I like to fly my barge. In this report :

I went from omega 7 to hamburg and back. I had good escorts, it was fun and hope to do it still at a later version of the mode.

with a 5k transport it is more easy to avoid interactions. If a pirate comes, i just dock at the nearest station. At the lanes it is usual a very good option with a 5k transport. With a barge you have a lot more RP forced upon you for your survival. You pay the escorts to shoot the pirates and in the meantime you try to survive. Barges are because of the low speed much more vulnerable for these kinds of interactions.

I use the jumpholes the most. The gates are in my eyes too much trouble to dock on with a barge, when i go in stuttgart to omega 7 or to any other system i have a huge chance to see pirate activity. Did you ever fly a barge? I am not talking about jumping here. If you TRY to use the jumpgate you are also an easy pray for the criminals. Not to even talk about the times you get stuck between between rocks.

To come to your question to use a 5k. I could, but i did prefer this way. If the escorts would all just used their 5k too, it would have been faster. But i do not mind, it was a lot of fun. At least people are escorted then, i never did see a 5k been escorted in all the time i am playing this game. In this case the barge is a big risk to just let yourself be shot. You need escorts to hire in order to prevent this possible outcome and get safely at your destination.

The main argument (or rather the only arguement) here is that the barge is being abused for jump trading and POB storage. As i said before, shrink the cargo size down less than a 5ker. It will literally fix the situation overnight.

Hell give it the new Nephilium model as well to go with the change so its not so bulky to fly anymore with it being less obsolete.

Yes, it'll end profitable jump trading and POB storage, but also leaves a ship that offers no benefit or utility with its slow cruise, inability to use lanes, etc.. Considering it's already been heavily nerfed, you might as well "delete" the barge and recycle the nickname for use on a new ship. Balancing any of these ship stats requires deciding on new values, editing several game files, and releasing a new patch for everyone to download - which also means subjecting other servers to the change.

Because they involve FLHook plugins (jumping and POBs), I've been trying to figure out solutions by modifying these instead of the base files, which will target only those issues directly and be less disruptive overall.

Also, a dev can chime in to verify, but I've heard using that Neph model presented a while back is no longer an option.

that's mean no barge for everyone right?

if it is the case, why not! i don't have one.

RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - .Gypsy. - 09-12-2014

Just my quick 2 cent's...

I don't think they hurt anything (and no I don't have one, never flown one) I think its always a bad idea to remove things from the game. Of course most people who don't have one will want them removed, but that's human nature. (If I can't have one, nobody can)

Barges are a unique ship in the game, would be a shame to see them go.

Edit: but if they are just gonna be nerfed to uselessness then just delete them.

RE: Discussion: Barge Removal - Sath - 09-12-2014

Would like to know what happens to them or the most possible thing to happen. Since, I have an ongoing (maybe) SRP for a barge, I have stopped it for the result of this thread, and want to continue it as per how the results turn out to be. (Would be nice if some dev notices this post :| )

And no, I am not saying don't remove them. All, or most of them I have seen just are there for making chunks of money without getting harmed and in the quickest way possible. But removing jumptrading with barges might be nerfing them to ground. Making it a more useful ship without jumping capabilities or into a completely new model for a different purpose might be the best outcome for everyone. Just sayin
