Actually Role Playing - worldstrider - 06-01-2009 Someone just brought up a topic which was banned as it wasn't articulated very wisely...I'll quote them sans the expletive here. Quote: His topic was admin intervened for the colorful and negative phrasing but his point was lost I think. It seems to be a newer player and I think he is frustrated at how difficult it is to get positive interaction with his role play (hopefully he plays better than he posts). I do want to follow up on his post as he actually brings up a good point. In this week alone I have been pmed on forum by more than one person regarding my current RP (which is just actually starting--its been concept up to now). Things like: "I don't agree with it so I don't knoo-ooow..." "That's not how I see that developing." "Some of us were talking on skype and a lot of them don't think its a good idea." (*These are paraphrases of actual comments in-game and on forum.) Hmmm. I could say, "Well of course the community should have a say and I should listen to them" (I do actually) but there is another point...barring going off into completely counter-Disco realities (aliens with planet-killers, mind-controlling super-humans, supernatural deities, etc,) but that isn't my point. Role play is personal--meaning you create it and play it and then the response to it should determine if it "works"...and by "response" I mean in-game role play response. Some things might be addressed privately on the forum but as a rule and almost without exception, game play should approve or disapprove. Now here is what I see from many vets quite often (since I've been here) and this is an actual event: ME: "I am Tinkerbell, Ambassador." OTHER: "Ahoy Tinkerbell--who made you an ambassador?" [PM: //You know three official factions must recognize and you must post on forum or you aren't one. Name the three factions that approve you and I will interact.] ME: ... (actually I did carry on--but you get the idea) Other example as a Hogosha long ago: OTHER: What are you doing at the Leeds-Tau gate Hogosha? ME: Serving the Emporer by relieving these cursed Bretonian freighters of their war goods gaijin! OTHER: //You know this isn't your ZOI. Did you request to come here? Who approved it? Why a Hogosha? ME: ... This happens all the time. Would the real role players please stand up and quit playing in-game as moderators and actually play as players? This extends to the forums too. There is no need to dump a subjective opinion on someone as a judgment of their role play--comment yes, judge-demand, no ...and please, stop "//" me opinions in-game. What another person plays is mostly not our business--our responsibility is to rp a response to it. This isn't D&D and you aren't the GM. Actually Role Playing - Exile - 06-01-2009 You'll find that most of the 'moderator people' have only just arrived or lack certain aspects of their brain... The whole 'there's no RP!' situation is actualy not that bad. Over the past weeks I've practicly had nothing but. Sure, there might be more people who think like you but it's not all the fault of 'those noobs'. -PROPPER- RP comes from two sides. Always have, always will. Actually Role Playing - pchwang - 06-01-2009 Tinkerbell raises a good point, something that I have noticed too. The other day, I was pirated a trader with Zelot, and the trader did not RP with us at all. Instead, he simply chose to blurt out several lines of OOC in system, telling us that our IDs(Farmer's Alliance) did not allow us to pirate traders. Sure, I don't expect him to know every single detail on every single ID, but I did expect him to at least interact with us. Eventually, I allowed him to return and scan me again, and he found out that he was wrong, and very politely apologized. I pressed the issue, however, and asked him that he was using a sanction threat as a way of getting out of piracy instead of roleplaying the situation out. He simply replied that he needed to do whatever expedited his work(trading) most. Actually Role Playing - tazuras - 06-01-2009 The issue is, this is a cooperative RP environment, where different peoples 'personal RP's' interact, which makes them a little less personal. In disco, there is no dungeon master though, no one assigned to help every new player with their RP and make sure it is sensical, so players take on this responsibility. I think that everyone should finish RPing a situation before they get into the OORP commentary on another players RP. I myself have not done this in the past but I think I will from now on. Give it a chance, see if it makes sense, and if it doesnt, talk about it later once everyone has had their chance to fully play out their RP. If someone doesnt let you do this, ask them to. As for your first point about forum commenting, that ones easy, just explain your reasoning in every case, so as to give someone a chance to respond to your specific concerns. And if someone doesnt explain their specific reasoning why they dont like it then be specific about why it would work and ask their opinion on your reasoning. Actually Role Playing - Laowai - 06-01-2009 I whole heartedly endorse this thread, and quote myself from elsewhere: General advice: to the "moderators" "Shut the Hell up and play the game" [Admin]Laowai; Today. Actually Role Playing - Bjorn - 06-01-2009 This is something everyone should give a tought to. Actually Role Playing - Sarawr!? - 06-01-2009 ' Wrote:Someone just brought up a topic which was banned as it wasn't articulated very wisely...I'll quote them sans the expletive here. *stands up* /signs I agree completely with your statement, and really have nothing else to add to it on my own. Edit: Woops, I lied, I do have something to add. We don't create characters here on this server so that people can yell and scream at us, if somebody is actually Roleplaying outside of their ZoI (If it's not ridiculously far outside it) and not just lolwutting, then for God sake, actually try to RP back! instead of just harassing them via PM.. So again, I completely agree with Tinkerbell here. *slinks away and sits back down* Actually Role Playing - AJBeast - 06-01-2009 I must agree here. I too have been annoyed time and time again by these "moderators". Moderators which , most of the time , dont even have the vaguest idea of what they are talking about , at least , from my experience... On the other end of the spectrum though , some people seem to not know the diference between rules lawyering and simple advice. One time, quite a while back, i saw an allied ship , OORP on both ship and weapons. After a short RP I pmed him about his ship/ID. His response ? "I AM ****ING SICK OF EVERYONE RULES LAWYERING ME". Caps and all, yea... But yea , i think all these "moderators" should get themselves moderated... Actually Role Playing - Walker - 06-01-2009 Its the fact that most players regard themselves as the Messiah of Discovery, they know how to roleplay and around them are all these 'lolwutters' as we put them. They tend to regard the most everyone they meet as such... And some become too critical as in above. To say much, throw off ye godly cloaks and your golden staves and come down to earth to live as men. Actually Role Playing - hribek - 06-01-2009 Yes. On the other hand, if you do something like being out of Gallia with Gallic equipment mounted, you can expect to be spammed with ooc PMs. (better than not being told anything and just reported, but anyway, eew.) That's something completely different. So once more, I agree. |
