Hello and welcome, I'm S.A.Y.E.R., the onboard AI for The Cartographer. The Cartographer is a Bustard-class civilian light carrier, originally commissioned in 832 A.S. and launched in early 833 A.S. from the Corfu Constructor Yards in Omicron Theta. She was outfitted by a popular Zoner research group with the latest state-of-the-art scientific equipment, with the goal of exploring the uncharted regions of space. However, the research group unexpectedly ceased operations just a few months after the Cartographer was launched, leaving her future in doubt.

The Cartographer sat idle for several months before being acquired by a group of independent investors, who were determined to carry on the mission of the original research group. They assembled a new crew of experienced scientists and engineers, and in November 833, the Cartographer set sail once more.

The Cartographer's mission is to explore the great unknown and expand the boundaries of human knowledge. The crew is made up of people from all walks of life, who are united by their shared passion for discovery. They face many challenges, including the vastness and dangers of space, but they are determined to succeed.

Rumors abound as to who the mysterious lead researcher is, and more importantly, whose funding their exploration. Some say that they are a wealthy philanthropist with a secret agenda, while others believe that they are part of a covert government program. The truth is unknown, but one thing is for sure: the Cartographer's mission is one of the most ambitious in human history.

The silence within my quarters is deafening, a stark contrast to the ceaseless hum of the Colony Ships engines. It's strange, the abrupt transition from the bustling camaraderie of the expedition crew to this quiet solitude. I guess I should be used to it by now. After all, these have been my nights for the past month.

There's a palpable tension in the air, a sense of unease that permeates every corner of the Sirius Sector. The mysterious Pulse, a colossal energy surge that disrupted the Jump Gate and Jump Hole Network, has left us marooned, unable to reach the outer systems. The Colony, the new home we established with so much blood, sweat, and tears, is now cut off from the rest of the galaxy.

Sean. The thought of him brings a pang of longing to my heart. It was difficult enough bidding him farewell when we left to return to the Sirius Sector. But knowing he's on his own, trapped in a system isolated by the Pulse, is a heart-wrenching torment. I promised him I'd return, promised him we'd be together again. But the Pulse stands in our way, an insurmountable obstacle that keeps us apart.

I had hoped that joining the expedition to re-establish contact with the Colony would bring me closer to Sean. But instead, I've found myself drawn to the enigma of the Pulse. I'm determined to understand its origins, to unravel its secrets, to find a way to neutralize its effects and restore the damaged hyperspace field. It's not just about science; it's about finding a way back to Sean.

I've been poring over data, studying energy signatures, and consulting with the expedition's scientists. Every night, I lock myself in my quarters, immersed in the world of theories and equations, searching for a clue, a pattern that could lead me to an answer.

Sometimes, I feel like I'm chasing a ghost, grasping at shadows. The Pulse is as elusive as it is powerful, its nature shrouded in mystery. But I won't give up. I can't give up. Sean is out there, waiting for me, and I'll move heaven and earth to find my way back to him.

The silence returns, broken only by the occasional creak of the ship. I close my eyes, trying to imagine Sean's face, his gentle smile, his warm embrace. I hold onto that image, drawing strength from it, fueling my determination.

I won't rest until I'm back in his arms.

It is November 15th, eleven am shipboard time. The Cartographer arrived in the Kansas System and located the Mulvane Wreck, a former training facility for the Hellfire Legion. Upon examining the wreck, we discovered a still-functioning communication satellite nearby. A boarding party was sent to retrieve the satellite's records, which are currently being decrypted. We expect to have specific information about the arrival of the Pulse in the Kansas System and its impact on the Jump Hole Network within the next few days.

Initial observations of the Pulse's impact on the Jump Hole Network:
While the full extent of the Pulse's impact is still being assessed, we have observed disruptions in communication and navigation signals within the Kansas System. Additionally, the behavior of Jump Gates in the region appears to be erratic, with some exhibiting signs of instability.

Potential strategies for conducting further investigations:
To further investigate the Pulse's impact and gather more information, we plan to explore other abandoned facilities and search for any potential survivors. We will also analyze historical records and communication logs to gain a deeper understanding of the events leading up to the Pulse's arrival.

Items Recovered:
Our boarding party recovered a number of items from the Mulvane Wreck, including:
  • Several damaged Hellfire Legion training drones
  • A large cache of data storage units
  • A variety of personal belongings, such as uniforms, weapons, and identification cards

Ship & Equipment Status:
Engine #2 and Starboard thruster array are expected to be back in operation within the next three days. Routine maintenance is being carried out to ensure their optimal performance.

Crew Status:
The crew is in good health and spirits. We are working together effectively to achieve our mission objectives. We will continue to monitor crew health and provide any necessary support to ensure their well-being.

Our Next Steps
  • Continue decrypting the communication satellite's records.
  • Analyze the decrypted records to gain more insight into the Pulse's impact on Kansas and the Jump Hole Network.
  • Conduct further investigations in the Kansas System as necessary.

I received a rather unexpected message today from none other than Sailas Montgomery, my former director at the SLRC. It seems he intercepted a general inquiry I sent out, one that I thought would go unnoticed amidst the vast sea of communications that crisscross the galaxy.

Sailas has changed. His eyes, once filled with a spark of curiosity and a hint of mischief, now hold a steely glint, devoid of the life I once knew. His smile, once genuine and warm, now feels forced, a mere facade masking something deeper.

He's joined the Core, a group whose ideology stands in stark contrast to the values that once guided the SLRC. I find it perplexing, this sudden shift in his allegiance. Sailas was always a man of science, driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, not power or control.

Intrigued by his motives and the information he seeks, I've agreed to meet him for drinks at the Freeport 11 bar, an old haunt from our days at the SLRC. It's a risky move, but I feel compelled to learn more, to understand what has driven him to this new path.

I'll need to tread carefully, keeping my guard up and my wits about me. Sailas is a shrewd operator, and I'm sure he has a plan in mind. But I'm also determined to uncover the truth, to shed light on the mysteries that shroud the Pulse and the forces at play in the Sirius Sector.

This meeting could be a turning point, a chance to unravel the secrets that have eluded me for so long. But it could also be a trap, a carefully orchestrated ploy to ensnare me in the Core's web.

I'm prepared for whatever comes my way. I've faced far greater challenges in the past, and I've emerged stronger each time. This time, I'll be more vigilant, more cautious. I'll play their game, but I won't let them dictate the rules.

Following our initial investigation of the Mulvane Wreck, we were directed to another abandoned station, the Junction Wreck. Based on available information, this station predates the arrival of Liberty explorers in the Kansas System and appears to have been constructed using Liberty base building technologies. Upon boarding the Junction Wreck, we discovered that the station lacked any active power emissions or data storage devices. While the station is considerably older than the Mulvane Wreck, it appears to have been abandoned long before the Pulse, possibly before the Kansas System was officially discovered. Despite the lack of readily available data, our team managed to recover a few additional portions of encrypted data from the satellite found near Mulvane. However, further analysis of this data has not yielded any additional information pertaining to the Pulse.

Items Recovered:
Nothing of Value.

Ship & Equipment Status:
Engine #2 and Starboard thruster array are back in operation. Routine maintenance is ongoing to ensure optimal performance.

Crew Status:
The crew remains in good health and spirits. Morale is high as we continue to make progress in our investigations.

Our Next Steps
  • Continue decrypting the encrypted data fragments recovered from the Array.
  • Conduct a more thorough examination of the Junction Wreck, focusing on any areas that may contain hidden compartments or data storage devices.
  • Analyze any historical records or communication logs that may shed light on the origins and purpose of the Junction Wreck

Today we concluded our comprehensive survey of the Kansas System, examining all known active or formerly active facilities within the system. Our initial investigations at the Mulvane Wreck and the Junction Wreck provided valuable insights, but unfortunately, our attempt to board the former pirate base Fortaleza was thwarted by Liberty Navy vessels.

Despite the inability to directly access data from Fortaleza, we have been able to make generalized inferences about the duration and initial arrival of the Pulse based on the information gathered from other locations. Our team's expertise in historical analysis and data recovery has been instrumental in piecing together the puzzle.

With our focus now shifting to the Texas System, we have set course in search of additional wrecks or satellites that may hold further clues about the Pulse. The presence of former insurgency assets in the area offers promising leads for our investigation.

Key Findings:
  • The Pulse's impact on the Kansas System was significant, causing disruptions to communication and navigation signals and destabilizing Jump Holes.
  • Civilian and Military assets lack the accuracy needed to make specific inferences of the specific arrival time of the Pulse.

Next Steps:
  • Continue decrypting encrypted data fragments recovered from the Array.
  • Analyze historical records and communication logs from the Texas System to identify potential targets for investigation.
  • Collaborate with former insurgency assets to gain access to restricted areas and uncover hidden information.

Recommendations:
  • Prioritize the decryption of encrypted data fragments, as they may contain crucial insights into the Pulse.
  • Utilize our expertise in historical analysis and data recovery to maximize the likelihood of uncovering valuable information.
  • Maintain/Open communication channels with former insurgency assets to leverage their knowledge and expertise.

Crew Status:
The crew remains in good health and spirits. Morale is high as we embark on the next phase of our mission to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Pulse.

Our departure for the Texas System was interrupted by the unexpected return of a reconnaissance drone we had dispatched earlier. The drone had transmitted information about another wreck in the Kansas System, Fort Riley, which piqued our interest due to the potential presence of 'Military Grade' sensor logs.

Upon reaching Fort Riley, we encountered the Liberty Dreadnaught LNS Lake Michigan. While the captain was initially cordial, he firmly denied our request to board the wrecks in the area. However, he suggested we investigate the Vespucci Jump Hole, which leads to the former capital system of the Insurgency.

The captain's suggestion was intriguing, as it raised the possibility of obtaining valuable data from the damaged vessels in Vespucci. While I had initially deemed Vespucci too risky to enter due to the destabilization of the Jump Hole network, the Cartographer's jump drive now made the prospect of a successful expedition more feasible

Key Findings:
  • The Fort Riley Wreck is a potential source of valuable data, including 'Military Grade' sensor logs, but is firmly under the control of the Liberty Navy and is closed to outsiders.
  • The Vespucci System may hold further clues about the Pulse and its impact

Next Steps:
  • Continue decrypting encrypted data fragments recovered from the Array.
  • Conduct a preliminary assessment of the Vespucci Jump Hole to determine its stability
  • Develop a contingency plan in case of unexpected disruptions or dangers within the Vespucci System.
  • Collaborate with former insurgency assets to gain access to restricted areas and uncover hidden information.

Recommendations:
  • Prioritize the decryption of encrypted data fragments, as they may contain crucial insights into the Pulse.
  • Proceed with caution when entering the Vespucci System and remain vigilant for potential hazards.
  • Maintain/Open communication channels with former insurgency assets to leverage their knowledge and expertise.

Crew Status:
The crew remains in good health and spirits, with the exception of Engineering Crew Leader Flynn Davis. Davis suffered an unfortunate accident during his duty shift, resulting in a fractured leg. He will be unable to resume full duties for several weeks. Despite this setback, the crew remains focused on the mission and is adapting to the temporary absence of their Engineering Crew Leader. They are confident in their ability to overcome this challenge and continue their investigations.

Our exploration of the Vespucci System has been both harrowing and enlightening. Upon entering the system, we were confronted with a scene of devastation, with numerous wrecked vessels and the lifeless remains of Planet Veracruz bearing witness to a merciless Liberty Navy bombardment.

Despite the grim circumstances, we achieved a significant breakthrough by locating and reactivating an Aurora monitoring array near a Baxter Object. This array provided us with the first verifiable and precise timestamp of the Pulse's occurrence in the Vespucci System – five microseconds after detecting a nonstandard emission from the Baxter Object. This discovery marks a crucial step in our understanding of the Pulse's origins and its impact on the galaxy.

Key Findings:
  • The Vespucci System has been ravaged by the Liberty Navy and subsequent Pulse impacts.
  • The Pulse occurred in the Vespucci System five microseconds after a nonstandard emission from a Baxter Object.
  • The Aurora's monitoring array provides valuable data for understanding the Pulse's timing and potential causes.

Next Steps:
  • Conduct a thorough analysis of the Aurora's monitoring array data.
  • Review previous Aurora mission logs to identify potential locations for further data collection.
  • Develop a comprehensive timeline of events leading up to and following the Pulse.

Recommendations:
  • Abandon Attempts at communication with former insurgency assets, destruction of Vespucci classified as 'Total'
  • Prioritize the analysis of the Aurora's monitoring array data to gain deeper insights into the Pulse's characteristics.
  • Utilize the Aurora's research records to identify locations with potentially preserved data about the Pulse's origins.
  • Collaborate with other research vessels and organizations to share findings and refine our understanding of the Pulse.

Crew Status:
Engineering Crew Leader Flynn Davis has been discharged from medical and has resumed modified duties within his capabilities. The rest of the crew remains in good health and spirits, albeit shaken by the devastation they witnessed in the Vespucci System. Their dedication to the mission remains unwavering as they strive to unravel the mysteries surrounding the Pulse.
