I found out that something interesting is going on with mining.

We all know about the mining mod and some people, including me complained about some aspects of it.

Well, it seems that the mining areas have been fixed.

Now you can take pretty much any old ship into a mining zone and mine for things.....at the vanilla drop rate.

However, if you have the required items for 'professional' mining, your drop rates are dramatically improved.

The really cool bit is that no matter what sort of guns you are using to mine with, it goes straight to your cargo hold.

Now, I'm not sure if it is all mining areas, but the Penny's Helium cloud and the Scrap Field behind Manhatten are dropping at vanilla rates for sure.

What's the average yield for scrap there?

Not such a cool thing if you're fighting in a minable field and your hold gets filled up with unwanted stuff rather than the contents of the holds of your dead enemies.

There is what Cannon wrote about the mining changes.
I try mining scrap metal in debris field in front of manhatten, and it has good droprate, but i got nothing when mining helium in penny

Drops in the scrap field are not great, although I was just waiting for rogues to turn up and I shot a few 'rocks' to relieve the boredom, not like I was actually there mining.

Out of a half dozen or so 'rocks' I think I got 3 or 4 scrap.

The helium cloud behind Planet Erie seems to drop between 2-8 units a rock...when it drops, which seems to be 1 out of every 2 or so. I wasn't counting, I was just happy that it was working again.

Like I said, not great, but better than a kick in the teeth if you are an almost down and out trader looking for a way to make a few dollars to get back on your feet again.

Thanks for pointing that out.
Drop rates are actually at half vanilla - for ore types this typically means 1/8th or less of the drop rates corporations get. On places with huge drop rates, like water clouds, this allows you to get some spare cargo rather quickly - but only low value cargo really.

This was intentionally set so that escorts can assist in the mining process, albeit marginally.

Like I said, if you are a trader with a brand new ship, that has discovered that they have spent most of their money and they *still* don't have a full set of turrets and they have ended up selling all of their bots/bats to get a half a load of cargo (this is what happened to me when I got my Akageta recently), finding out that you can get FREE cargo of any sort just by flying to the nearest mining zone, is a gift from HER. (TAZ will know what I mean by 'HER')
ive been sat in the he feild for 15 mins now shooting rocks got NOTHING

am i doing something wrong?
