Hey folks, while watching the news (oh how depressing) I realized that disasters can have a pretty nasty jolt on the economy as a whole, taking the Russian wild fires and the latest Australian floods as an example have a global impact.

Therefore, why not have some 'mini-disaster' events in Discovery? This would be a nice change from wars and scaremongering and whatnot, this could also give the police and traders something to do and work together on. I'll give you an example.

Planet Pittsburgh has a massive earthquake that causes massive damage to the mining infrastructure and has caused many casualties in the mining complexes in the southern hemisphere. The governor of Pittsburgh has declares a state of emergency in the area and is calling for supplies ranging from medical to machinery to dig out trapped miners and to repair damage caused by the earthquakes.

In this example, it may seem small on the sector scale of things, but the local supply and demand shifts exponentially, instead of supplying cheap Boron (is it?) it's price skyrockets due to the infrastructure damage and demand for pharmaceuticals, robotic machinery and other materials required goes really high. This causes a local boom for certein goods for private organizations, especially freight. It could also get the police forces involved in RP to escort the shipments due to its 'high value' in the public's eyes.

These events could be done every so often and in theory, only requires a few bases to have their item price lists altered rather than a whole bunch.

Feedback?
I like this, maybe we need some active developers that update the server's newsboard too, I could do that too.
Yes please! Finally some actual economy in this game! RP would be like WOOOOT! and trade would be like WOOOOT! and pirates would be like WOOOOT! so Police/Navy would be like CRAAAAP!
So yeah.
Gives relief organizations something to do as well. But it would mean a higher workload on the server admin and economy management staff. Good idea, not sure it's feasable.
Nice idea.

Along those lines.

Weekly (bi weekly, once a month...doesnt matter) price changes in commodities would add some spice to the game. You would not be stuck running the same route all the time.

Ive always been wondering as to whether advancements in the game story (The outcome of the Lib and Rm war as an example) are dependent on how much Cargo is transported to the front lines. Or how many ships of each side has been shot down. How do you know who is winning a conflict for example?

Didn't we have something like that before? But only once, some Water Shipment in Yukon failed and the Water Price boomed.

Yeah more of that, but in other Areas than Liberty.
People submit ideas, dedicated small dev team approves whatever they think will work, write up the code for them, and chuck it in the SVN or whatever Disco uses.

It's not 'More work' if you get 'More People'.
I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd be willing to do so, even learn the basic coding for News and stuff.
It's been done.
It can be done easily.
It should be done.
It isn't done.

Why?

No one does it.
I don't say 'cool idea' to cool ideas that requires people other than me to work on it. But it's a cool idea.

And...

Fletch! Are you back? Happy 819 man!
cool idea. pm me if you want help working on it
