Okay, so let's get started. We all know that the bigger objects are having a larger profile and can be detected by radars on long long ranges (example: Ships in the sea) when the smaller objects are harder to detect because they, uff, small.

Idea, if it is even possible, is to vary the detection range on different scanners for ships of different classes.

You can have a vast number of scanners now but it only affects the range of cargo scanning, might be possible to vary the detection range as well.

For instance (and for example):

Battleship Scanner detection ranges:

Capital ships:

BS.
Heavy - 20k
Medium - 18k
Light - 15k
Cruiser.
Heavy - 15k
Medium - 13k
Light - 11k
GB.
Heavy - 10k
Medium - 9k
Light - 8k
Transports:

Freighters = small transports
Small transports - 8k
Medium transports - 10k
Big transports - 12k
Snubcrafts.
SHF\Bomber - 10k
VHF - 9k
HF - 8k
LF - 5k
Discovery Scanner detection ranges:

Capital ships:

BS.
Heavy - 16k
Medium - 12k
Light - 8k
Cruiser.
Heavy - 9k
Medium - 7k
Light - 6k
GB.
Heavy - 7k
Medium - 6k
Light - 5k
Transports:

Freighters = small transports
Small transports - 7k
Medium transports - 8k
Big transports - 9k
Snubcrafts.
SHF\Bomber - 9k
VHF - 9k
HF - 7k
LF - 4k
And so on. Range can be vary according to ship's class and infocard, for example recon cruiser (order) might have smaller detection range because it's supposed to be sneaky. Etc etc.

Opinions?

Note: detection range = range when then ship appears at your target list. Visually you will still be able to find the ship if he is big enough and standing in front of sun or planet. Also all gas clouds and asteroid fields might have the variety of penalties for detection ranges like -10%, -20%, -30% depending on field type.
I'm not sure why, space is empty.
Even with modern day radar, it would be incredibly easy to spot a ship at huge ranges.

We can only assume whatever system they use to scan space in modern-day Sirius is more advanced, and it seems like this idea really only expands the silliness of the entire situation.

Because as it stands, you can see things before your radar system can. Seems sorta pointless, no?

Yes, but honestly the range of 20k is relatively freaking huge. Space in freelancer is 9000+ times smaller then the real space, mean the 20k range in freelancer is 20 * over nine thousands clicks times bigger.
But the fact that detection range is varying for smaller and bigger objects stays.
Pirates instantly approve.
Snobbish pirates who think it's lame to do the job in a gunboat approve too.
So as traders that like the challenge and being shot.

That's three approval just from me. :)
LFs don't need a pitiful 5k scanner range. They're only useful as scouts in most circumstances as it is, so they don't need that sort of reduction.

Admittedly, the overall concept is interesting and has some merit. Personally, I'd like to see the differences kept among the capital classes and keep it more uniform amongst fighters and transports.
Make cruisers and battleship detectable from 30-50k and we can get rid of 6.7 rule.

Myea, you'll be sure to detect them on the far side of a jumphole or gate.

As for the original poster, I do not think this is technically feasable without creating seperate versions of the scanner for each ship class, which frankly, is more work then the payout. Scanner ranges are tied to the scanner itself, and for the most part do not affect how quickly you see other players.
Personally I would want the devs to fix normal detection ranges first.

You cannot select a Valor or a Zoner jugy until you are well inside 8K which is very frustrating.

You got it wrong.

It's the range when the listed vessels will appear on scanner regarding to their class\size not the range when they will be able to detect other vessels.

Mean for example you're a Cruiser with battleship scanner. The fleet approaches you.

First you'll see their big toys - battleships. Then smaller caps. And in the end you'll be able to detect the snubs at much closer range.

So it's reversed. The LF will be spotted by other vessels at extremely close range while he'll be able to see the bigger ships from much longer ranges.

Ahh, that makes a lot more sense.
