Well I been reading the forums for the past few months, but only as of past couple days decided to actually start posting.
Anyways, happened upon this thread and it said something about getting a warm welcome, and I think I'd like a warm welcome haha, sooo here I am.
couple things about me?
umm...
aside from family, most know me as Brill
I am a sail boat racer but its winter here now, so I have to find a means of wasting time during the off season. And no sailboat racing isnt "ladida oh look at me I'm posh, I never eat a meal that doesnt cost 30 bucks". Its one of the hardest sports in the world, the storms I've been through while racing(we don't quit racing just cause of a brutal storm at 3am) arent even comparable to anything in life I've experienced on land. I've seen people get extremely hurt and near drowned a few dosen times, but they get back to their job on the boat to keep it racing(even if they ripped all the skin off one hand). And its all free...at the beginning of last season, I walked down the dock to the first racing boat i saw, a 43 foot boat named Edge. From that point I was on a crew, racing, getting free meals on each race day, and free booze after the races. If you havent gone sailboat racing and ever in your lifetime get offered, take the person up on that offer, there is nothing like it.
back to discovery, I think that as I read more and more, I began to not only get a sense of what all the factions were fighting/striving for, but i also got a sense of all the great individual personalities that go into these forums, and I love it, which is why I decided to make a welcome post and start posting/making an addition to the large pool of intellect that Disco has become.
so yeah...thats pretty much all I care to talk about right now to you disco folk.
oh and I have this old thing written from a while ago that you may or may not find interesting....i don't know.
"Have you ever tried to explain to a nonsailor what makes sailing so fascinating and challenging, or harder yet, justify why it ofter seems that the only thing sailors talk about is sailing? Take pro football-a pretty comple sport, right? but every game is played on the same size feild, in the same amount of time, against the same amount of people, week after week, all over the country. Now imagine, just for a minute, that every field was a different size; that, in fact the boundaries changed during the game. furthermore, the playing surfacemoved along under the feet of the players and varied in speed and direction throughout the game. In addition some areas of the field were soggy, others icy, and still others sandy, with irregular one foot high ridges running all over. The game would still be the intricate offensive vs. defensive with high premium on excellent individual performances. But there would only be 11 guys per team. no specialist teams, no offensive unit seperate from the defensive unit, no punt return team, and no guy to come out just to kick the extra point. In fact, there would be no substitutes, no trainers, and no coaches high up in the grandstands looking down on the game, analyzing the upcoming defensive formations and use...In addition...there would be no referees passing instant judgements on rule infractions. Rather, the infractions would be noted down and, after the game, those involved would appear before a panel of austere and knowlegable judges who may or may not have watched the game. Both gentlemen would have the the opportunity to state what happened, question each other and determine the exact place and nature of the alleged infraction, and call witnesses to aid in their case...when you stop to think about it sailing is possibly the most complex sport in the world"
