Oh my god, I never thought I'd be able to say that again.
Hello everyone! Very happy to meet you all. Call me Risen, or Matt, we can get personal if you like because I plan on being here a VERY long time. Some might have seen me in the SGJ podcast today, if you did, why hello there.
I've been a fan of Freelancer since launch, way back when Lancers Reactor was alive and kicking, pre-Starport days. I've also modded a bit in the past, few systems, flyable ships, designation changes and the like. Managed to get one mentioned in RPGDot when it was alive, the whole journey was great fun as a high schooler. I was shattered when I watched FL slowly die and now, it seems I've finally found a community alive and well.
Many years later my passion for it hasn't waned, it's still my go-to sci-fi experience for a fun time.
Funnily enough, back when my internet was shoddy (okay, it's still not that great because I live in Australia, but yeah...) I played in single player. I hope now to have a bit more luck in joining everyone online. Failing that I'll at least be living here, as I'm big on community involvement, love to write novels, develop apps and basically be social online.
I look forward to meeting a lot of you online or here!
An FL community with posts a few minutes apart. I feel like crying tears of happiness .
How I found this community? Honestly, I'd forgotten all about Discovery but recalled a mod I played where I had more systems, NPCs used bats and bots, flew more tactically, had armour modules, and there was more progression I found. I asked someone in the podcast (about to mention it) I was in, and they told me it was indeed Discovery Freelancer. I jumped on a Discovery Freelancer feature on the Space Game Junkie podcast earlier today, and it rekindled my interest and longing to play some Freelancer again.
That's interesting, because we're currently having a migration wave to Discovery, which is always nice. Yesterday, I think at least four new people said hello. Maybe we can reach the daily 100 players at prime-time again, if that continues.
With around fifty to a hundred players online at any one time (and the server count seems to be on a climb of late), there's always plenty to do in our universe. We are a roleplay heavy community with great moderation and a keen sense of community spirit. Players shape the storyline and mod itself through a myriad of ways, and the mod directly continues the narrative of the Nomad War as defined by the vanilla storyline.
Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since the nomad war, and Sirius has become a more violent and more desolate place. The nomads have returned in force - those that remained trapped in Sirius after the activation of the Hypergate becoming the K'hara, whilst those that were drawn through the hypergate re-emerging as the Vagrants. Various Nomad-worshipping cult factions exist, whilst the Hispanic factions have furthered their agenda throughout the Sirian houses.
Most originally, the French colony ship, the Gallia, originally thought to have been destroyed by the Coalition in Sol, succeeded in arriving in a resource rich area of space near the Sirius sector beyond the Tau Barrier, known as the Gallic sector or gallic worlds. The citizens of Gallia, or Gauls, have developed themselves independently of the Sirian houses for hundreds of years, without competition from outside groups.
Rheinland and Liberty had re-entered a state of war following a Libertonian attempt to seize classified post-nomad war materials intelligence stored on Munster Research Station in the Bremen system, which escalated into total conflict. The war simmered down with time - but not before the destruction of the gate connection in the Bering system between Rheinland and Liberty. The two sides are now at piece, however Rheinland itself is under threat by a trans-sirian Socialist revolution lead by the Sirius Coalition, the Red Hessians, and the Mollys.
The Order has returned to a state of terrorism, and Toledo has been destroyed by the Nomads. The Order has nevertheless gone from strength to strength and is struggling to keep nomad incursion levels down within the houses. There remain rumours that the liberty navy, along with Rheinland intelligence services, contain infected individuals, although nothing is proven.
Bretonia is in a state of total war with Gallia, bravely attempting to defend their territories from the onslaught of the Gallic war machine. Leeds is under occupation as a Gallic principality. Meanwhile, the Gauls themselves are grappling with pro-democratic elements attempting to take down the Gallic Roi from the inside.
Kusari, invaded by Gallia, had its goverment forcibly replaced by a republic, driving Emperor Jien Kogen into exile. Jien Kogen's cousin is attempting to retake the throne of Kusari using the remnants of the Kusari fleet that fought the Gauls as a battering ram, and has occupied the Kyushu system.
The entire Tau worlds are now a gigantic, Sirius-long warzone between immigrants from the Crayter sector (another set of colonies settled by post-Earth man), Bretonia, Pro-Imperial Kusarians, Pro-Bretonian Outcasts, Liberty, and the Gallic Royal Navy.
Meanwhile, the Corsairs are grappling to preserve an artifact trade under threat, whilst in turn threatening the Zoner worlds within the Omega systems. A resurgent GMG is being eyeballed once again by conservative elements within Rheinland who seek to purge Libertonian influence from the economy. Bretonia is bravely holding the line against numerically superior odds, with private backing from across the sirius sector.
Fighters have been completely rebalanced - levels no longer matter, equipment matters along with individual skill. You can fly any ship from the smallest of shuttles to the largest of super carriers. Note, size does not equal win. Battleships are useless in asteroid fields, and a few bombers will down the largest juggernaught. Dedicated mining ships can mine for transports - but are vulnerable to piracy and need protection during extraction. Massive Player Verses NPC events provide the option for rare equipment, ships, credits, and visual effects. The trade economy is more dynamic using rolling trade events catalysed by admins and the decisions of player factions. There are "Official Factions" who set the lore and direction of each group in the game, and each house is extremely distinct in flavour and direction.
Discovery is as close as it gets to a visualisation of what Freelancer was originally made to be.
Beyond the edge of Sirius exists the unknown worlds of the Cassiopeia sector, whilst the Omicrons are fully explorable and incredibly dangerous (but contain lucrative secrets for those who know where to look and have the organisation to extract them).
If you need a good way to start, log ingame, get a mining ship and a miner ID, mount mining turrets, and mine Helium in the Pennsylvania system. If you're feeling more chancy, try mining Niobium with the Independent Miners Guild in Tau 23 (although watch for Outcasts), or Aluminum Ore in Munich (Watch for Unioners). It's our equivalent of the low level areas in Eve.
Would be nice . I think even an in-game community of 50 would be amazing to see again, quite honestly. Looking forward to having it installed and running sometime soon.
As for my name on Lancers Reactor, I wasn't very big... my name was Anarchael. If you do find some posts from me back then please remember I was in high school back in '05, don't judge me too harshly for grammar, haha. Made a mod called 'Beginner and Expert Systems' which was the RPGDot feature and that was probably my most played, nothing too special but zoned for some good combat. I had some chats with FlyByU and... forget his name now, but creator of the FuBi Open SP mod, over the years but nothing for a long while... OH, and Chips on occasion. I feel bad for not remembering some of the others but I guess a decade will do that.
@"Tænì" Thanks for the intro! Good to see how things have changed. Will look into mining, I did the same in Eve, but will probably also look into missions or low-level hauling as well. I'm all about the journey, .

Thanks for the nice rundown :3 and hello from me as well, Tanith described the situation pretty well, it is always good to know what is up to date, we should have a section where it is described in detail even, to look up any lore background, would be nice. Have fun on disco!
@Shelco Cheers for the welcome! Just waiting for my launcher to finish downloading all the really small patches that seem to be in abundance so I can play a bit before nodding off for the night (almost 9pm here, yay for time-zone differences).
