I've recently started playing Freelancer and using the Discovery mod - this morning I upgraded my ship for the first time.
However - it would not transfer my tractor beam to my new ship. Is that a glitch, or do I have to go buy a new one? If so, where would I go to purchase one? Thank you for your assistance.
A search for 'tractor beam' or 'IDs' should get you your answers.

However, since you posted.

Your tractor beam is now an ID, you need an ID to tell people if your a freelancer, a neutral or if you belong to one of the numerous NPC factions.

All IDs are sold on any base or planet.

However, each base will either only sell civilian IDs, which is the one you get and can use until you hit level 40, or they will also sell an ID for the faction that owns the base/planet.

The neutral and freelancer IDs are scattered around too.

Ah, so I get a civvy ID then. Do the IDs serve any purpose in offline play?
In offline play, there is this neat piece of hardware called "A Light Tractor beam" that you just need to make sure you transfer over. I haven't actually seen a heavy one, but the light one does the job.

The ID's work too in SP, but the tractor beam mount works as well. The idea of combining the tractor beam and ID is really just an incentive to get you to hold one. It is also ILLEGAL to fly around w/o an ID. NPCs will not bother you, but you can get shot at or fined if player controlled lawfuls catch ya.

In MP, the tractor beam mount does not exist.

best place for all online id tags is on new london planit .
that is of coarse for regular id tags, non pirate.

Pirate ids are at pirate baces.
"best place for all online ID tags is on new london"

What do you mean by that warhorse?

The prices are all the same everywhere...right?
ok here, price of all the IDs of same rank is the same, everywhere they're sold

valid before reaching level 40 -- Civilian ID - 500cr (sold on EVERY base, rep must be neutral to buy)
valid after reaching level 40 -- Freelancer ID, Neutral ID (500,000cr sold on capital planets, need to be neutral to buy)
valid after reaching level 40 -- Faction ID (500,000cr sold on capital planets/main bases, must be full green to buy)
Yes, Night has the right list.

What is the difference between FL and Neutral IDs though?
Quote:Freelancer ID
Pilot carrying this ID is a freelancer who chose not to join any factions, but rather work for himself or herself. Freelancer ID grants its owner right to participate in all kinds of lawful and unlawful activities, fulfil bounty contracts and trade.
Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Gunboats, Cruisers, Battleships
Carrying unmounted IDs in your ship, as well as not equipping an ID, is a serious crime.

Quote:Neutral ID
Pilot carrying this ID has declared himself or herself lawful and neutral towards all factions. Neutral ID grants its owner right to trade, escort traders, hunt pirates and terrorists, fulfil bounty contracts. Neutral ID owner cannot participate in any unlawful actions or military operations.

Neutral ID is sold only in House space. Read the infocards people, that's why they're there.

Basically, the Neutral one means you're neutral but lawful. Freelancer ID grants you freedom to be neutral and chaotic.

Btw, while we're on the topic. If you choose any of the two, specially Neutral ID, don't use the 'I'm a Freelancer/Neutral, why did you shot me?'. It makes perfect sense to get shot as a lawful character (Neutral ID) by an unlawful. Also, if you have a Freelancer ID you will most certainly have a tag and in regard to that tag... you might get shot, it shows for whom you were working way too much. At least that's how I see it.
Yeah...

You might actually have a better chance of getting shot at while wearing the Freelancer/Neutral ID, rather than a faction ID.
