Full Version: Better Bering Suggestions

So after numerous community complaints (including my own) about the quality of Bering in comparison to discovery systems, it's clear that the majority community sentiment is that Bering needs to change, whilst keeping the features that make it fun.

This is partially because it suffers from the following:

1) It's a vanilla system. Vanilla systems were way more asset efficient than they needed to be.

2) It was designed as a transit system with no reason to stick around. Now it's a major mining and conflict system for lawfuls, unlawfuls, and Quasi lawfuls.

3) It now has amazing jump hole connections and is one of the most frequently travelled independent worlds. It's a bottleneck.

The basic premise of Bering - asteroids over most of the system around a central star, no terrestrial planets, crawling with pirates, is a good one. What would you like to see in a New Bering, without changing any of the dockables? Feel free to suggest adding/changing/removing solars, fields, colour schemes, particles, wrecks, station wrecks, baxter objects, protoplanets, big-ass rocks, anything you like.

The intent is to make the system as content rich as Thuringia or Kansas, with similar verticality to a system such as Zurich to better monopolise on Bering's small 15 by 15 grids. This will be more than just a visual pass. It will be a re-imagining and an attempt to improve rather than a retcon.

I'll try to compromise between all suggestions, will get back with a finished outcome, and then send the package off to the System devs. Whilst this isn't an officially sponsored project they have voiced interest in seeing what the outcome is, and support the idea of a Bering revamp.

Wild and crazy ideas are completely encouraged.

Some ideas I've been playing with:

That last one looks interesting. Whatever you do, DO NOT add more ice asteroids, those things are everywhere in disco.
The southern zone needs to look more like a warzone. Scattered pockets of mines, the occasional wrecked fighter. Bering lacks the look of an active combat zone. Ofcourse your not going to find static battleships deployed around in a battle line like London, but a cruiser here, battlecruiser there.
Yea because it's not. You need to actually fight for the place to be a war zone.

Not the thread for this breed of comments.

A few battleship wrecks with storied infocards would give that appearance. Mines are good so long as they don't obstruct movement, just add atmosphere.

Would Harmony want a Minefield around Marshall? Bear in mind it's something you'd need to think about not flying into.

Noted. If I do have ice asteroids they'll be offplane things like comet tails or an above plane field to break up the backdrop. I'm thinking about them as there's elements of the skybox that are a bit ice-y. The majority of the system will still be big dumb rocks.
