The colonists however would pay a terrible price. Most of the cities had sprung up around major coastal regions, where the land was flat and fertile. As the warming trend continued, oceanic levels rose by a full 35 meters, and three of the "Megacities" as they were known, were completely submerged when their sea defenses collapsed. Thousands of colonists lost their lives, and millions were left homeless. While most colonists eventually rebuilt further inland, a number of settlers left for other, more stable living space, such as Planet Marne.

Amiens was the third planet colonized in Gallia after New Paris and Orleans. This is one of the reasons why Picardy, despite being located near the edge of Gallic space, is considered part of the Core Worlds. After colonization, the system was surveyed more extensively, but very few jumpholes were found leading out of the system, with the exception of the path to Maine. Gallic space exploration instead turned to the south.

Amiens was discovered in 48 A.G.S., a year after the jumphole to Picardy was found. The planet proved less-then-optimal for human colonization due to the arctic climate dominating most of the surface, but exploration teams detected signs of rich mineral deposits on, and not far below the surface. It was not until 204 A.G.S. that the first mining colonies were established, followed in the next century by an extensive industrial and civilian influx. The civilian population clustered around the industry, which gave rise to a few massive cities which housed the bulk of the planet's population, all located in the equatorial region.

The planet climate began to change as a result of the unchecked industry. Pollutants in the atmosphere caused the planet to warm up by as much as three degrees in under a century. Rather then curbing this, Gallic leaders made the controversial decision to accellerate the process. It was hoped that if the planet warmed up sufficiently, a much larger portion of it's surface would be habitable. These efforts succeeded, and the average temperature was raised by a full 12 degrees by 400 A.G.S., and widened the equatorial "hot band" by several hundred kilometers.

Since then, the warming trend has continued, and ocean levels continue to rise as well. Cities on Amiens are required to be founded no less then 100 meters above the current sea level on the planet, and cities less then 20 meters above sea level are forbidden to expand further. Despite these restrictions, the Amiens population is growing steadily. The last census puts the population just below 750 million.
