After receiving last months bill for my pee dee gay and wireless laptop connection, I almost had a heart attack!

The only app I was using for internet on my pee dee gay was skype so I scratched around on google for skype bandwidth usage... NASTY!

Idle, skype can use up to 1 Gig a month... the way I was using it, conference calls and all, I hit the 1 gig cap on my laptop in two weeks...

Maybe some of you Gurus can look into this and find us an app that we can still text chat and VOIP with but doesnt eat network bandwidth so enthusiastically!
It's called Teamspeak, and we have two of them here, but the sound quality leaves something to be desired...
yeah.. i know about teamspeak but u cant use it to chat casually like you do skype...

check this nastyness out:

Xfire? teamspeak? Ventrilo?
XFIRE FTW!
The bad thing about skype is that if you have it on almost always you'll end up being a super-node a get a "pleasure" to route other people's calls. My father-in-law has almost allways his comp on 24/7 and it happened to him. It almost ate up his whole upload bandwidth of 512kb.

So. Angelfire: check that if skype sending and receiving a lot of data when you are not making any calls. Pretty nasty surprise, but I'm sure skype has it covered in some obscure terms of use.

The remedy is to shut down the comp or skype.

I think the teamspeak is very good and made for gaming. Having a skype conference is just eating a lot of bandwidth while gaming.
