The Bullhead - Camtheman Of Freelancer4Ever - 10-11-2010

Since I dont want a mako (ugly as sin, stubby) And I'm beginning to get bored of all my ships, I figured just maybe ill try something new after I sell my Rhienland Turtle. So, Bullhead. How is it? What tactics do you use, what loadout. What for, really? Since the BHG Core ID is so restricted... How do you use yours?

The Bullhead - Blaze - 10-11-2010

Get a fighter or a gunboat it is much more fun. Trust me I have tried 4 Battleships and sold all of them and now I fly gunboats and fighters.. A lot more fun too

The Bullhead - SeaFalcon - 10-11-2010

Go for a thresher and you'll kill more if you fly it right.
Just takes a little longer.

Bullhead is rather cool looking, but thats me.
Pretty powerfull but dead meat against bombers.
Also the gunpoints are very easy to shoot off.
Use it for long range attacks.

And as a BHG you can do quite a lot of order hunting.
And when there are no order you can hunt NPC ossies.
But you have to keep yourself posted with the recent Order, zoner BHG events.

The Bullhead - Dashiell - 10-11-2010

Bullhead has quite a lot of pew onboard. but it turns like a freighttrain on a straight track and is dead meat vs bombers.

Some people like it, others hate it.

I had one, hated it, sold it.

maybe try open sp before blowing cash on a ship you'll hate in retrospect?

The Bullhead - n00bl3t - 10-11-2010

Thresher is better.

I fly both.

BHG BC loadout is 3 LM, 3 Pulse, rest primaries.

The Bullhead - Ceoran - 10-11-2010

I'd also agree that the Thresher is the better choice. Mainly because of the Bullheads turning as Dash explained.

The Bullhead - Agmen of Eladesor - 10-11-2010

Part of it depends on what you want to do with the ship.

As a support ship, the Bullhead is VERY nice.

2 LM's, 2 battleship Cerb turrets in the battleship slots, and then BHG Cruiser turrets in the rest. You can sit back and use your LM's, your Cerb's have very nice reach as well. But as the other guys said, it needs 40 acres to turn around.

But - it has a thruster, so you can whack npc Ossies with it quite nicely.

The Bullhead - sovereign - 10-12-2010

The Bullhead is a very nice artillery battery, but the Mako outclasses it as a "shock troop" (as much as the Mako can outclass anything, that is...). However, the Bullhead, as a BC, is vulnerable to enemy battleships that can draw a bead on it, and will likely have problems dealing with the heavier Geb as well, should you get in primary range. Lone cruisers, however, are easy prey for the Bullhead due to its thruster, substantial artillery capacity, and tankishness. In fleet engagements, a Bullhead should flit around primary range and blast away so long as it doesn't draw the attention of enemy battleships, retreating to an artillery role should it be threatened.

I don't think I've ever seen a Bullhead kill a bomber, nor does that surprise me. They can shrug off anything shy of a concentrated nova barrage in fleet battles, but they are ill-suited to actually killing smaller vessels.

Personally, however, I prefer the Thresher. The Thresher, while very light, is accordingly agile. A Thresher going fully evasive can be hard to hit with mini razors much less anything heavier (speaking from experience). It's small enough to take shelter behind the rocks in Omicron Minor, quite possibly making it the only capital ship capable of effectively pulling a "Mk I Keeper Shield" in the course of normal activity. It eats gunboats alive, and if properly managed can survive a Geb's charge for long enough to cruise away without taking serious damage. At light mortar range, it is nearly impossible to hit, and as snubcraft need to get very close to have a good chance of hitting, it is also capable of devastating bombers that are not exceptionally well trained.

However, the Thresher has two serious weaknesses. First, it is squishy. Very squishy. While pounding it is difficult, if someone starts beating on you, your hull will drop more quickly than you can say "Q_Q" (which is pretty damn fast in this community). The second is that as a very light cruiser, it has a matching powerplant. While easily capable of outpacing gunboats or bombers, you need to place your shots, and you cannot out-DPS any other cruiser. Most notably, you cannot out-DPS a Resheph, the one very deadly counter to the Thresher. Reshephs, while not as agile as the Thresher, can keep pace at sniping range and have just enough weight to them to win up close.

In summary;

The Bullhead is the heavy artillery that brings in a lot of damage no matter where it is. It can tank in cruiser engagements and DPS in battleship engagements, both very effectively. However, it is vulnerable to anything small enough to hit it without being hit itself, even if it can survive their pounding for quite some time.

The Thresher is the light cavalry that rides down enemy gunboats and pelts larger ships, while evading damage itself. It is very good at staying alive through agility, and very good at wasting enemy resources if they don't realize what's going on. However, it is fragile, and cannot stand toe-to-toe with any other capital ship and hope to succeed.

The Bullhead - pipboy - 10-12-2010

I'll tell you this from experience as well, as I have all three BHG caps.

The Thresher can get in close with enemy battleships and survive since it can out maneuver their primaries. A Bullhead cannot. If you get in close with an enemy battleship in a Bullhead, you're dead. For the most part I've found the Bullhead to be of little use in a fleet engagement. It's best used in a fleet engagement as a long range artillery platform. Or if the enemy isn't paying attention to you, feel free to get in close.

About loadouts, Lobster has it fairly correct. The thing I would disagree with is using BHG turrets over basic turrets. The BHG damage ratio sucks compared to basics. I use basics. And I use 2 battleship cerbs on the battleship slots in every loadout I have with it. Otherwise full cerbs for heavies, and full primaries for lighter use with 2 LMs is a great loadout.

Don't bother Blaze, Cam buys battleships. It's what he does. There is no changing that. Just go with the flow.
