i have civ 4 complete, and i've seen civ 5, but i wasnt so impressed with the political angle.
true in civ 3 there was no politics, and one cheap unit could block an entire army.
in civ four the politics are 'i/my friend made an arrogant demand which you refused! im unhappy with you!'
in five they've tried to make the poltics little more polishyed, but they are falling behind 'rome: total war'

I played Gods and Kings. It's pretty sick. The Religion buffs are pretty cool, but it doesn't seem like much of a useful tool for diplomacy aside from making it possible to set a default city-state relation of over 30. Then again, diplomacy in Civ 5 is a bit silly in general.
