Planet Orleans was the second permanently inhabited world of Gallia after New Paris. With the Orleanais system conveniently linked to New Paris with a jump hole, the system was found by Gallic exploration vessels as early as 60 AGS, and the planet was discovered later the same year. After extensive research into the ecology and climate of the planet, the first settlements were established on Orleans in 134 AGS, and in less than 50 years its population grew to 200,000. Rapid population growth continued afterwards via a high birth rate, assisted by the influx of New Paris citizens, and, more lately, immigrants from other Gallic planets.

The planet is an ancient one compared to New Paris and even to Earth, having been formed more than 9 billion years ago. Primitive cellular life forms appeared on the planet over 2 billion years ago, and the process of evolution continues slowly until present day. Life forms present on Orleans currently include varied algae species, scarce land plants and microorganisms. However, the natural biosphere was severely compromised when varions species originating from Earth and New Paris were introduced to the planet by the colonists.

Currently, the planet is considered to be one of the most comfortable places to live in Gallia on par with New Paris and Lyon. Much like the capital planet, Orleans has varied regions with a diverse economy and vast population that nearly reached 2 billion by the year 730 AGS. With Lyon's population growth slowing down in the last hundred years, it is very likely that Orleans will continue to stay the second most populated planet in Gallia for long into the future. The majority of Orleans' population prefers living in city suburbs, which are generally much larger and better developed than in other Gallic worlds. Agriculture is also more productive than on other planets, with only Lyon capable of providing significant competition.
