This is a transport class ship and uses only transport shields and turrets, however, 1 of its 5 turrets is a gunboat turret. All 5 turrets fire forward, and in fact, the gunboat turret only fires forward. It's mounted between two raised ridges at the very bow of the ship, which gives it only a roughly 45 degree angle of movement; it basically only covers 2/3 of the screen when looking directly ahead, in standard view. The remaining transport class turrets are mounted 2-up and 2-down on the mid-section platforms that covers the ship like a ring/belt, so all 4 can fire rearward. Unfortunately, this layout gives the ship serious blind-spot issues, as you can only fire 2 turrets up, 2 turrets down, and 2 turrets to either side. To make up for this, I use the Cerberus Gunboat Turret to allow for maximum damage when firing forward.

When men and philosophers first dreamed, they dreamed of the stars. To visit their gods residing with the heavenly kingdoms they had fashioned from their imaginations. Once that had been taken care of, they needed something of equal grandeur upon which to focus their fevered imaginations. Now when men dream, they dream of the Democritus, of pools laid beneath the stars, of bar service, of Zeus's chariot with their name on the deed, of Aphrodite admiring the trim, while Eris charts the party's course.

The final culmination of personal glory and accumulated wealth, the Democritus ferries her charges with agility, security and unmatched grace. With dual countermeasures, a slim profile and enough firepower to knock a small moon out of orbit, as once demonstrated against a hapless Maine by one furiously intoxicated Jay Simon of Interspace Commerce, there is no greater combination of style and security within the colonies of man.

Review (4.88)

The "Democritus" is a very interesting ship. As far as liners go, it's a good value for the credits. It's cargo capacity has been increased to 2,700 from the original 1,500 in version 4.87, which allows you to carry considerably more passengers or cargo than before, almost doubling your potential profit margin from the previous version. Visually, it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye, or at least it is to mine. It has a distinct boat-esque shape that, combined with the two separate engine ports at the rear, and the saucer shaped pilot house at the peak, make it easy to recognize from a distance.

It has a hull strength of 120,000 (which increases to 300,000 with a MK VIII armor upgrade), and 400/400 nanobots and shield batteries. It mounts transport shields, so I use the heaviest possible transport shield which has 100,000 shield strength, at the expense of a slower regeneration rate. In fact, the one saving grace to this ship, aside from its stunning good looks (personal opinion), is that is has 2, yes, TWO CM slots. This allows you to either A) drop two CM flares at a time by pressing a hotkey, almost guaranteeing that you can't be hit by cruise disruptor missiles from behind, or B) having a transport class Cloaking Device mounted, and still have CM flares, just in case. Granted, the cloaking device will take up some room, as will the batteries (at 2 cargo units of space per battery). Regardless, this makes the Democritus liner a great ship for heavy RPers. Aside from Role-Play though, there are much better ships out there.
