Is it possible to play on RP server as a character not affiliated with any distinct faction. Let us say, that, perhaps, he was a formerly a part of BMM. But, for some reason, decided to quite his job and do whatever he darn well pleases. You would not really be able to think of a reason why that sort of character would not be possible. And, in-game, it would be fun to play the part of a bitter old drifter, wandering around the sector.

This game is called Freelancer you can certainly be a Freelancer!
Another ID that might be good for you if yr a BMM drop out, is the Miner ID, free to wander sirius unaffiliated, and gets a bonus mining stuff, when using the right tools.
