BRETONIAN MERCHANT NAVY

The Merchant Navy has been in existence for a significant period in Bretonian history, owing much of its growth to Bretonian imperial expansion. As an entity in itself it can be dated back to the 17th century of ancient Sol history, where an attempt was made to register all seamen as a source of manpower for the so called Royal Navy during times of conflict. However that registration of merchant seamen failed, and it was not successfully implemented until 1835. Merchant mariners are held in high esteem as a result of their extraordinary losses in times of war. The ships were often "sitting ducks" lined up in the sights of enemy combatants...

With the beginning of exploring the whole Sol system, and new technolgies, like planetary repulsor lifts and anti gravitation engines, and the start of colonisation of Sol system, the role of the Merchant Navy grew again, as the Kingdom of Great Britain, Bretonia today, was a part of the western Alliance, the Alliance against the Communist threat that resulted of the Cold War in the late 20th century. As a part of Alliance space exploration, the Merchant Navy of Great Britain fully took part in every sort of logistical action that has been done in the days of exploration of the Sol system. Since the frictions between the Western Alliance of Europe and Americas and Eastern Coalition created from Tigris Confederation, Eastern Republic, East Asian Federation, and Russia started, the militarisation of both sides logically involved Merchant Navy of Great Britain and later Alliance Merchant Navy into the incoming conflict. Since year 2028 when Merchant Navy fleet, at that moment the greatest transport fleet ever, containing over 10'000 ships operating under the Alliance flag, took part in evacuation of the largest Earth megalopolises before the nuclear apocalypses began.
All over the time of the war, thousands of volunteers that joined the ranks of Merchant Navy sacrificed their lives in countless battles all over the Sol system. During the universal conscription and mobilisation of all transport ships for military necessity, united Alliance Merchant Navy under the control of Fleet, not politicians, continued to do its work even when the difficulties between the nations-members of the Alliance itself led to the dramatic consequences after year 2170.
The most dramatic episode in the history of Alliance Merchant Navy, that in fact put the end to it, took place between years 2199 and 2200 when, after the remains of Alliance fleet were destroyed in the Battle of Triton, more then 1'000 of the remaining Merchant Navy captains made up a giant shield, using their ships and their guns to protect the Sleeper Ships launching from the Pluto surface in the last hope to reach a distant space with the colonists on board. That day the history of Alliance Merchant Navy ended...

With the need of resources rising during the Gallic war, the Merchant Navy was reborn and constantly shipping parts for new ships like the 'Challenger' and the 'Templar'. The Merchant Navy also transported a vast majority of materials for 'Project Agincourt' along with the help of Bowex and Gateway, Bretonia's two biggest shipping corporations. Today the Merchant Navy is tasked to support Bretonia's effort to rebuild after the destruction the Gallic war left behind. They're raising funds by exporting some of Bretonia's most sought-after goods, like for example Gold ore, which the Merchant Navy hauling due to their close partnership with BMM. With those funds they travel through different houses and ship the Military- and Builder-Materials needed back home.

The Merchant Navy prouds itself by forming heavy convoys, mostly formed out of the well known Shire heavy transport, which have led many pirates to their demise. Lately the ranks have been filled with its Libertonian counterpart, the Bison. It's in their credo not to let their route be hindered by those who'd pray upon trade-vessels. Their transports alone pack a punch and most of them are well armored as well, however they do not travel alone. Sometimes their escort reach up to a squadron of fighters, led by a mghty Churchill class Gunboat. Certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Currently negotiations are underway, to allow the Merchant Navy transports and its escorts to enter the different houses and haul back the materials necessary for Bretonias rebuilding efforts. At the same time a recruitment offensive has been initiatet to attract those pilots who could not fight on the front lines for any reason but whish to contribute to Bretonias efforts, or those who have had enough of praying eyes and guns along their way to their destination.

THE TRANSPORT VESSELS

The 'Clydesdale'
Cargo Space - 550 units

The smallest transport to our disposal, the Clydesdale is used to deliver cargo to the most hostile places in Sirius. Mainly because of it's small size and good hull strength it makes a good vessel for dropping off supplies at Leeds.

The 'Percheron'
Cargo Space - 2500 units

The daddy of the Clydesdale, this is the standard transport vessel that can haul a good amount of cargo while having a good hull strength and good speed.

The 'Serenity'
Cargo Space - 3600

The newest addition to the Merchant Navy's fleet, the Serenity is a cheap to build, yet very efficient ship. It is hoped that these are to replace older vessels.

The 'Oasis'
Cargo Space - 3300

A smaller and more nimble version of the Enterprise liner, offering less comfort, and more suited to handling captured enemy combatants than troops, though that purpose is there. Extra combat capabilities with the addition of the Cruise Disrupter also makes it an effective anti-smuggling and anti blockade running support ship.

The 'Palace'
Cargo Space - 3500

The small yet fierce Bretonia cruise line is a fine ship, though it is considerably rare to see one, the majority of liners on the market are of Liberty design. A mid ground between the Oasis and the Enterprise, a patriotic choice but, it is an expensive ship with only minor advantages over the Oasis.

The 'Shukensha'
Cargo Space - 4000

The Renzu Liner, produced by the IC owned Renzu corp, is an extravaganve to say the least. Costing twice the amount a normal liner would, with not a huge difference, if it is found in Merchant Navy service it has likely been confiscated, donated or salvaged.

The 'Shire'
Cargo Space - 4200

The biggest transport we use, the 'Shire' is used for large convoys or deliveries with escorts. Due to it's size and speed (slow) it is easy to destroy or hunt down. Be sure to contact a BAF Squadron to escort you and your convoy if a dedicated Merchant Navy Fighter Squadron isn't able to fly. A Shire can be converted into a flying fortress with stronger armor and the right weaponry, any pirate is sure to be put on edge when faced with a convoy of these monsters.

The 'Enterprise'
Cargo Space - 4300

A special purpose Liner primarily for the transportation of troops from theatre to theatre, as well as refugees from warzones. The Enterprise offers the largest cargo hold and capacity compared to the smaller Oasis and rarer Palace design.

The 'Bison'
Cargo Space - 4300

A Liberty ship similiar to the Shire in nature. Faced with Transport shortages following losses in ship production, requests were made to Liberty corporations to supply a new transport. Bretonian crews inexperience with the ship however makes it perform slightly below optimum.
