RE: Star Citizen - Did you pledge & what do you expect? - 13CentKiller - 05-15-2015 I pledged at the very beginning. Snapped up the unlimited insurance and other goodies such as the technical guide...etc 5+ years ago. I don't regret it, but I won't be playing until a proper release is available. In this fast paced throw-away digital world we have acclimatised to the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield amongst other games, being churned out yearly and patience has become a foreign concept. Good things take time! Admittedly, I felt a tad burned by Day Z as I expected it to take the same kind of time it might take to develop Battlefield. But it's far more complex with a much smaller team developing the concept. To their credit, both developers of SC and Day Z are staying in touch with their respective communities, even though a lot of haters stomp them in to the virtual mud. I personally disagree with user driven development for this very reason. Nobody knows what they want and they all complain at eachother in public. Star Citizen and Day Z are both breaking new ground in their own ways. I'm afraid good work just takes longer and everyone who waits will be rewarded for their patience later. We must not haste developers in to decisions they do not want to make or force decisions faster than they want to make them. The public suffers later for it. I have an Avenger and a Hornet F7C...and Beta Access, so I'll see y'all when the beta releases. I haven't done anything much with what's out right now. I mean, I did the tutorial and I thought it was pretty neat, and I've played around in Arena Commander, fighting NPCs and suffering from vertigo...but other than that, I'm waiting to really dig in. xD So in other words, I'll see y'all in the beta (Here's hoping there will be RP), or yanno, I could see you now, in game...playing FL. :o RE: Star Citizen - Did you pledge & what do you expect? - Adam_Spire - 07-08-2015 (01-29-2015, 02:22 PM)Narcotic Wrote:(01-29-2015, 03:40 AM)Sturm347 Wrote: What I'm actually afraid of is where would be the server based? would it be like multiple servers for different areas of the world like WoW? or just a single server ala disco to handle all of the players? This was one of the things Chris Robert's team was proud of. I watched a video where they talked about PVP instances. They have that main area were everyone is and when PVP starts, those players within the sphere of influence of the PVP are now in the PVP zone. The main area is informed that there is a zone setup and can enter or exit, but not return if they exit. Also, say the sphere has a cap of 20 ships, once the cap is reached, another PVP sphere is created. It spreads the load over servers on each sphere. What I thought was new, was if you're in PVP sphere 3, you can, if in range, see the events of PVP sphere 1 or 2 but not directly interact. That way you can reinforce that PVP sphere once your allies are killed. I am sure there is a ton more to it, but there is a lot of money already in this. Some people are putting way WAY too much into it and I am afraid, knowing Chris Roberts, he will effect the issue of diminishing returns. Chris' video of "They thought I was dead, they thought pc games were dead, but I'll showem." Gives you an idea of the man's Ego. On the other hand, he is responsible for making dam fantastic games....just horrid movies. I want SC to be amazing, but right now, I'm not putting a dime into this. The game's requirements are at the roof of my PC. I remember spending $75 for a 4MB SIMM chip in order to better play Wing Commander on a 386 CPU. Ah 12 Mhz. Best I can hear from the CIC wing Commander folks I keep in contact with and other forums, this is Wing Commander/Privater. There is no way to see this and not those universes. However because Origin gave the shaft to Chris...(.or visa versa? ) You will see Easter eggs from both games in Star Citizen aplenty. I'm just glad I can upgrade my video card and CPU...Oh I can see that being another $600.... RE: Star Citizen - Did you pledge & what do you expect? - Strichev - 07-14-2015 Apparently Derek Smart has something to say about Star Citizen. You guys might want to check the Zoner level drama that's unfolding. I see it as a clash of two inflated egos - just that one of them has a huge army of fans that do all the work for him. I almost agree with Derek (despite his obnoxious bragging about his previous games). We didn't ask for an all encompassing game in 2012. Just a good space sim in the spirit of FL and Wing Commander. In 2015 there is only Elite. By the looks of it the majority of people who played Freelancer since 2003 will never actually play Star citizen, as we'll be too damn old to have time for games. RE: Star Citizen - Did you pledge & what do you expect? - Nerva - 07-14-2015 For what I've seen so far that "Smart" guy is just an attention whore who failed his own project(s) and is sаlty someone else might succeed. It was a nice flamewar, though. Quite amusing. He looks like a bit of an attention whore tbh, trying to make the most possible drama out of some email. Very internet. Elite is utter garbage, it's a tech demo and it will for sure never be anything but that, with no content but some dumb grinds with no thought or purpose behind them. No interesting places to go, no interesting things to see or interesting people to meet. Just generic and bland nothingness - yes, not even that cool kind of space 'nothingness', because there's still randomly generated generic crap around. And not even varied crap, there's like a handful different space station designs and that's that - once you've seen those few, you've seen them all. Every storefront looks the same. Everything is the same. Suns comes in a variety of colors, not that many - once you've seen each one, everything will just be more copy paste. Each system have randomly generated factions fighting civil wars for reasons no one knows, all demanding you to do the same missions more or less. "Go there, kill that", "Take this, drop it off there", "Congratulations, you increased your faction standing" and on you go to the next piece of randomly generated generic universe to do the same thing again, unless you fall asleep first. I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to just copy/paste the same 30 different things in random configurations to infinity, but it's utterly ridiculous. Don't buy it. Not even for 10 dollars, you'll still end up disappointed after you've spent a few hours and seen everything there really is to see in this near-infinite universe. It will surely never be a "game", really. I even installed the new hyped 'Power Play' update, and all it was was more grinds and progression bars for factions you couldn't care less about. "You can influence and change the universe around you" - no, you can influence yet another stupid progress bar in your menu screen... A huge disappointment, and the worst part is that the dev acts as if they've completed the game and everything they add now are just extra presents because they are so kind-hearted. It's gross, and generally a lot of crowdfunded projects have a habit of becoming a bit cult-like with a die-hard clique of fanboys cheering at everything that gets thrown at them, even when it's turds. Both RSI and Frontier exploit this total lack of judgement to the extreme, and it's difficult to really get behind even if you want to. On paper 'crowdfunding ideals' sound so great though. At least there's a chance Star Citizen might become something (I bought both, and I thoroughly regret Elite, while there's still some excitement regarding what might come in SC). ---------------------------- For all its shortcomings, it's really showing how great a game Freelancer is/was. Gripping atmosphere, thrilling story and a universe and characters you actually cared about. Fun combat and PVP as well, more so than some newer games even if less complex. Should have spent the money on Disco rather than Elite |
