Commission of Inquiry-Dagger Outpost - Albrecht - 08-15-2018

Commission of Inquiry

By order of the Imperial Guildmaster

Report of the commission of the events surrounding Dagger Outpost

Prologue

By order and authority of the Imperial Guildmaster William Rotschild the commission is henceforth charged with the duty to investigate and provide assessment of the events surrounding Dagger Outpost in the Omega-55 system and the current state of affairs within the system itself and to provide recommendation on the status of that system

Events

Whereas the morning of the 15th day of August 824 A.S a surprise attack by forces known as ‘wilde’ struck at Dagger Outpost in force with the intent to either destroy the station or to force the evacuation of the station or to render the station otherwise inoperable. Wilde forces struck at the outpost with such force that the external defence grid and security wings were overwhelmed. With several wilde assault wings on approach, the command of Dagger did initiate battlestations and sent out a distress beacon to any available forces within Omega-55. During the battle, heavy external and internal damage was received by the outpost, such damage was great enough to cause power loss and communication loss to outside forces. The final recorded message transmitted via long wave transmitters was that the Order Battleship Canaan was inbound.

It should be noted that at the time, core forces were unaware of the Battleship’s intention yet were unable to follow normal protocol of ‘Assume hostile’ given the severity of the attack. With the communications array out of commission, the arrival of the Order Battleship and the defence systems failing, outpost command ordered all personnel to prepare to receive and repel boarders.

However, as it turns out the Order forces were there to assist in the defence of the station, and showed no intention of assaulting Dagger or engaging any remaining fighter wings attempting to defend the station. Eyewitness reports and survivor accounts all agree to the statement that the Order assisted in the defence of Dagger and were not there to engage, harass or otherwise threaten the security of the station. Unfortunately the distress messages seem to have been subject to misinterpretation or were not transmitted clearly due to pilots in the deeper Omicrons believing that the Canaan was responsible for the attack. Given the history between the Core and the Order, this is not entirely unexpected but (as it should be stressed) was not the case in this particular event.

During the fighting, the wilde targeted the Canaan in response to it’s arrival and it’s increased threat (due to Dagger sustaining prior damage). The Order Battleship received heavy damage throughout the battle but continued in it’s defence of the station. Damage to the outpost's communications array prevented the command staff from sending out a stand down order to the arriving Battleship Mars, which assumed the Canaan had been responsible for the attack. Acting on orders to defend the station, but believing that the Order was either acting under the influence of the Wilde or taking advantage of the situation the Wilde had created, the Mars engaged the Order Battleship. By this time the Wilde had been mostly driven off and the situation improved to the point where the initial assessment of the station’s structural integrity could be assessed. The Canaan fled the scene under heavy fire from the Mars who pursued the Osiris battleship into the Omega-58 system. Due to damaged sustained in the defence of Dagger as well as that caused by the Mars, Canaan was eventually run down and ultimately destroyed. During the intervening time, a catastrophic decompression occured on deck D-9 which resulted in the loss of most of the command structure.

After action assessment

The condition of the station has since improved due to the influx of repair materials and the evacuation of wounded personnel, however security and overall readiness is still not at pre-assault levels and the casualties sustained have left the station dangerously low on manpower. The structural integrity assessment has yet to be fully completed but initial reports show a loss of life support on a number of decks, the hanger capacity has been severely reduced and the facilities and people required to bring the station back to optimal operating capacity are lacking considerably.

Much thought has been given to the intention of the Wilde. As mentioned before, the obvious intent is to ensure that this station does not hinder whatever plans or operations they are conducting (or may seek to conduct). In this regard they have failed, however they have weakened our position within this system all the same. Another theory is that the Wilde were attempting to distract us from some other operation that may have been going on at the same time. Evidence of such a hypothesised operation has yet to be obtained due to the recalling of all long range patrols for increased security.

A third theory is that the Wilde were deliberately attempting to lure the Core and Order into a conflict, thereby weakening both parties. The loss of a battleship weakens the Order's position and the current state of Dagger leaves it open to another assault which we would be unlikely to survive. Thus our position is equally weakened. Alternatively, with the destruction of a Battleship at the hands of one of our own, the Order is likely to seek revenge and/or refuse to ever aid in the defence of one of our bases in future. With the weakened position of Dagger and the geographical position in which it is stationed, it is also likely that either the Corsairs or the Red Hessians may try an assault of their own. Given that we would never willingly surrender the station, a confrontation would be likely, in such an engagement only one party is likely to benefit. The Wilde have made it their business to ensure humanity remains divided, probably because a divided enemy is far easier to defeat than a united one. This attack on Dagger might very well permanently divide the Order and the Core if not addressed immediately.

Recommendations
  • Increased patrols within the Omega-55 system and return Battleship Mars to Dagger Outpost
  • Upgrade of defence grid, communication array, close anti-fighter weapons and radar
  • Establishment of a rapid response unit to be deployed in similar circumstances
  • Improvement of Command-Fleet communication lines
  • Expanding Dagger’s on-board resource stores and service capabilities
  • Hardening of supply lines in the event of a siege
