This is a quick draft of how I think of armour upgrades in Discovery.

Now, a though occurs to me, what is the armour upgrades INTENDED for?

In a PvP sense , I can see the reason, in some ships PvP is short at times since light fighters stand little chance against a skilled opponent, but sometimes an upgrade can give the less skill a good buffer against damage while the better skilled pilot out performs the enemy.

In the roleplay aspect, I can understand and see the reasoning behind the armour upgrades as a means to make a ship 'unique' and more powerful than their standard counterparts. Better armour means better survivability, amongst other things.

As of late and prior, I wonder if its worth it. Sure, I believe in a little bit longer PvP combat in the right places, but lets face it, most if not all have a lot of VIII armour combat characters.


Armour upgrades is both a blessing and a curse, but what do YOU see them as? A PvP upgrade or a RP upgrade?


I try to be as neutral as possible in polls but for reference I shall make my opinion clear.

I see the upgrades as a way for some players to get an advantage over those who do no trade, or not put hours into missions. The upgrades, while I enjoy to give me some chance in RP during combat, some sometimes I think , its just for PvP, which this server is not geared for.

What is your opinion?
Take away armour and you will increase the ammount of BSs flying around, as they will be able to instakill -everything- as with the BS turret dammage buff, a single hit on an unarmoured bomber will kill it.

Also, it will mean that almost every transport short of the shire can be instakilled by a single supernova shot, completely obliterating any chance of fair-play in the transport v pirate area.

So in general, i dont think it would be a good idea, as it would ruin the very carefully worked PvP balence, and thus ruin most peoples ability to RP undisturbed by PvP/cap whores.
To be honest, what we need is to reduce the amount of bots/bats

This slipped my mind, but what if the Supernova was given a nerf to compensate?

Depending on the size of the nerf, it could either make things a lot better, or much more likely screw up bomber v cap combat completely by making bombers totally ineffective against large caps (Rheinland BS for example).

And with the massive ammount of balence work that would be needed to get it right would completely negate any benefit that could be found (i dont see any frankly).

Plus, i think armour upgrades (especially cap ones) add a great ammount of variety to the game, and plus, in PvP, armour isnt everything.


Edit: One more thing i forgot, cap v cap combat would be almost completely ruined, for example, if my legate is attacked by a mako, the mako having 620,000 armour, would be instakilled by a single heavy mortar shot of mine (the hevy mortar doing 680,000 hull dammage). Also, battle razors would instakill almost all GBs (except the Bretonian one), given the fact that they do 140,000 hull dammage and are so fast they can snipe LFs that are not careful, making GBs obselete in fleet battles.
Fighters and bombers (more fighters) would die very quickly.
Not much would change for transports (cause barely any traders equip armor)
Gunboats would either die or be lethal killing weapons.
Larger caps would be almost 1 hitting each other.

Really, many of the weapons have been designed to take into account the fact that everyone has 2.0 or greater armor.
-Everyone- flying a fighter/bomber has the top armour. Its just annoyingly expensive and adds $15mil to the price tag of your next ship. Maybe get rid of it, but buff fighter/bomber armour all round?

Capital armour, I think, should be varied. Have special abilities for different ships, different houses. More specialised armour for what you're gonna be going up against. Eg: Armour which resists bomber fire more than other capital ship fire (and vice versa). Have the flagships of each military have enhanced armour and the people who write up excellent RP back stories to have access to specialised armour (If its in their RP).

Thoughts? My logic is probably flawed in oh so many ways:P

EDIT: More informative post later, currently on DUSA for an event.
I personally think it is needed,but think the price should be a qhole lot higher.Also take up more cargo space.
I would also like to see ship class Armour upgrade's for all type's IE LF/HF/VHF/CAP/TRANSPORT,and only these can use the armour that is meant for them. So no more class VIII used on every single ship.

PS. Make each armour upgrade reduce ship speed a little. So speed,or armour becomes a factor.
