"Carinea's Organic Poison"

Planet Carinea, situated in Omicron Alpha, surrounded by Siniestre Cloud, orbited by Santa Verna as its desolate moon, Maltese graveyard to the north, with prosperous biosphere, containing an organic poison restricting any self sufficient settlement and dense forests.

The organic poison contained within every living animal and plant on Carinea is programmed to attack anything else containing incompatible DNA to its own by producing acidic chemicals around its membrane and later consuming the remains. Tests have shown the organisms can produce these acids up to 10 minutes until they're left with critical reserves of energy. Research has discovered these are capable of breaking down glucose into energy much like humans and animals. Their general structure is very similar to the ones humans have, hinting there might be a common ancestor or a similar way of life development, albeit, latter is currently the accepted theory.

The planet is not covered by large oceans, but the positioning of the smaller ones allows for quick evaporation of water and eventual condensation in the form of rain. Frequent fogs are also a direct result of this. Climate overall is very stable with temperatures between 4°C and 39°C. With Siniestre Cloud covering the atmosphere entirely, sunlight is reduced to only about 30% of its original brightness from outside of the cloud. Due to this, the development of life on this planet has been slowed down with amphibians being on top of the food chain and no significant evolution in the past years.

Aquatic organisms have shown a great amount of diversity in each of the small oceans the planet houses. Each appears to be locked to its environment and does not actively seek to expand beyond its living space. What might be the most intriguing thing is their ability to suicide if they're too old, sick or the population density reaches a certain point. Some of the species have not been yet named, though the research about their abilities to self regulate continues.

Amphibians, with only few species to choose from, they mainly differentiate by the coloring of their skin according to the temperature and humidity. Their diet is mostly composed of the local flora and fauna. Some samples have shown abilities of self regeneration which is still under the research for future use or integration into Maltese medicine.

The IRMM has weaponized this poison in the form of personal handheld grenades that are capable of unleashing mortal amounts of high density toxins for around 60 seconds, killing any numbers of people in a room with dimensions of 20x20x3 meters if there's no ventilation. Human samples have shown a great amount of tissue decomposition after the experiment was done and bodies left for 15 minutes until it was safe to enter the room. While experimenting, full body protection suits and filters are required as the poison will be absorbed in small amounts into body and cause rotten tissue to appear at the exposed parts. For use in land conflicts, it's advised to put on a gasmask and clear the surrounding area where such grenade was unleashed. Though, Maltese are less prone to death when exposed to small amounts thanks to the healing effects of Cardamine.
