Estergebirge: Welcome to Hell [RP Thread] - Tabris - 05-13-2016

Subject: Survey & Development

"It has been some time since we have spoken, not shocking with all that has been happening across Sirius as of late and the increasing threat of the organization known as The Core in Omicron Delta. However the People's Republic has an offer in mind that'll both harm Core interests in the Omega Regions and also potentially provide a bounty of resources for us both.

I speak of course of Omega-55. Recently the Coalition has established itself in the system which we call locally 'New Beijing', Kamchatka Station is the frontier of expansion for our people and we are eager to see it succeed. At present it is orbiting Planet Estergebirge, a world that has shown initial signs of promise as a mining operation with a weakened atmosphere, making it much easier for atmospheric shuttles to travel to and from the planet. However it is as of yet to be surveyed by the Coalition's Ministry of Plenty and with our resources devoted to containing both the alien infestation and suppressing the hostile Core outpost in the area we believe that it is in the best interests to contact your Guild to offer them

The Coalition wishes the planet to be surveyed for any resources that can be mined with current technologies available to the Guild. In exchange the Coalition wishes to co-develop the planet as a mining asset with the IMG. Resources extracted would be shared at a fair rate and IMG would be able to utilize orbiting Kamchatka Station during this operation which has many open spaces at present for IMG to utilize for laboratories and storage for equipment and any resources mined."

Greetings Premier Warner, my name is Marvin Dietrich, I have been authorised by the IMG Guildmasters to organise this on behalf of the IMG. I am the Deputy Station Administrator at IMG's Freistadt Base, in Omega-7.
First, I would like to thank you for contacting us, and can assure you we are interested in this. However before we can send people out to run the survey, we're first going to need more information.
IMG is aware of the existence of Omega-55, but we do not have details of the system. The reports of The Core and alien activity in the system are concerning, and we're going to need whatever maps you can provide showing hazard/hostile areas and jump holes that you are aware of, if we are to begin operating in there.
Additionally, we must be clear about our diplomatic situation. Our support has to be done discreetly. Do you have any reports of ships from organisations operating in the system that we should be cautious about?
Once we have more information to be able to assess the dangers and threats in the system and to properly prepare our envoy for them, we can dispatch a team from Freistadt to begin the survey.
If the survey ultimately determines that it is feasible to mine valuable resources on the planet, we'll need to start delivering equipment/supplies to Kamchatka.
We would also like to thank the Sirius Coalition for supporting us and our Zoner friends during the ongoing Freeport 11/Omicron Delta crisis. Help towards free, peaceful, independent civilians is always a welcome sight.

Marvin Dietrich
Deputy Station Administrator, Freistadt Base

"Ah, Deputy Administrator Dietrich, a pleasure to meet you. New Beijing has a mild infestation of infested humans and a long-range outpost of the terrorist organization The Core as I have said. Thankfully both have been easily repelled by the defenses of Kamchatka and the local Coalition Defense Fleet. One of our scout vessels recently did a probe of the system in question and located potential hazards and other assorted spatial objects that are of interest."

Coalition Data Packet

"Furthermore there appears to be a light Junker presence in the system, however thus far they have been content to leave alone and be left alone. However we are continuing to monitor the hostiles in the area and the Junkers as well. Kamchatka is the newest facility of the Coalition and as such remains highly adaptive to our needs, supporting a Surveying Mission and Mining Operation should not be too difficult as the Coalition is continuously upgrading the station's systems and defenses to ensure security of the people living onboard the station and around it. We hope the Data Packet will be of aid to the IMG and ensures the safety of any member of the guild who wishes to partake in this opportunity to expand the frontier."

Thank you for the report. Clearly there is some danger but it's not beyond what we're prepared to work with.
We request that the SCRA treat this whole project as confidential. We do not want to attract attention to our involvement, it needs to be low-profile.
Would we be working planet-side (we have limited manpower available for this due to other engagements, and this method takes many months) or would the survey be conducted from space in the same way that Odessa was? To get the clearest picture we'd have to do both.
For now, in return, we'd like some combat equipment to arm about 500 indigenous rebels on Nauru, so we are especially interested in equipment needed to fight a superior force in a desert environment. I believe Operations Coordinator Jack Henderson already contacted you separately about Volgograd Ordinance, but our military analysts also came up with this list:
  1. Mines
  2. Rockets and rocket launchers
  3. Assault rifles
  4. Combat armour suits (light desert version)
  5. Explosives & detonators
  6. Protection equipment against WMD attacks
  7. Reconnaissance equipment
Once the details are finalised, we'll sending Survey Teams on a freighter with fighter escort to Omega-55.

"The Best option would be for us to pursue both a planetside survey and an orbital survey utilizing sensitive scanning technology in order to determine the planet's potential. The Coalition is willing to provide physical manpower where needed while the Guild provides the expertise in order to carry out the survey mission naturally as we know the Guild has alot on it's plate at the moment.

As for the request for ordinance, I believe this subject has been touched upon and it is agreeable, the crates tend to include all the equipment listed, you merely have to request the specific environment camos from the Quartermaster on Zhukovsky Station. These should be enough to arm the people of Nauru for a prolonged fight planetside if need be.

We have made space ready for your people to utilize on Kamchatka upon arrival and scouts are being prepared in Environmental Suits to go planetside to determine an optimal landing site for the first surveying teams. "

Thank you for all the information, I believe that everything is in order and we can dispatch the freighter carrying our team and its escorts to Kamchatka soon.
Equipment needed to run the survey from space (like in the Odessa operation) will be arranged via other channels (Sky-P-3 protocol).
We are sending a team to test whether the Volgograd Ammunition fits our needs.

"The Testing-Ranges on Zhukovsky will be ready for your team to test a wide variety of Volgograd Ordinance small arms, should you wish to see explosive ordinance in use however that will require a visit down to the proving grounds on JiangXi itself. While on JiangXi you can observe the use of Power Armour in an unfriendly environment by our trainees in the Coalition Marine Corps.

Furthermore Kamchatka is ready to receive guests when they arrive and is prepared to support the survey efforts as much as possible. If it be for protection or simply refueling/resupplying."

Greetings to the Sirius Coalition,

I captained the ship (Amethyst) that transported the IMG planetside survey team (and all their supplies and equipment) to Estergebirge in Omega-55.

We did this in a single flight alongside the IMG Battlecruiser Biscayne Bay (dispatched from Aland Shipyard in Omega-3) and escort fighters.

The team sent to the planet consisted of 50 people, with experience in surveying and mining planets.
The Amethyst also had some scanning equipment and we assissted the Biscayne Bay with the initial Ionosphere Low Space Survey (ILSS), involving scanning from the upper parts of the atmosphere.
Both the Amethyst and the Biscayne Bay were carrying XT44-Survey Mk II modules, although obviously we had significantly less power and were only able to survey a couple of metres below surface, whereas the Biscayne Bay could see minable materials several kilometres below the surface.

We've submitted our raw data (size measured in Terabytes) to IMG and SCRA scientists aboard Kamchatka Station.
While above the planet, we noticed surprisingly high levels of radiation, and took a significant amount of damage while there. We should be cautious of operating vulnerable ships in this area, even with escorts.
We encountered a Corsair (TBH) ship while in Omega-5 moving towards Omega-41, and a BMM Hegemon was spotted in Omega-55 itself. The Corsair didn't seem interested in us and we were trying to avoid a fight, but we are worried about a potential BMM presence in the systen, which could mean problems for us.

Honourable Premier Ben Warner,

I am Elizabeth Hudson, Commanding Officer of the Battlecruiser/Survey Vessel Biscayne Bay, which was deployed on the initial survey mission to Planet Estergebirge. In close cooperation with the Amethyst, we managed to perform the Ionosphere Low Space Survey (short: ILSS) using high-powered XT44-Survey Module Mk II Geoscanners. The Bay did scans around the equatorial area, then switched to scanning from north to south pole, following the meridians.

ILSS produced roughly 4.700 Exabyte of geological data that were encrypted and are manually transferred to Kamtchatka base for further analysis.

The Amethyst managed to deploy a Survey team to the planet's surface to start work on the ground. The team will be reporting in to Kamtchatka after they set up communications and their equipment in close cooperation with the Coalition forces that were escorting and supporting us on every step of the mission.

We encountered no real threat to security, but we were operating with an interceptor force of 4 fighters that were covering potential enemy positions and approach vectors. Together with the Coalition vessels, we were able to distract or push away every potential threat to our discovery. My Risk Assessment Team is confident that our initial survey operation remained unnoticed by the major O55 players. Corsair forces in Omega 5 did not give chase and were not seen again. The BMM Hegemon in Omega 55 seemed lost, and was kept away from making sensor contact with the planetary group.

The Biscayne Bay and the Amethyst took some minor hull damage due to radiation levels. Assuming that the planet has the same or even higher levels of radiation exposure, we will have to make sure that the ground crews are properly protected. This will take additional equipment to be provided. For the moment, the Biscayne Bay was taken back to Aland Shipyard to have the exact damage assessed. Aland engineers will be able to draw some conclusions from the damage, which might be useful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Rebecca Jameson and I am a Chief Engineer of the Guild. I was given a copy of the raw data that the orbital survey mission commenced by the Survey Vessel Biscayne Bay produced. Most of the scans do not allow for more than geographical assessment of accessibility or difficulty levels of building infrastructure, however there is one very interesting geological structure that looks highly promising.

What you see is the 3-D scan of a mountain ridge that looks very much like an old, likely inactive mountain ridge, geologically similar to sub-marine middle oceanic ridges, however this one has been elevated sufficiently likely million years ago, judging by the massive body of detritus - meaning: erosion material - covering the central valley according to our scans. SC YSF shows 6 kilometers of sandy material. The fault ridges on the sides of the ridges open up good angles to analyze the stratigraphy, however the angles are too bad and the fault lines too chaotic to get any meaningful insights via orbital surveying.

While most basaltic structures are often too young to be of much interest, the west and east mountain ranges have been elevated and eroded sufficiently to expose much older rock formations. Especially in the Axial Disruption Zone very old rock surfaces. Also the areas of the Crestal Boundary Ridges have sufficiently think basalt cover to make access to potential rich resource layers possible. These formations are - when comparing them with similar geological formations - interesting for what you are looking for. That's also why we called one of the moutains Flank Seamount because in a similar structure we have a similar formation. Just that on your planet the ocean is missing and that the formations are likely 200 to 450 million years older.

That's where the problems start, however. There is no way to be sure about what we find there until we have a team of prospectors on the ground. However, while this scan suggests a moderate terrain, the reality looks different. We are talking about hard to access terrain with exactly zero existing infrastructure.

The profiles of T181 and T183 look promising and somewhat accessible, if SC YSF can be transformed into a landing zone. Starting north of the ADZ faulted ridges to avoid another obstacle between the lower inner valley and the main ridge, T460 and T178 also might be interesting enough and accessible at the same time.

So, if you are interested in exploring what might be in the Argu Tagh Range (the western ridge) and Ugam Range (the eastern ridge), you will have to create some basic infrastructure that allows for the operation of airborne units that can insert heavy mining equipment, as well as accomodation for prolonged stay of up to 50 Guild experts. We are talking months to get a superficial view of what the two Ranges might hold.

The Guild currently does not have the resources to assist in the construction of infrastructure, nor do we have interplanetary transport capacities for this sort of climate and terrain. However, if the Coalition can prepare the basic amenities and the necessary infrastructure, I can send a forward team to start the work on the prospection sites - depending on accessibility.

I know that you would have likely hoped for more specific and better news, but this is everything that a scientific review of the initial data can yield. So, to be honest, you have to make a decision on whether you want to invest into an infrastructural buildup with a fair chance of finding something useful, or whether you decide to not take the chance or risk - depending on the point of view. My gut feeling says that there should be at least something, whether it is worth exploiting is a different question.

Rebecca Jameson
Chief Engineer
