Lurked a while, thought I should say hello, toying with faction idea.

Hey there!

To join factions can always be a good idea if you want to play together with other people on a more regular basis. It however is no must, in my opinion. You can enjoy your time as an indie player just as much, I'd say.

Welcome! I know I trigger a few narcistic faction leaders with this again, but I recommend to stay as a lone wolf as long as you can, as it prevents you getting drawn into biases and ooRP conflicts. Discovery has so much more charm when you don't know the people behind the characters/ships.
