Other server information

Igiss and I had a vision of enabling other servers to have their factions and characters on this wiki. While this wiki IS primarily for GC, we are all Discovery players. There are two types of information on this wiki:

  • General Discovery information (NPC factions, ships, locations, sale points, systems and things that can be generated or found out from the ini files)
  • Specific server information (e.g. player characters and player factions)

Until now I have denied other servers getting their own faction or character pages, since it is a logistical nightmare to be able to support all the servers that are using Discovery, on this wiki.

In talking to some of the other server admins, I believe we have found a way forward with allowing other servers information on here. To this end I created Template:Test Faction Infobox. This is a template that allows a server variable, and image switching based on the server. Once it is perfected, it might be possible to be used. Please only edit it, if you know what you are doing. RESEARCH what it is doing before changing things. It'll need finishing before other servers can use it, however it is a way forward. Things to take into consideration when dealing with this issue:

  • It must be clear on teh article itself, to which server this player charater or faction belongs.
  • The category must be reflect to which server this player charater or faction belongs.
  • It also has to take into account if the faction is NPC, Official, or an unofficial Group.
  • It is not yet ready. Someone will have to make it ready since I am no longer working on this wiki. ~Chovynz~ (BlabsEgo) (Wiki Admin) 19:04, 25 October 2009 (MDT)
  • it is each servers responsibility to keep their stuff updated. Take too long to update and it'll either be placed with out dated or become useless. There's nothing worse than a useless wiki, so, keep on the ball with this one.

Below are some discussion with forward thinking, or plans for future highlighted in green.

  • [20/10/2009 1:48:26 p.m.] Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Both Igiss and I want to make the GC wiki a place where all servers that run the Disco mod a place where they can use it.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Up until recently, I have not moved in that direction because of teh overwhelming amount of general Disco info that needs to be put up.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: And the shear lack of volunteers, or capable people.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So my question is this.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: The wiki is a good place to find info correct?
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Yeah, definitely.
  • Akura says: Yeah,
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: searchable, linkable, etcetc
  • Akura says: Yeah it is
  • Akura says: Just needs time to be tweaked, as long as they stop throwing updates about...
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: There is general info, like a System page. This is something that everyone can use, and it's useful to all users... no matter the server.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Most of the info on commodites, ships, IDs and equipment is great for all servers too.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Then there is Server specific info, like Player factions and characters. And this is where the problems arise.
  • Akura says: Yeah...
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: If for example, we link from the LPI NPC faction to the GC server player faction, what do we do with the FLUK or Berlin faction?
  • Akura says: Have LPI (UK) and LPI (GC)?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: We need a way of quickly and easily identifying which belongs to where
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: That's only part of the issue Akura.
  • Akura says: Good point...
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: How do we categorise them? what links where? whos maintaining all this?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I have no prob doing GC as that is where I play mostly.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: But to be effective, I need people.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: I'm not sure how difficult it would be to do as I haven't seen the wiki script, but we might be able to make the categories more specific, so that they define a server (or its identifier).
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: (And before you volunteer for something remember that I've been working on this wiki for a year now)
  • Akura says: And the stress that comes with...
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Making the wiki code is easy. It's basically just data entry
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: being a good researcher helps.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: No, I meant editing its source code to enable an identifier in the URL.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Without having to have a whole new wiki per server.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Oh, no need to do that. we'll just lump them all into the wiki
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Yeah.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: No point making another wiki for only factions.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: what makes this a touchy and potentially difficult issue is the amount of people that are willing to input into the wiki. Alex is one of the first that I know of from FLUK that has helped with the wiki. How many more people are like him?
  • Akura says: Me and him so far, we can advertise it on the forums
  • Akura says: Grim might be interested
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I know Grim.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Where you currently have "index.php?title=Corsairs" I imagine it could be extended to read "index.php?svr=GC&title=Corsairs".
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Where svr identifies the server.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: That's not something that I can do, and you'll have to talk to Igiss about it, (or give me specifics). Plus it also sounds... too technical for teh average reader. One of the solutions that I thought of, and why I was prompted to ask here http://www.discoveryfluk.com/index.php?topic=1026.0 was to have a Server banner, on teh page, or in teh Player faction infobox/character infobox.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I was going to take the Forum Header, but since you CAN change the forum styles now, using the default one might not be appropriate.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So, what I need from you guys, is a banner for FLUK to be used on the GC wiki
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: What's the font that FLUK's header is in?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Alba?. Nope not alba
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Font?
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Teacher-A.
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: http://www.dafont.com/teacher.font
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Want to see a visual of what im thinking?
  • Akura says: Hmmm
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Sure, post it in.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'll take me 5 to whip up
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I want to identify as many problems before we even go down this path as possible
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Yes, I would imagine we could do that.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I need one faction to test this on.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: And one character
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'd also appreciate it if you kept this quiet for now.
  • Akura says: Mkay...
  • Discovery UK (Josh) says: Ok, not a problem.
  • Akura says: I like it
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I am... wary of people going "OMG YUS!" then rushing in and I have a big mess to clean up in 3 weeks.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So what are the issues you guys identify?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'm thinking one for teh chars too
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: so it'll be like DUK - Faction, DUK Character
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I think a disambiguation page would certainly help.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=User_talk:Chovynz/Sandbox
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: this is what i have so far
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: need to tweak it lots
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'd be making the template that can handle the server
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: automatic. not manual
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: just making teh finished product then working backwards.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So... the template needs |server =
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: maybe even |official=
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: if yes then put that official at top, if not then put player group at top
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: It needs DiscoUK Faction Category
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: again the Template can take care of that
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: based on |server=
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Not sure about "canon" it's ... mmm...when we are dealing with lots of servers, there is no more "canon"
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: And dave sounded like an ewok then
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: You going to bed? is there anything else that can be automaticsised with lots of servers?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: updated
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=User_talk:Chovynz/Sandbox
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Updated again
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Check down the bottom
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: there's nothing. This is the only category
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: only page with that cat
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Big Fugly wall of text there
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Not sure I like that UK faction banner but it don't really see what else I can do.

  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Updated again
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Anything else this needs?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: To not be confused with DiscoGC?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: mmm
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: not happy with that solution
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Does it need the DiscoUK banner in the infobox as well?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Pretend the NO - Discovery UK is teh page title
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So are you guys happy with this sort of thing?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: And then on the outcasts NPC page we'd have a link to a disambig page that lists all outcasts factions
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: maybe a table for each server
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: oh dear god.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Server_List
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: sigh
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'm just looking at the amount of work to do, once opening this door.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Automatic is easy enough to do. when i started i didn't know wiki
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Nobody else would step up to getting teh wiki updated though so, i did. Now im the wiki. :)
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Are you (as FLUK admins) happy with that banner?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: yus
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: ok. Just replace that banner.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Try to keep it the same size please
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Or something
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: size = width 500
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: height can be within 200
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: 200 is quite big though.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I would have liked to go smaller, to be not ugly, but it didnt fit
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Make it clear that it is FLUK though
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Player_Factions

  • * * Union of Gold
  • * * User talk:Chovynz/Sandbox
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: My User sandbox It's appearing there because of the infobox used...
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Official, is going to have to change to something
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: DiscoGC Faction?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: ugh. Need to write out a mindmap of what this is going to effect
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Golden_Chrysanthemums_(player_faction)
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: This is DiscoGC Official
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: the page name might need to change....
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: <headdesk>
  • Akura says: http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Golden_Chrysanthemums_(player_faction_uk)
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: So, Do you guys have an official GC faction?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Do you guys structure your factions like this?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: e.g LPI NPC faction, LPI Player faction?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: or do you have custom names for yours?
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: hmm
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I think for now, I'll stay with the NO
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Golden Chrysanthemums (player faction uk) I think this is a good solution
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Golden Chrysanthemums (player faction gc)
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: Golden Chrysanthemums (player faction berlin)
  • But only after this process is sorted out. I'd hate to have someone start doing this then teh process changes.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: I'm going to need to liase with teh other GC wiki editors and admins to determine the way forward on these server stuff.
  • Nathaniel (Hyung Soong) says: But at least we've made a start

Max Shield Level

ATM it says which is the highest level of shield the ship can handle, the thing is that some ships, like the Barghest, can mount a lvl 10 HF shield but also a lvl 6 FR shield which is better. I think we should write the most powerful shield class the ship can mount like: 6 FR for the Barghest or 10 HF for most VHF. "Skatepro0 17:24, 23 July 2009 (MDT)"

I think it would be best to include both, using either has advantages and disadvantages so both seems like a better choice. Change Weapon hardpoints to equipment hardpoints and stick the info in there, that seems best. --Tazuras 17:53, 23 July 2009 (MDT)
All ships updated as of V4850 include which shields can be mounted in the hardpoint section if it is possible to mount more than the one expected type. -cshake (feedback-contribs) 19:17, 25 October 2009 (MDT)

Old Earth History

Everyone knows pretty much the game storyline, but how many players know the facts of the Old World as we really know it?

It was suggested I add some of my research into the various factions, locations and events in real time as the original storyline on Microsoft's website states that the history, customs etc are distorted.

Here are some examples and the connection to some of the rumors from the Vanilla Freelancer version:

The Sakura Festival, as mentioned by the Blood Dragons is in reality known as the Dark (Cherry) Blossom Festival, of which Kyoto is a shrine.
Tokyo was initially constructed in 1457; the city was known as Edo (江戸). The Tokugawa shogunate was established in 1603 with Edo as its seat of government (de facto capital). (The emperor's residence, and formal capital, remained in Kyoto 。ェ that city had been the actual capital of Japan until that time.) In September of 1868, when the shogunate came to an end, Emperor Meiji ordered Edo to be renamed "Tokyo," meaning "Eastern Capital." The new name was meant to emphasize Tokyo's status as the new capital of Japan, both temporally and spiritually.

This is just one of many references that may interest some of our younger members

Wanted pages

Anyone with spare time please look at Special:Wantedpages and create those. The higher up they are, the more urgent it can be considered.

Please also look at the 'what links here' link on the left when creating a page, to find out what is expected to be on the page.

Editor's Compendium

This page will link to many various tools that are useful for any editor. Please familiarise yourself with them.

Selling Locations

We now have a spoiler tags/template. These will hide information straight off when you enter a page. We can now put the complete selling information points into bases, ships and etc. If people want to spoil the "Discovery" experience for themselves they can and will find a way, if not with the Disco Wiki, then with many of the other tools that are available.

Adding in this "spoiled" information (selling places) is currently not cleared with Igiss, however, using these spoiler tags will allow the wiki to be useful to everyone, in accordance with the intention of Wiki's, and with one of the original statements on the main page. "Our goal is to create a site with all the resources to guide both experienced players and new players to the enjoyable world of the Discovery Mod."

Because Igiss is a busy man, I've not consulted him on these, and I will take responsibility for this decision, so if he questions you about these, either point him towards me, or here. I'll be attempting to contact him at some point to go over this.
Update: This solution is acceptable to Igiss. I contacted him on the Discovery Developers Forums.
~Chovynz~ (BlabsEgo) 17:10, 16 July 2009 (MDT)

Throughout the Wiki editing and Discovery playing, I and a number of other people, have come across certain situations where having these "spoiler" information available on the wiki would have been a great benefit to the Roleplay of that player. Having spoiler information on this wiki is actually a good thing.

  • It allows people who are part of a faction, to know information that they would already know in RP.
  • It allows for easy searching and finding of the ID's and ships that are needed to start/continue the chosen RP.
  • It makes this wiki more useful to veteran players, as there is a limit to how many times you can get enjoyment out of "discovering" the same amount of space.
  • It makes this wiki more useful to those who are not part of the Discovery 24/7 RP server.
  • It will avoid situations like these.
  • It consolidates the information regarding Discovery mod into one place.

coordinates of bases

This is a tricky subject. I think for lawful bases the co-ordinates are fine. And wellknown bases (both lawful and unlawful) as well. The contention comes about when we are talking about "secret" bases or "new" bases, such as ones in Gallia. I would expect that the co-ordinates ARE available from information kiosks and brokers around Sirius, so to say "No displaying coordinates", doesn't make logical sense to me. Chovynz 18:24, 18 June 2009 (MDT)

I actually feel it makes sense. There are information brokers in the game engine that will reveal the coordinates to bases for a price. If they do not exist then it doesnt seem like the developers want this information to be so easily obtained (or they havent had time to make them yet, but i dont think the wiki should act as compensation for lack of development resources. -Tazuras 17:26, 22 June 2009 (MDT)

I'll just decide on this. Include co-ordinates, including pirate bases. They are the same kind of information as Selling locations. It doesn't make sense to exclude them on the following grounds:

  • lack of development (or interest thereof - the information broker suggestion was suggested a very long time ago.)
  • In-RP a pirate who had grown up in those factions would know of those places.
  • Having them extends the wiki's useful-ness for every user of Discovery mod, not just Disco 24/7 RP server.
  • People will use other tools to find the info, if it is not here. Might as well consolidate all information tools into one place.
  • Having them on this wiki doesn't change the amount of "lolwats" in play. It only changes the tool they use. "Lolwat" reduction is a matter of education/discipline/punishment rather than information control.
    ~Chovynz~ (BlabsEgo) 21:57, 12 July 2009 (MDT)

Update: See above : Discovery Wiki:General Discussion#Selling Locations. The two information types are too similar to worry about excluding co-ordinates. Again, if somebody wants to spoil it they will find a way. It makes sense to just include them on the Disco wiki.

Weapons/Turrets Sorting

I've just filled in all the content on the missiles page, but have inadvertantly unearthed another issue. Re: Missile Turrets, I propose these turrets list as part of the "Class X Turrets" pages (which I am workin on collecting data to fill in - any help there would be appreciated). They sort better based on class - i.e. ship type - than the fact that these turrets fire missiles. Especially when you've got to factor in other turret types (Flak, Razor, etc.) If people are interested we could still have a Missile Turrets links page with sortable table (sort of a double-up), but I would just do a simple disambig page linking to the different classes. What are people's feelings on this and the current organization of the weapons listings? JRawk 23:45, 21 December 2008 (MST)

Missile turrets have been merged "Skatepro0 21:02, 8 July 2009 (MDT)"
