Clicking on sent messages, I got this mysql error -

Code:
MyBB has experienced an internal SQL error and cannot continue.

SQL Error:

1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near 'Holliday,Jihadjoe)' at line 1

Query:

SELECT uid, username, usergroup, displaygroup FROM mybb_dgc_users WHERE uid IN (kingvaillant,Doc Holliday,Jihadjoe)

If your PM inbox/outbox is full of old messages, they're probably inaccessible because of one of the forum software updates in the last few years. In order to read them you'll have to choose "Download Messages" to get a text-file dump of all the messages in said folder, and then wipe the entire folder.
