Thats pretty much where i am in the discovery universe right now
As opposed to talking to some security rep and ending up saving the universe, does anyone have any tips to how an average citizen can pay his way?
A few vital do's and don'ts would also be greatly appreciated

I had a brief read over the rules. Is it legal to explore in a miner?
You can explore as whatever... I just wouldn't reccommend several kinds of 'whatevers'

Best ship for exploration are VHFs with IDs that are not too close bound to a certain faction and thus to a ZOI.
If you got a Scraper, you can stick with this one for now.
Civillian ones like Wasupu, Ravens Talon. Popular with Freelancers and Mercs.
Border World vessels like the Sabre. Most popular ship on this server.
BHG has a huge ZOI, that'd be a Manta then. Although Unlawfulls will hate you then.

Roaming around a bit, choose a house you feel suit you and join one of their trade official faction, many benefits you'll get when you join official faction, grind money from it to fund your personal exploration.

Exploring is probably best done on a generic ID such as the FL one, or if you wanna start playing as a specific guy while exploring, junker or zoner's probably best.

Also, welcome. Suggest what Fidelius said. With the addition of "Do join a faction.". I enjoyed being indie back some time ago, but factions can be very fun too. The people there can teach you stuff like PvP and help you with creds and stuff.
