So we tried playing vanilla freelancer, he said that he doesn't like it because of its very old looks. So we are about to try Discovery today.
The problem is that he hasn't played freelancer singleplayer, so he doesn't know the story, factions, houses, etc. And that means he won't be able to RP properly.
(obviously, i'm trying to explain him the story in a nutshell, but it's still too hard to understand)
What could be better to RP than a guy that starts from zero? If you teach him how to properly RP, he'll be able to interact with friend and foe on a freelancer ID character to get them to introduce themselves to him. It's ideal, actually, as currently most people play their characters as all-knowing in terms of factions.

hm, i never thought of it that way. You know, this *could* work. thanks
Make him choose one faction, learn something about it on wiki, just enough he can RP, then create a character. Everything else will come with time, and it's best to learn online. I never played vanilla either, and well, here I am.
His loss if he does not know what's going on without playing vanilla. Just start him off fresh with a freelancer id for him to get used to everything and all, and you could work with him in erie.
(if you like, i could form some kind of mock-roleplay by seemingly come to you and work my way around if i can, to whatever he could throw at me)
Easy.
Link him to a no-comment letsplay of Freelancer. Preferably just the cinematics.
That should be enough of a starting point. The rest they can learn over time by reading the flavor text.
That or tell him to never leave Conn. Same thing.

PSA: If you have been having stutter/FPS lag on Disco where it does not run as smoothly as other games, please look at the fix here: https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...pid2306502

But to be honest, if he has an issue with how outdated Freelancer looks like, he won't be more happy with Discovery. Stations and some ships still look like papercut because of the shader the game uses, as well as the 90° sharp edges some models still have, like Newark for example.
