Freelancer in Widescreen - Linkus - 08-31-2008

Firstly, this involves modifying game files so always remember to make a backup before you change any files. (IE, copy it to somewhere else as well etc)

The following was collected from a few websites and abit of my own thinking, so decided to post it here if needed.

To get freelancer working in widescreen in this case 1680x1050 do the following.

1) Go to my documents > my games > freelancer and open prefoptions in notepad. At the bottom it will say [Display] and underneath size= change it to 1680, 1050 or what ever widescreen resolution you use. Not the space in between the 1680, 1050. Now save and exit.

2) Now go to c: > program files > microsoft games > freelancer > DATA . Once there open cameras in notepad

Delete whats there and paste the following.

[WinCamera]
fovx = 63.504809977813375

[CockpitCamera]
fovx = 90
znear = 2.000000

[ChaseCamera]
fovx = 90

[DeathCamera]
fovx = 90

Now save and exit.

3) Now go to c: > program files > microsoft games > freelancer > EXE . Once there open freelancer in notepad.

At about the 9th line down it says size change it to size = 1680,1050 ,or what ever resolution you are using.
Now save and exit.

4) Now go c: > program files > microsoft games > freelancer > FONTS .Once there open fonts in to notepad. Now delete all whats there and paste the following.

[trueType]
nickname = ButtonText
font = Agency FB
fixed_height = 0.038500

Now save and exit.

Now you are all done any ready to play in 1680x1050 ( best for either 20 or 22" wide). Note the options will state the wrong resolution but it will be in 1680x1050.

Also NOTE , for this to work when u load in to game u must enter in to space once for it to work ie just lift off. Not sure why this is it just is.

There you are, not my own work obviously but it is an oh so easy way of getting Freelancer to use whatever resolution you wish, including widescreen.

Works on my 20inch LCD great. And it works without the editing the exe file in step 3), so dont need to b afraid. Also to b honest, I have editet the fonts myself, couse they were a bit funny thin (I was used to bigger and bold ones :D). It works great, except the bugs before first lunching to space.

Freelancer in Widescreen - gekerd - 10-02-2008

work great indeed (stickie?)

Freelancer in Widescreen - Mike_Fire - 11-03-2008

I have a laptop on widescreen with 1280 800 resolution.
I have followed the tutorial and it works. I had to put 1280 800 instead of the one 1680, 1050 in tutorial.
It works great.
Thanks for nice tutorial.

EDIT: Also there is one problem. When I log the option menu (Launch, bar, commodities dealer.....) is hidden on the top of the screen. I can just launch. Then I redock and the the option are back in the right position. Just a little bug maybe because of my resolution

Freelancer in Widescreen - 13CentKiller - 11-03-2008

Will this work on a 19" monitor at 1440 by 900?

Probably not, but just wondering:)

Freelancer in Widescreen - Mike_Fire - 11-03-2008

Here is the SS I made about that bug. The SS are reduced to 1024 768 due o the photobucket reduction.

After login in the multiplayergame. the top menu is missing

After launching and redocking. The top menu shows up

Do you guys know how to fix that bug ?

Known issues/workarounds: The game screen is to tall on game start and station menus cannot be fully seen.
  • If you are in space when you log on it will be fixed as long as the game remains on.
  • If you are docked, you will have to launch from a station and it will be fixed as long as the game remains on.
  • Each time the game is shut down, you will have to do one of the above (in MP or SP, fyi).
DO NOT USE THE "OPTIONS" MENU TO CHANGE SETTINGS AFTER DOING THIS FIX--it will screw it up and usually require a repeat of the cut and paste corrections in order to restore your settings and if its messed up really bad you may not be able to see the buttons for it and have to reinstall.

Freelancer in Widescreen - Mike_Fire - 11-03-2008

Ok I'm gonna check if all the file change are the same. Because I went into option. So maybe it screwed up my FL

Freelancer in Widescreen - Mike_Fire - 11-03-2008

Well that's still the same. Oh I'll get use to it. Anyway that looks great on widescreen. Now my vessel don't get fat on the horizontal as it use to be on resolution non widescreen.

Freelancer in Widescreen - 13CentKiller - 11-03-2008

Would tinkling with the DPI setting on your computer make any difference maybe. Never really understood what that was for.

And can anyone answer my question? Yes or no on the 1440 x 900 @ 60Hz RES?
