Independent Miners Guild (IMG)

Message dump and Recruitment at IMG Guild Communications System (GuildComm)

Guild Profile

We are the IMG. We are free. And we shall go on being free.

We are the workers the miners, the traders, and the artisans who cultivate the resources of space that others have ignored, bringing them to producers throughout Sirius, and using them ourselves to create spacecraft and other technologies for human development. We are the guardians, the sentinels who stand between family and livelihood on the one side, and on the other, those who would threaten to take them from us. We are the explorers, who search into the vast unknown of space, and the pioneers, who see opportunity and potential where others do not, and cannot, for their own failure of imagination. We have defied the odds, and we continue to do so, leaving our allies confident and our enemies stupefied.

We are the Guild. We value work, and we work hard. We harvest, we refine, we create, and we share with others in return for the resources and the funds to care for and protect our ownand to keep going. And we do not harvest and refine and create mere things alone. No, we refine ourselves, and we refine each other. We pursue excellence in our chosen professions, because that is what it means to belong to a guild. That is what it is to be the Guild.

The Independent Miners Guild (IMG) began as a loose affiliation of independent miners seeking a new start after leaving the despicable and dehumanizing working conditions of megacorporations such as Bretonian Mining and Manufacturing (BMM). By our own grit and determination, we carved out a new life mining and shipping raw materials from the farthest reaches of the western Sirius Sector. Over time, our numbers grew as more and more disaffected workers and others such as Rheinlanders fleeing the depression joined our ranks. Due to the increase in numbers and various crises over time, the Guild consolidated into a tighter organization though still driven by our fierce independence and self-determination establishing installations throughout the Tau systems and building a considerable market for its goods.

In recent years, IMG has encountered a number of opportunities and challenges. We have entered into ship design and production, and are now counted among the most reputable shipwrights in the Sirius Sector. In addition, research into advanced technologies has yielded marked improvement in mining technique as well as vessel protection. Perhaps most importantly, IMG has proved a decisive alternative to the corrupt and abusive practices of BMM and other megacorporations, welcoming numerous struggling workers into its midst, and providing them the opportunities and resources to make a decent living.

In short, the permanent and ultimate objective of IMG is to strike and maintain the proper balance between the profitability and welfare of its members and their families. To this end, the Guild pledges itself to strong leadership matched by strong member representation to effectiveness and accountability alike. The members interests are the Guilds top priority, the objective it pursues day in and day out. While major crises as well as the basic needs of scratching out a living in Sirius have prompted a degree of centralization in the Guild, every member is assured of a voice, of the cultivation of his or her skills, of a commitment to his or her prosperity in all areas of human development. And every member is assured that our community will be safeguarded at all personal cost.

For we are the IMG. We are free. And we shall go on being free.

Operations and Organizational Structure

Rules of Operation

All Guild members are required to observed the following policies:

1. Abide by all Sirius (Discovery Server) rules and expectations. Depending on the circumstances, violations will result in faction discipline, up to and including expulsion.
2. Cultivate active lives (RP) with assistance, as needed, from Guild leadership. We are immersing ourselves into a story here, so thoughtful RP is essential.
3. Familiarize themselves with Guild policies and regularly read the message dump thread. Members are strongly encouraged to have Skype accounts as well.

Economic Division

Miners: IMG|Firstname.Surname[M]
Traders: IMG|Firstname.Surname[T]

Mining and trade form the backbone of IMG. Areas for productive mining as well as profitable trade routes are identified, analyzed and incorporated into existing operations. Miners and traders have a variety of locations and opportunities open to them, which they are encouraged to pursue with enthusiasm and diligence. Members of this division are designated at the apprentice, journeyman, and master levels of expertise, each level carrying with it particular responsibilities and privileges.

Apprentice
Miners/traders are designated apprentice-level upon first entering the Guild. Relatively new to their given profession, they are given training in a slightly more controlled environment than more experienced members. Assignments are potentially more structured, and the apprentice miner/trader must fulfill a given time commitment as well as meeting particular requirements before he/she can move up to the journeyman level.

Apprentice miners/traders have the following requirements:
1. Follow instructions of supervising members, including performance of work as assigned.
2. Follow IMG policies in all activities.
3. Pay regular dues to the Guild. Dues rates are subject to change.

Apprentice miners/traders have the following privileges:
1. Receive intermediate-level training in all aspects of mining/trading operations, with every opportunity to work toward journeyman-level status.
2. Receive protection as available during operations.
3. Contribute ideas or voice concerns and grievances to supervisor or division director.

Journeyman
Journeyman miners/traders are those who have fulfilled their apprenticeships successfully and continue to work in their chosen profession. As opposed to apprentices, journeymen have proved a particular level of competence and commitment to Guild principles such that they can work independently and without supervision.

Journeyman miners/traders have the following requirements:
1. Operate in a manner that reflects independent professional competency and that sets an example for members at lower levels.
2. Follow IMG policies in all activities.
3. Pay regular dues to the Guild. Dues rates are subject to change.

Journeyman miners/traders have the following privileges, beyond apprentice-level privileges:
1. Independence of work assignment and location.
2. Receive advanced training in all aspects of mining/trading operations.
3. Participate in confidence vote for division director at regular intervals.
4. Contribute ideas or voice concerns and grievances to supervisor or division director.

Master
Master miners/traders have fulfilled the responsibilities of the journeyman level with distinction, and have additionally undergone special evaluation that, if passed, marks them as having a superior level of experience and expertise in their chosen profession. This is the highest level of Guild membership any miner or trader can attain.

Master miners/traders have the following requirements:
1. Operate in a manner that displays the highest level of expertise in their chosen profession, and that sets a proper example for members at lower levels.
2. Follow IMG policies in all activities.
3. Pay regular dues to the Guild. Dues rates are subject to change.

Master miners/traders have the following privileges, beyond journeyman-level privileges:
1. Participate in confidence vote for Guild Master at regular intervals.
2. May apply for guild leadership position (directorship and above) in the event of vacancy.

Supervisor
As opposed to the preceding levels of expertise, Supervisor status designates command authority on the part of the holder. This position is optional depending on the current need and discretion of the director. One supervisor each for mining and trading, these individauls assist the director with all aspects of daily operations management, from recruiting and setup to work assignments and evaluations. Only master-level members may apply for a vacant supervisor slot.

Supervisors have the following requirements:
1. Obey the instructions of the Economic Director, DGM or GM.
2. Conduct mining and trade operations within Guild policy guidelines and diplomacy.

Supervisors have the following privileges:
1. May apply for Guild leadership position (directorship and up) upon vacancy.

Defense Division

IMG|Firstname.Surname[D]

IMG's Defense Division is the shield that allows the Guild's economic operations to work relatively unhindered. Pilots in this division are responsible for a number of regular tasks, including but not limited to escort services, patrols, pirate interdiction, and offensive strike force operations.

Cadet
Combat pilots are designated cadet-level upon first entering the Guild. Relatively new to their given profession, they are given training in a slightly more controlled environment than more experienced members. Assignments are potentially more structured, and the cadet must fulfill a given time commitment as well as meeting particular requirements before he/she can move up to the guardian level. Typical cadet duties range from trade escort and patrol to limited offensive engagement.

Cadet pilots have the following requirements:
1. Obey the instructions of higher-level pilots and commanders at all times, unless those instructions violate Guild law.
2. Perform their duties in such a way as to aim toward guardian status.

Cadet pilots have the following privileges:
1. Cadets may ask for escort/patrol fees in the third rate range.
2. Contribute ideas or voice concerns and grievances to supervisor or division director.

Guardian
Having proved competence in cadet-level training, guardian-level training adds anti-capital ship strafing and other offensive exercises. They have therefore been allowed to use a bomber for the defense of the Guild and it's assets, are allowed to undertake pirate interdiction, and are incorporated into strike force operations as necessary.

Guardian pilots have the following requirements:
1. Obey the instructions of higher-level pilots and commanders at all times, unless those instructions violate Guild law.
2. Set a proper example for cadet pilots in all aspects of Guild life.

Guardian pilots have the following privileges:
1. May pursue veteran status through exemplary service and passing evaluation.
2. My participate in confirmation votes on division director.
3. May ask for escort/patrol fees in the second rate range.
4. Contribute ideas or voice concerns and grievances to supervisor or division director.

Veteran
Veteran-level pilots are those who have served in an exemplary manner in all aspects of combat piloting. They may formally train lower-level pilots, and they may lead lower-level pilots in combat situations, absent a commander. They form the core of strike force operations as necessary.

Veteran pilots have the following requirements:
1. Obey the instructions of commanders at all times, unless those instructions violate Guild law.
2. Set a proper example for guardian and cadet pilots in all aspects of Guild life.

Veteran pilots have the following privileges:
1. May pursue wing commander rank upon a position vacancy.
2. May participate in confirmations votes for division director AND for Guild Master.
3. May ask for escort/patrol fees in the first rate range.
4. Contribute ideas or voice concerns and grievances to supervisor or division director.

Wing Commander
As opposed to the preceding levels of expertise, Wing Commander rank designates command authority on the part of the holder. This individual has proved to have both a sound tactical mind and leadership skills, may command combat pilots in all combat situations in line with Defense Division guidelines and Guild strategy. Only veteran-level pilots may apply for a vacant wing commander slot.

Wing commanders have the following requirements:
1. Obey the instructions of the Defense Director, DGM or GM.
2. Conduct tactical operations within Guild policy guidelines and diplomacy.

Wing commanders have the following privileges:
1. May apply for Guild leadership position (directorship and up) upon vacancy.

R&D Division

Explorers: IMG|Firstname.Surname[E]
Armoury(ies)

The R&D division is IMG's cutting edge. An assortment of scientists, explorers, and technical experts, this division investigates that which is unknown around us in order to develop the most advanced approaches and technology for the issues that concern the Guild. All exploration pilots are evaluated and classified according to Defense Division expertise levels. Exploration vessels may participate in escort or patrol operations as desired, if properly equipped.

Guild Leadership Ranks

Guild Master (GM)
The IMG Guild Master has ultimate responsibility for the safety and welfare of Guild members, as well as for the Guilds collective success or failure. The GM is elected upon vacancy by a majority vote of masters within the Guild. The GM is also reviewed every six months, at which time the masters conduct a vote of confidence. If the GM receives a majority against, it is considered a vote of no confidence, and he or she must step down from the position, though retaining membership in the Guild. The GM must have achieved highest level competence in at least one Guild profession. Direct reports: DGM, division directors, diplomatic envoys.

Deputy Guild Master (DGM)
The Deputy Guild Master assists the GM in all areas of operational oversight. The DGM also handles special assignments as needed from the GM, and acts with full GM authority in the GMs absence. The DGM is appointed by the GM, but directors can provide feedback on DGM performance, and such is taking into account during regular GM confirmations. The DGM must have achieved master level competence in at least one Guild profession. Direct reports: division directors.

Economic Director
The Economic Director oversees both mining and trading operations for the Guild. The director develops and analyzes both mining sites and trade routes, and may appoint assistants as needed in those endeavors. The director is responsible for the conduct and professional development of all members under his/her oversight, and manages development records for each, including certification of level promotion. The director is also authorized to conduct business deals with other organizations, as long as said contracts are consistent with Guild policy. The director must have achieved master level competence in mining and/or trading. Direct reports: mining and trade supervisors (if applicable; otherwise, all miners and traders).

Defense Director
The Defense Director oversees the military division of the Guild. This director develops, in cooperation with the GM, military policy and all necessary strategic plans for the protection of Guild operations, and is subsequently responsible for the successful implementation of those plans. The director also develops and oversees all training of Guild combat pilots, and manages development records for each, including certification of level promotion. The director or designee oversees any individual military operation. The director must have achieved veteran-level competence in combat/escort operations, and must have served in that capacity for at least three months. Direct reports: commanders (if applicable; otherwise, all combat pilots).

R&D/Provisions Director
Active, ongoing research and development is critical to Guild success and continued autonomy. Exploration, science, ship and equipment development all fall under the auspices of this director. This director also oversees the shipbuilding operations of the Guild, creating and delivering to the Economic Director regular quota schedules for resources required through mining and trade operations. The director must have achieved highest level competence in at least one Guild profession, preferably within the economic division. Direct reports: exploration and science personnel, quartermaster.

Leadership Accountability
Because most of our members have come from situations of corporate injustice and exploitation, IMG has instituted several measures as checks against potential abuse of power by its leaders. The first such check is that while the GM may countermand any decision from a subordinate at any time, the GMs own decisions can be countermanded by a unanimous decision of all three division directors (not including the DGM).

The second major check is that all journeymen-/guardian-level members and above conduct a vote of confidence for division directors every three months. In addition, all master-/veteran-level members conduct a vote of confidence every four months for the GM. (These are staggered so as to maintain continuity in operations.) In either type of vote, a 60% vote against a director or the GM will be grounds for removal from office.

Member Representatives: Within IMG, member representatives are the key to leadership accountability. These individuals, while in the course of their other regular duties, are charged with listening to, tracking, and presenting to Guild leadership the concerns of all Guild members. This is a voluntary position, and the number of representatives changes depending on the number of members in the Guild. Journeyman or guardian level required.

Edit 10/10/08: Added membership roster.
Again, excellent, excellent work on a exemplary faction proposal.

My only suggestion is to include some of your diplomacy regarding IMG-controlled Freeports, particularly The Hood and FP4. After all they aren't exactly regular bases, but almost truly neutral ground. I can see a lot of great RP coming in from that angle.

And yes, the Hood is actually considered a Freeport.

Thanks, elgato. This is an important point, as raised by a couple of our members. We'll be putting together policy statements on these as well as several other important diplomatic issues facing us. Stay tuned. :)
Are we just -that- awesome?:P
Looks good, good luck on your faction.
Now for someone else to be stressed by the on-going silence of their thread, expecting flames to emerge at the last second...:P

Anyway, could we expect anything less when we have these people involved? Nicely done, as always.
Any particular reason AFA is listed as unfreindly? Doesnt really make sense to me. Same with the Corsairs.

Corsairs as unfriendly is likely from vanilla, as Corsairs were a threat to the IMG bases in Dublin and Omega 7. I think Trev's proposal is trying to distance the IMG from the =CR='s... Diplomacy.
Sorry Zelot - I think you're right. I'll edit AFA. Corsairs stay for now.

Nope, we hope to be a great faction:)
