The big Disco timeline database? - lIceColon - 01-01-2014

[Wall of text, please read it all thx]

So. Disco lore.

So much RP content created by so many people, many events players aren't completely aware of.

The progression of Sirius history feels completely disorganized, does not provide an ideal framework for newcomers and people like me.

So I have an idea: The Complete Discovery Timeline Database

an organized repository of stuff, from the mighty explosions of the houses to the insignificant papercut on your powertrader's finger, all dumped into one big timeline database

contributions will be made by everyone to create a structured and complete history of the Discovery Universe. All entries, even those that are contradictory are to be accepted, the purpose of the database is also to help the RP be as less contradictory as possible.

I'm not sure how this could work, but each timeline entry will be made to the effect of follows:

[Precise Date and Time Period] [Summary] [Magnitude] [Location/Faction] [Author] [Full content]

Each will be explained in more detail:

[Precise Date and Time Period]
- this is to pinpoint the exact date and time in which the event occurred on the timeline. Can be either a single figure,
eg. 1/1/821 0800:000
or a time period
eg. 1/1/821 0800:000 to 2/1/821 2359:000
should be as precise as possible.

[Summary]
A single sentence summarizing the event. Perhaps an event could also be a sub-event.

[Magnitude]
- The significance of the event in order to categorize it, perhaps on a scale of 0 to 1, 1 being very important ie. the big picture, and 0 being not important at all.
eg. Edison Trent pricks his nose - magnitude 0.5
eg. Nomads vaporize the sun - magnitude 0.9
This will also be useful for searching the database, so if a newcomer just wants an overview of sirius history he would only search for entries with magnitude 0.9 or higher, something like that. On the other hand, someone looking for interesting bits of forum RP may want to search for an entry of magnitude 0.2-0.3
Of course it is hard to quantify the magnitude of an event, but I'm confident some kind of standard can be established
edit:
>0.9 = Vanilla Lore major event
0.9-0.75 = Disco official lore major event
0.75-0.5 = Vanilla & Disco official lore minor event, major RP event
0.5-0.25 = RP story with multiple participants
0.25-0.15 = Ongoing Individual RP story
0.15-0.05 = Minor event
<0.05 = other

[Location/Faction]
People and places involved. Usually tied in with Magnitude.
Can be a planet, eg. Planet Leeds, The Maquis
or the whole universe,
eg. Sirius, Team Liberty Universe Police
or an insignificant location
eg. Grocery store A in city B of Planet C of system D, Grocery Store A

[Author]
Source of information. Something that identifies the author. If its by a user, could have a tag on the name that identifies the entry as either part of official lore or not.
- Vanilla Lore
- Official Discovery Lore
- Disco Wiki/url 2/Jan/2014
- Username (Official Lore)

[Full Content]
Can be a link to forum RP, or a copy paste or a video or images etc.

ofc there's still the matter of what software to use, which I have no clue about. Perhaps something that generates timelines?

...thoughts?

This is a fantastic idea and I commend you for coming up with it. The only problem I forsee is actually getting people to contribute to it. Not to mention that right now we've had so many events that it might be near impossible to categorize it all on a timeline.

Still, I hope that this idea works out!

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - lIceColon - 01-01-2014

The contribution problem might be solved if the timeline is integrated in forum RP post creation where the author could optionally add the post to the timeline.

This is a rather...delicate thing, you are trying to do there. I would go as far as to suggest that you include all the OORP moments during the course of Disco as well as the IRP ones.

However, at the same time, I would prefer if it was complied and done by someone, who has more knowledge of 84, 83 and 7X times.

EDIT: The information can be gathered and submitted by all members of the community, but we need a small team of, preferably, admin-approved vets, who actually put it all together.

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - ProwlerPC - 01-02-2014

OMG is there anyone leftover from pre .83? Ambitious project. Well Microsoft provided such detailed work on GMG lore that we built a timeline somewhere and can easily fill in what happened after the Nomad War to present day at least. I'll poke around some old stuff. Sadly my big library is on another HD buried somewhere, I'm not sure what I copied over onto this one. My photobucket contains all the infocards I used as evidence in forum debates but isn't my complete library.

4.78/4.79/4.80 were still "ship and system pack" days, before it became a RP server. I've still got a copy of v4.79 and v4.80, I think.

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - Ironwatsas - 01-02-2014

I've been here since 4.84, and I am aware of events going back to the RM/TBH war, Phantoms/Asgard Warriors War, BULLDOGNK incident, and others.

I can name a few major events I've been involved in, in rough chronological order (as can be remembered off the top of my head).

Kusari/Bretonia war begins.
"Junker Air" incident.
[GC]/Agnus-Dei conflict.
"Morioka RP"/Project OLYMPUS
Height of New Berlin/Kyushu Diamond Run
Phantom Bombing of Cambridge
First coming of Ame-chan
Tensions between GMG/Kusari (dragged on for a little while)
522nd Rebellion against [LN]
[MR] ally with Bretonia against Kusari
Colorado Silver Rush! (concurrent with invention of the mining system)
PFI) dumps toxic waste on Gaians (hilarity ensues)
Udo Ackermann gets a Serious Sunburn (Because Nomads)
Consortium invasion of Touhoku
Udo Ackermann goes to Jail, RHA/LWB bust him out later
Ame-chan kills all the Blood Dragons. All of them.
Udo Ackermann goes to the Spirit World, they send him back.
"Citizen Katz" incident
Wilde teleport Omega-58
Udo Ackermann goes to Gensokyo (Ame-chan does too!)
Kusari gets pwned by Gallia (silly)
Gallia invades Bretonia (silly)
Inari Shrine Political Action Committee
Kaido Maharu assassination attempt
Ame-chan comes back. Wants to kill everything.

Incidents I don't remember the exact times to.

Freeport 14 supply event.
LWB/Synth Convoy event.
Ghosts murder everyone on Battleship Fes
Ame-chan acquires FuzzyThing
MonStar kills everyone
LNS Tundra
Liberty/Rheinland war begins
Malaclypse's Baffin Extravaganza

OORP incidents to remember.

BULLDOGnk getting banned
Virus and Phantoms putting Supernovas on Dragons
April Fools Pranks
The Great DDoS Siege of whatever year it was
The Nerfing of the New Berlin/Kyushu Diamond Run
Various Zoner Councils

Of course there's lots of others, but a list should be extablished for posterity's sake. We should remember some of the exciting times we had in times of yore.

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - sindroms - 01-02-2014

Holy shait, it is Iron!

Also, let us not forget the conn event, when we had to take out a lib dread with starflyers.

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - Kazinsal - 01-02-2014

Let us not forget the BAF-RM-Zoner standoff in Omega-3 in mid-4.85 that led to a battle in which no one was quite sure whose side they were on.

RE: The big Disco timeline database? - sindroms - 01-02-2014

What else.
Destruction of Toledo and Isis.

Outcast + Nomad connection.

Kusari Wilde.
