The icy world of Mayenne was colonized in 452 AGS. The conditions on the planet were long considered too harsh for any mining operations, but research showed the presence of a number of rare ores in the planet's crust. Extensive mining started shortly before the First Gallic War broke out. The war put a halt to those operations, since Mayenne was constantly threatened by Normandy factions at war with the Royal government. With all Royal Navy forces pulled back to defend Le Mans, Mayenne was often left without any protection and mining settlements were bombarded from space a number of times in 505-507 AGS. The separatists even attempted two ill-fated planetary landings, attempting to capture the mining operations using ground troops. Mayenne's army detachments, despite being small in numbers, were much better prepared for fighting in the extremely cold environments than the separatists' forces. Normandy troops suffered heavy casualties, mostly caused by exposure to elements and lack of supplies, and were defeated.

After the war, the mining industry started to grow once again. The current population is nearing 130,000, but the proximity of the Normandy border results in over half of that number being either Gallic Army soldiers, officers, or base personnel. Further research showed that the planet was once in a much closer orbit to Maine's sun and had organic life on its surface. Below the ice layer of the crust, very large deposits of high-quality oil were found, much of it provided for export. The planet also produces Cryocubes in a specially designed manufacturing facility near the main space port.
