Spam in flood, ask anything you ever wanted to ask on the forums.
Get involved in a discussion that goes back-and-forth.
Sell ships on the forum.
Create a "telenovela", make a logbook for your characters.
And many other things.
By posting.

Write reports in message dumps for every event, no matter if it's about a fleet engagement, a trade route or someone dropping its pants in public.
I'd like to think that my posts are on the whole, rather constructive and usually more than some of the +1s I see all over the place. However, sitting on the forums all day everyday even allows a 'quality over quantity' strategy to build up a fair amount of them.
Although it might be slightly late to mention this now, being on the forums for several years also helps people to accumulate >1000 posts.
A few 'accidental' double posts can help too.
