Dunno if this is even remotely possible to implement but how about Ship Insurance:

Payments are made at every docking (could be only a credit or two depending on where you dock in relation to where you start).

For RP if you die near a:

Friendly Base - Insurance pays for a new ship and takes the scrap of your old one
Neutral Base - Insurance pays for a new ship but doesn't get the carcass of the old one
Enemy Base - Insurance pays for a new ship but also has to ransom you to get delivery to the other base.

With each death your insurance goes up but if you die near Friendly bases it doesn't go up much.

Insurance is optional so when you're starting out as a newb you can get by without Insurance but if you die without Insurance you end up in a Starflier again.

The longer gametime you put in without losing a ship the lower your Insurance gets.

As well as beginning and end base, Insurance is higher for the more expensive Ships.

Traders who are in a Group (presumably an Escort) have lower Insurance.
If you're suggesting this as a kind of "Losing money when you die" then no. It's been suggested before, and declined by the community each time. We simply don't want to have to spend half our time trading just so we can afford to play our fighters and capital ships.
I can imagine the crapstorm the traders of Disco would object to that... Hard enough with the sheer amount of pirates, and the lower price economy. Most find it hard enough to be bothered to trade as it currently is >.>

Edit: Also, losing a 100-200mil ship because of a single death, no thanks.

I myself have only been pirated one time efficiently. And that was a Farmer about a week ago. Else then that? What pirats? Altough, i can think of one time, when a Nova did blow me out of space while i already accepted the money transfer with....... nah, not the right place.

Towards the idea: It sounds like you'd loose your ship and get some other ship if you die. No, please not.
To loose cash because of death in any manner is a ''No''.
There already are enough people who try to avoid death with ways like nano refill or constant evadeing because of the 4hour rule or because of simple rudeness.
There is no need for such a idea, even if it would make things more realistic.
NO.

this would be vary realistic, but it would screw up the game compleatly. the only thing it would make people do is leave. hell, if this happend I might leave, and i can think of many people who would as well.

Try the Bretonia-Liberty route using the lanes. Lucky day if you don't get hit more than once.

I dread to think of the amount I'd have to pay for insurance for my BPA ship... Or people who've got military ships at all.
No...
This would RAPIDLY decline numbers in discovery communit, as you would need to trade even more to pay for a fighter, let alone a cap
No, already tried eve and it wasn't fun.
oh yeah, and Connecticut (arena) wouldn't count of course.

(yes of course you don't pay a (real-life'ish) realistic amount, that would be silly)
