distruptor's explosion range. Could keep the cd+mine trick but it would be a lot harder.
Trakais
Add bountyhunt cmd.

You do realize that the Train Cruise Disruptor got its name for a reason, right?
Death.RunningVerminator
I'd remove the clothing of every female NPC.

Real Answer: Honestly, i like it here. I don't see much wrong with Disco Freelancer.. so, why would i want to remove anything?

Meh.
Xen
Align the trade lanes that face one another. This is really just a minor change, but it would be so much nicer for traders. If two trade lanes meet at a base, and I come out of the top lane of one trade lane, then I shouldn't have to enter the facing trade lane in the bottom lane.

I don't know how hard this would be to implement, but I imagine that it could be easily done.

Just my two cents.
Ice-H
I would reduce the strength of Universal Armor Upgrades. Probably to 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 multiplier at most.
I also like Poltergeists idea for the torpedo system.

. . .
Make it Freelancer 2.0 with all things easily programmable which aren't currently.

(Like you cannot mount *wrong* equipment, Starflier NPC's attacking Battleships, ramming a Liner to give it 90 course correction within 0,1 seconds, NPC's pirating Suppliers for their Supplies outside of the destinatinated station which belongs to the NPC's faction, Mercs being neutral or allied to Military and Unawfuls whilst blowing Militarys Player Capships for Bounties from time to time, 'known' Pirates showing up allied on scanners to Miners due to Freelance rep etc. etc.)

Regards,
Talesin
.:Pandemonium:.
- i would remove the npc bomber patrols in Gallia (its nearly to impossible to trade there, fighter patrols can be repelled)

- make server bigger approx. double size (400 players) even now when evenings is the server full in some systems you hardly can meet someone

- and at last i would add to the mod Daam K'Vosh systems or another maybe new alien species, and hide them like the Unknown with the Shrine was someday...

If you check the topic, it said 'change', not remove. Read.

And I'd change the ship system, more variety of ship types and weapons probably. But that's just what I'd want.
Coriko Lameos
I would make it smaller.

Less systems.

(I would also line up the tradelanes correctly, and change them from vertical to horizontal, where the left lane is always the direction you want to travel in - in Bretonia and Kusari, vice versa in Liberty and Rheinland)

Yes. That is two changes.

Either no planets or bigger ones, if they can't be made bigger then the should just be part of the sykbox. Because the scale they are now is just wrong.

The Bombers, to 4.84.
Exile
Childish hatred between players, both of them or one, over a video game.
Kramer
I would create Privlancer.
Russell
Make space more realistic, gas giants are not as close / closer to the sun then in real space >_>, and not everything is on the same level...

In short, look at how they made space in EVE, and implant that into FL (Sizing it down by A LOT obviously).

Thats how they should make it in Gallia..the mooring points are a different way there, why not trade lanes?

i haz 2 thing biggrin.gif :

1.) remove B/Bs an rebalance everything...

2.) make whole freelancer "realistic sized" *dreams*
Jinx
change ONE thing:

balance everything according to the ROLE it ought to play, not based on fairness / balance etc. building a military is based on UNfairness - the point is to be stronger, more powerful than the other side, not to be a gentleman.

- for that matter, Diablo2 hardcore rules for capital ships. - you die, you re gone ( poof ) - but to make up for it, they are as powerful as they are meant to be. - fighters and bombers can be softcore, but it should take a load of them to take down anything big ( a load = dozens, unless the enemy is a moron )

well - result:

- crying capital ship captains ( as there are crying diablo2 players that just lost their lvl90 chars )
- crying fighterpilots, cause they cannot take down big ships easily anymore

- or - after a longer period of whining and crying - possibly some responsibility of those that are left laugh.gif

oh - for that matter, quickdocks should be removed, and a long docking sequence depending on the size of the ship should be introduced - while the player docking is 100% vulnerable.

Liking that idea very much.
Bombers are the most over powered ship in the game.
Magnificentness
SCALE!!!

That, or make better asteroid fields. *Points at 88flak* No solid pieces that aren't movable, and always have them on some sort of motion. *Points at the massive chunks of ice in certain ice fields* For instance, some of THOSE flying at you big enough to crush you...Do want.

Childish hatred between players, both of them or one, over a video game.

We're all susceptible to it at times, I won't say that I'm not. It's the most annoying part of the game by far. Paranoia, anger, delusions of supremacy. I'd end all that if I could. The actual game is already fantastic, though Jinx's ideas sound really nice too. But the community is both the best, and the worst part of Discovery.

1. Remove all npcs, and introduce 2 wingman commodities: fighter (they fight with you) trader (they trade with you and you get a percentage of the profits)

2. remove the spawning of the 'shootable' rocks

3. these changes would allow a player base of 2000

4. make hegemons work like they should, chewing up asteroids

5. remove ALL tradelanes (boost cruise a little to compensate, see point 9)

6. planets orbiting the sun, so their place in the system is not fixed (this can be done without planet collisions if we take places off the datum plane)

7. bases like Trenton and the Lux Liners actually orbiting the olanet they are on (if it is treated as a permanent spawn, with a fixed patrol path, the planet would actually drag the base/liner with it)

8. rescale the entire mod so the systems are 4x newcastle, but the planets are to scale of the ship

9. remove the cruise limit: in RL if there is nothing slowing the ship down, it would get faster and faster... but it takes time to slow the ship down as well.

10. introduce gravity... if you sit out near manhatten for too long, expect to get dragged into the atmosphere

Beauferd
Make planets WAY BIGGER

Or ships smaller, honestly if you see your self near a planet, you're pretty big.
Cannon
I would change it so that players have complete control over their own factions, bases and reputations with regard to other factions. Players could at will (and with some effort) create their own factions and control system/base ownership. I think this would be very interesting and possibly quite fun.
.Waratah.
I think you should only be able to see ships on your scanners
that are in the same system as you. You should still be able
to see who is on line , but a question mark next to their system
if they are not in your system at the time.
SeaFalcon
Basically close to what cannon said but then more in a transportation logistic manner.

That you can run your own transport company with NPC transport. You can buy transports ships or charter them from other companies and assign them to routes. Also you will be able to assign escort ship and you'll be able to make an insurance against piracy acts against them.

That would be 'in my point of view' so epic.

Although the profit of this should be adjusted.
anyway this ain't gonna happen thats why I play other games which have a more logistic side.
Friday
Implement a Multi-station mod for all ships!

So multiple players could fly on a single ship. This means that one player could fly whilst others use the turrets.

Transports, freighters and some other ships like SHFs or bombers could have a second player controlling rear turrets.

Capital ships could then be correctly balanced - a BS or Cruiser could indeed be made powerful - able to take on half a dozen bombers in a fair fight.

6 players in 6 bombers vs. 6 players in 1 BS = a fair fight.
6 players in 2 cruisers vs. 6 players in 1 BS = a fair fight.

See how awesome this would be?
Nathan (Falcon)
Hm you have a good idea there Friday! What happens if another person logs off?

I would like to change Trade Lane Looks. Something new and exciting.
Friday
Should a person log off - their hardpoints would need to be redistributed to the others.

At the moment - bombers succeed against caps by use of a 'wolfpack' strategy. Whilst the single player cap shoots at one ship (who flies defensively) the others pummel him.

So if a player logged off - sure there would be a disadvantage to the cap ship - just the same as any group of players would have a disadvantage if one of their team logged off during a furball.

Like that has never happened before? wink.gif

Holy bleep.
deluca
1. Remove every trace of phantom ever created. Super powerful almighty group of lolwut pwnage = shift away from role playing and dynamic in-space discussions leading up to the actual battle.

2. The ability to blow up existing stations and destroy tradelanes!!!! Seriously, you've all seen it, npc patrols firing at bases only waiting to get slowly torn apart by the turrets. On this note NPCs should be removed so you're not hauling goods to a base and its suddenly gone. But players should be able to damage bases with the proper equipment/strike team/roleplay/realism (nomad battleship won't destroy all of liberty).

3. Fighter escorts being able to be deployed from player battleships/carriers.

4. Make the cruiser class actually worthwhile in large capship fights

5. Special guns that do extra damage to each ship type for example:

LF guns own Bombers
HF guns own LFs and do decent damage to Bombers
VHF guns own HFs
LF v. VHF = test of piloting. Light fighters would actually have a chance if they outmanuver (this probably exists already, just re-iterating)

This would make dogfights more dynamic and strategic instead of VHFs spraying at eachother.

My two five cents. smile.gif

Really enjoy this idea, it would balance cap ships to fighters,
Maybe add transprts and frieghters in there as well
