The "don't simply switch characters and rejoin the fight" is there mostly IMHO to give players a chance to cool down, and to be fair to the victors who reasonably shouldn't be expecting a new enemy to appear literally out of nowhere, especially one that is fresh and ready for battle.
But a home or guard system can reasonably be expected to be well-populated with the home faction so having a new home-faction-only character pop up all shiny and ready to rumble should actually be expected and not only RP but *suggested* RP.
Obviously only good if:
a) home or guard system
b) both ships are home or guard faction
c) both ships are operated by different characters
so IMnsHO the OP should have not only been broadcasting support, but should have reengaged in his other ship/character (assuming both characters were RP different and both ships are faction/guard ID&IFF)
