Try installing directplay with protontricks
Thanks guys, after some fiddling this worked =)
Only issue I have now is that alt tabbing returns me to a black screen when I tab back in. I guess this can be solved with some windowed mode tweaks maybe.
Use virtual desktop or whatever its called - it will fix the alttab issue
