The wiki update status - sindroms - 09-11-2012

Added a Loan and Scouting section on the wiki. Still work in progress, but better than a text with no link on the wiki guide page.

Cleaned up the Transports page and creted sub-classes for Civilian Transports, Commercial Transports, Battle Transports, Liners, and Specials (barge). Moved the Liners mini-page into Transports and created a redirect.

Cleaned up the text on the Freighters page and the Fighters page, need to revisit to double check. Moved the 2 repair ships to specials in the Frieghters.

Added Zapp's nomad LSC to the capital ship specials.

Cleaned up the Shields page, added some descriptive text (need to edit) and split the shields table by type. Created redirects for all the ship-specific types (ex "Gunboat Shields").

Created redirects for ship-specific Turret classes (ex "Gunboat Turrets"). So now you can reference them by function instead of class, and if the classes change again you just change the redirect page

Changed the "Weapons" column heading to "Guns/<br>Turrets" which forces the heading to split into two lines and uses less width.

Will visit Bombers, Gunboats and Capital Ships tomorrow. I will split bombers into regular and super heavy. I want to split Capital Ships into Cruisers and Battleships, but not really sure what to do with the current Capital Ships page.

The Frieghters page needs the Turning Speed numbers added. All the other classes have this data so I assume its an oversight. Looks like a lot of math so I will leave it alone and hope that whoever has the converter can fill in the holes.

Keep in mind that splitting ship classes into subclasses and tables makes comparing ship harder. Since there are on definition of transport classes, what's the stropd behind splitting into too many tables? You don't make it more organized, you make it clumsy, in my opinion.

When I come to wiki for ship info I want lo compare ships, not to search where the hell they are and then spend additional time browsing through divided tables.

The ability to sort ships by gun count, cargo space and armor rate is more than enough to see what kind of transport it is.

Plus transport page is mostly used by new players looking for ship and making it harder for them to do so is counter-productive to whole concept of wiki.

So you put the Pirate Train under Commercial Transports. GG. You've also arbitrarily put the Battletransports under a category of their despite the fact that they are only called that by players, not inRP, and rules-wise they are no different from any other transport. This is somewhat inconsistent. Grouping ships according to rules which may only apply on our server is generally frowned on, unless it is non-intrusive (see: references to tech chart cells). With the new layout, you are forcing users to group lists by a cargo size limit. This prevents you from listing ships in terms of cargo size (largest to smallest in a single list), or group by faction, etc - which is the whole point of having such a detailed list page!

There is no such thing as a Civilian Transport. There are transports crewed by civilians, yes, but all transports are manufactured by corporations. Therefore, all transports are both commercial if they are being used for trading, and they are civilian if they are not being used for military purposes. See the issue here? It's like the old Gunboats & Gunships page; the separation of the two categories was completely useless.

All in all, it's usually more appreciated to consult with the other Wiki editors before making drastic changes...

In general I agree with you however there are many classes where people look at function first and then decide on features separately. Should we combine LF/HF/VHF since they are all fighters? Should we combine all freighters and transports? Transports are like fighters, they are bought for their functionality and then features come after, so splitting them by sub-class is the correct way. Also transports are ID restricted so combining <3600 and >3600 serves no useful purpose for comparison. Well, it serves a purpose if you are have a proper ID and want to compare something like the BW DL to a Stork, but that makes no sense either, and at that point you should be able to look at them separately anyway. Battletransports and Liners are functionally different enough to have them separate as well (less than the full 5k because of massive size, hull, guns, etc makes them different from the 5ks)

But putting the BTs back into the commercial transport section is NP and makes some sense. Usually I look at them for the guns and hull but I can see how a beginner would want to compare them to other ships. --done

"Civilian Transport" just refers to "can be used by freelancer ID" and does not require faction ID. If you can think of a better term use it.

And there are IDs with 4200 and 4300 restrictions. Plus you should not base classes on DiscoveryGC ID system as other servers might have different IDs.

everybody starts with freelancer ID, it makes sense to split at 3600, the rest I dont care

Have you consulted about this change with other editors? Or are you on a personal crusade?

The wiki update status - Ursus - 09-15-2012

do you think all LF/HF/VHF/SHF should be in one big table?

The wiki update status - SnakThree - 09-15-2012

Don't avoid the question. But I suppose you have not. Use talk pages or join the Skype chat. Or ask in this subforum. Plenty of options.
