Gentlemen,

I am not sure what the exact protocols for these kind of requests are, so I'll be blunt. Over the course of the past years we've frequently become engaged in small-scale skirmishes between our combined forces, and the Maltese threat. Not to mention some smaller pirate groups. These engagements have not always been in favor of our forces. After analyzing combat data from several such engagements, both successful and failed, I have to conclude that several of our pilots favor short-range engagements in fighter craft.
The Vampire class tachyon cannons do not excel in this role. Their design is largely for energy efficiency, allowing a large number of them to burst-fire on a hardened target, at medium range. Our fighters could benefit from a shorter range, higher projectile speed weapon. I have had a small research team dig through our archives to see if there were any technologies already available to us that could be adapted to this purpose, and there is one promising candidate.

The DRL/45H "Rock Hammer" railgun, is an old payload delivery system to launch shockwave charges into larger asteroids to break them up. The technology and principles behind this system predates our departure from Sol, however, the old design was unwieldy (requiring a transport class power core and mount along the length of the ship). Once the first homing mine charges were designed, this system became obsolete.
The principle behind the system is to expel a payload down a superconductor rail pair, using the resulting magnetic field to propel the charge to immense speeds. The bulk of the weapon's energy usage is not expended in propelling the charge, but in the coolant system. The rails are overcharged in respect to normal superconductors, and need to cool briefly after each cycle due to the plasma passing in proximity - thermal bleed is inevitable. In the past this led to heavy wear on the rail surface from the thermal spikes and sags, but modern superconductors available on the commercial market (courtesy of Ageira) have long since remedied this problem with the addition of a self-regenerative ablative shell (for industrial purposes and reduced maintenance requirements).

Early projections indicate that this system could be scaled down from the unwieldy specialized transport version to a diminished version that could be fitted inside a fighter turret. The resulting weapon would have a significantly shorter range in comparison to the Vampire, require more energy, and it's fire rate would be lower as well. However, the projectile (or possibly pure plasma bolt) would likely exceed the Vampire velocity, and do significantly more damage on impact, making a successful conclusion of this project, a capable short range fighter weapon, mainly suited for dogfights.

However, this will require significant research into fields we miners are not proficient in, mainly cryogenics and small-scale superconductor engineering. We also do not have facilities suitable for this kind of work - Aland is the only base with appropriate facilities, but I'd rather not have Rheinland and Bretonian scanners picking up on weapons research, as that could create a diplomatic stink I'd rather avoid. So my request is this: We are well aware of your significant industrial capacities, and I have no doubt there would be facilities within Tau 44 that could safely accomodate this research. Is there a chance that we could conduct this research in a joint project, and reap the benefits together?

Good day Miner,
My name is Alicia Young,
I have been picked to deal with your request.

A New weapon is a great thing, one that would benefit both, our Republic as well as the Guild. I will grant you access to Sarawak and Sulawesi, to work on this weapon together with one of our most promising scientists, he will contact you using this channel soon enough.
I hope you understand that the existence of the Sarawak research facility as well as the research into this subject has to be kept secret at all costs.

As I already mentioned, our scientist will contact you.

Greetings, Mr. Sanders.

The name is Duncan Chevalier, or you can call me Duncan, or Dr. Chevalier... it's up to you. I have been directed here by Miss Young.
I'll be your partner in this project. I think, miss Young already told, that this project has to be kept in secret, thats mean, that you can't reveal my identity to anyone else, all names of scientists team I'll provide will be kept in secret too.
As far as I understand, you have plans about creating some kind of new weapon... well... transmission was way too long and too boring... Is there are any chances of getting full information about that DRL/45H "Rock Hammer" railgun. And what help do you expecting for?

Chevalier out.

Greetings, Dr. Chevalier

I fully understand the need for secrecy in these matters. It is for that reason I did not want to perform this kind of research on Aland - too much traffic passing there, too many unwanted eyes and scanners. You have my word that all information shared will be treated as highly confidential. Within the Guild, only the directors, myself, and the team assigned to this project (consisting of, at current, five) are aware of this, and I intend to keep it this way. The fewer folk who know, the better.

As to your questions. I'll include the schematics to the DRL/45H along with this transmission, in a seperate data packet. I thought you would already have had access to these, it is a now obsolete civilian mining system. The assistance I am asking for is mainly a secure place to conduct the attempt to scale down this technology into a feasable fighter-class weapon series. Any expertise you already posess in the areas of small-scale superconductor utilization, and cryogenics would likely greatly speed up this project. It is more efficient to use existing knowledge then to restart from scratch. I will defer to your knowledge about your own facilities and personnel to select the best place to start, and whom from the Colonial side should be brought on the team.
The main problems that need to be solved are:
- Scaling down the components, which means the superconductor rails themselves, the cooling system, the capacitors, and the projectile buffers. The latter could probably be scavenged from the ECO or Purple Godess chainguns. The cooling systems and miniaturized launcher could be problematic.
- Finding a way to efficiently convert energy from the fighter's power core into a form usable by the system. The rails are electrically driven, but most drive systems these days use raw plasma as an energy source. Conversion systems are available, but they can't handle the sheer currents required.
- Solving the recoil, and lateral stress during continuous re-firing.
- Improving the rate of fire of the legacy system. One shot every hour won't quite suffice.

These are serious challenges, and at this point I am not certain if all of them can be overcome. But I am certain enough to wish to make the attempt to.

Mr. Sanders,

From now on, this channel will be for our project-related conversations. Soon, assistant from Colonial Republic will join us. Honestly, I have no ideas about his, or her experience, but I hope she or he will help us as much as possible.

I think, information about channel have to be changed now, and encryption set to maximum.

Waiting for respond of assistant.

Chevalier out.

A young man invades Duncan's office, without knocking of course. Holding some kind of device and begins shouting.

"Yo boss, 'ey boss. Old boss told me that you are my new boss...
Said som'thing like you need help whi'ta little project."

Guy slams a clearly unfinished device on Duncan's table and ataches a new set of wires and components.

"This will be a breaktrough, i tell you! Whatcha think, whatcha think? Hey, who are you talking to?"

He moves his eye as close to camera lens as possible.

"Heloooo~
I am Huey. They call me Huey... If you have problem call Huey"

Turns back at Chevalier.

"So boss, i just wanted to tell ya that you are my new boss. Yeah and... I am Huey. If ya looking for me i will be in tha' lab."

Huey takes the thingy with him and slams the door behind.

Colleagues,

Now... then we all know who we are, its time to start our work. Mr. Sanders, please, transport your science team to Sarawak station, sector B7, lab 12. There we'll have all equipment which will be needed for our further research works.

Fighters power core... I already experienced this problem with my previous research, its objective was just like this one- creating a new weapon. I had to sacrifice Nyx's self-defense compatibility, millions of credits, thousands of chips to make it work almost as I expected, anyway, I'm sure we'll found way, how to expand power core's limits.

Talking about various materials, just like superconductors, I'm sure we'll be able to make contract with ISE to get these for us.

And... Huey. Welcome aboard.

Chevalier out.

Greetings, Dr. Chevalier, mr. Huey.

I will send our team over as soon as possible. They are gathering what data they have collected so far. It isn't much I am told. You can expect them to arrive at Sarawak within the next 12 hours. I'll also send an extra cargo of copper towards Minato - I suspect our testing will require a lot of that material.
Here's a manifest of the research team. You'll find visual identification and genetic fingerprints included in the data packet.

* Jaqueline Frost - Information/data specialist. She was the one to discover the legacy system and suggest to continue to develop on it's principles.
* Dennis McFarley - Engineer / Engine specialist. Recruited onto the project to study the power conversion options from standard drive systems. Has not been able to contribute much thus far, other then a few general suggestions to oversize the commercially available systems.
* Stan Fujira - Engineer / Structural integrity specialist. Recruited onto the project to study ways to handle the recoil of this system. Has proposed several options, but thus far, unable to test any of them due to lack of prototypes.
* Irma Stein - Engineer / Demolitions expert. Initially drafted in to study the projectile retention system and projectile shape. Has been very productive thus far, but without a launcher prototype, has only been able to build a few mock-ups.
* Kyle Brennings - Engineer / Long-range telecommunications expert. Drafted into the project for his knowledge of superconductor applications in high-power telecommunications, which is basically the closest field we have to superconductor engineering. He's highly motivated, yet not an expert in the required field. But the best we got in that field.

In the mean time, I suggest we set up a full-scale version of the legacy system, using modernized parts, to see what figures and statistics of the legacy system need adjustment. I strongly recommend using some kind of cargo bay that opens directly into space, so that any test-firing does not damage the station - either that or we modify a standard heavy miner to mount it. The Hegemon's design descended from the vessel that used to mount the DRL/45, so the basic mounting method should still work.

I look forward meeting face to face, see you soon, mr Chevalier.
