- - - The First Fleet External Security & Research Division - - -

- Denoted by the following tag;

[LN]-(callsign)|ESRD, where (callsign) is the designated security codename assigned to any ship belonging to this particular unit.

- Description:

In the near two decades since the end of "The First Nomad War", The Liberty Navy has initiated many different projects and programs of a classified nature, some of which were directly related to different facets of Nomad Research, and others geared toward clandestine military operations meant to improve the state of Libertonian National Security regarding a slew of different threats throughout the Sirius sector, without dragging The Republic into a fullscale war.

In recent times however, The Department of Defense has faced budget cuts, with many Libertonian politicans being overconfident and content to believe that The Libertonian Armed Forces is "The best in Sirius" and therefore that it no longer needs the increasingly large budget it has enjoyed in years past.

The Navy's answer to this, in order to maintain the operational efficiency of it's many programs in the face of budget and support cuts, was the formation of the External Security and Research Division. Formed through the merging of various Libertonian Special Forces units, with units belonging to the Navy's scientific research departments.

A major benefit from this combination is that Naval Special Operations units now have almost instant access to information that previously would have required formal information requests and other bureaucratic hurdles that would hamper operatives in the field. On the opposite side of the coin, the Navy's Research & Development sector can now make use of Special Operations assets in order to more effectively complete and even expand the goals of their scientific missions, again without the need for lengthy formal procedures and paper trails.

This merger has also allowed for the combining of allotted budgets, thereby reducing the adverse effects of budget cuts on critical operations.

Additionally, combining the Special Forces and Science Divisions has proven to be an advantage when it comes to sharing critical or new information with units operating in the field, whose missions were previously affected in an adverse manner due to a lack of appropriate information.

Naval Units affiliated with The ESRD:

- Research & Development Section
- Internal Affairs Division
- MARSOC (Marine Spec Ops Command, control shared with 1st Fleet Admiralty)
- 122nd "Trident Bearers" Force Recon Sqn. (Pilots trained to infiltrate hostile areas, gather intelligence, and conduct raids on military targets.)
- Eagle Wing. (Specialist pilots and commandos trained specifically to deal with "Nomads".)
- Diamondback Initiative. (Deep cover irregular operations unit, deployed behind enemy lines to interdict shipping.)
.

Jensen...Ladies, you certainly are an interesting mix of people.

Nonetheless, the three of you are to report to Willard Station and find yourselves an open bunk-room.

Within forty-eight hours of your arrival to this facility you will be subject to questioning and...other evaluation...to ensure that you fit the desired mold, so to speak.

Fear not, if you do not fit the aforementioned mold you will simply be returned to your old units, no harm done...

That is all...for now.

Director:

I am interested in your division, and believe I may be a good fit for reassignment to it. Currently I command a Bison-class transport in the Liberty Logistics Service, the LLS Mesa Verde.

However, she's served prior to my command in Leeds as an impromptu deployment vessel for Liberty marines, and still possesses the augmentations the yard dogs saw fit to bestow. Frankly, she's not much good as a hauler these days, and so we've been relegating to training exercises in Virginia for the most part. This experience has placed me in command of several units of marines, experience which seems of particular interest to your division.

I believe I also have certain other skills that may be of use. I served a brief stint attached to a BIS cell during my time in the Armed Forces, but that will not appear in the personnel jacket the Navy received upon my arrival - for hopefully obvious reasons. Perhaps your division could make better use of my particular experience, as opposed to the regular Navy, who seems satisfied to allow me to wallow away my time here in endless training exercises.

Regards,

Lieutenant Steven Falkland
CO LLS Mesa Verde

Evening Sir,

I'd like to put my name down for this division. Investigation's what I've been doing most of my life, and I'd like to think I'm good at it. I served a brief stint with the LPI prior to enlistment, and went on to join the MPs, specializing as an Armed Forces Investigator, where I served for ten years.

With the ground forces downsizing, I would like to be somewhere I can put my skills to use and, well, the ESRD looks like a natural fit.

Carter, out.

By the nature of your background I assume you are interested in serving with our Internal Affairs Division.

I would however like to inform you that upon your arrival at Willard, your name will also be submitted for candidacy in one of our MARSOC divisions, your experience as a ground soldier could yet remain valuable.

We shall see. You will find many empty bunks upon your arrival on the lower levels, simply choose one without a name assigned to it, and make yourself comfortable until your minder has arrived.

What lies ahead will not be easy.

That is all.

I am requesting a transfer to the ESRD. I'm currently assigned to New York's Badlands squadron, but I believe my time and talents are wasted on Rogues and petty Outcasts trying to make a name. You know my records, I'm not looking for fame or prestige, that's exactly the opposite of what your group offers, Director. I'm looking forwards to getting the job done and fight the real threat.

Mary Moriss signing off.
