Completely agreed on this one. Somewhere around 4.85 should be the best bet, wherein it was easy to travel home spaces of casts, order and sairs.

This may be a stupid idea, but why do jump holes have to lead only to systems next door? I mean they are rips in space after all. Why not have a few "Super Jump Holes" that could maybe look different or bigger that connect far areas together? that would in theory make the universe "smaller" so to speak?

The reason why we can't delete some (buffer) systems is because there's a possibility of wiping out player ships in that system. Or at least that was what I was told.
But you've got to break a few eggs to make an omlete, right? People could be warned beforehand that the system was getting deleted and they could move their ships out.

Sound the alarm for over a weak or two like "We gona delet this system. GET OUT!!"

I'll let someone more knowledgeable step in if I don't know what I'm talking about, but aren't there already one-way jump holes in some places? Leave the bases behind until the update after next (since there's a chance it'll be 6 months in between), notify anyone currently docked to exit via the hole, then empty out the systems in the same fashion as Yukon and others.

Why don't we just continue the natural trend and, following a voluntary player wipe, perform a true character wipe. Along with system deletions and all that goes with it?

That's a terrible idea. People aren't going to be motivated to log at all if they've lost everything they own.

With sufficient changes to the universe (redrawn system layout, streamlined economy and things like that) it might work.

MAY 2014 - THE GREAT PURGE OF DISCO
MAY 2014 - THE DEATH OF DISCO

these two are synonymous

RE: How can we save this mod? - Jose Benitez - 05-04-2014

Would there be any value in deciding what the good things are about Disco before everyone expresses an opinion on what they think is bad?

I haven't played "properly" in some while so am not in the best of positions to comment but reading through the last however many pages it is, no one (that I noticed) talks about the good stuff. Everyone has a view (usually different) on what they don't like, but what is it that you do all like?

If you really want to generate some interest and effectively think about re-launching Disco then consider the mods strengths.

Create a list of those strengths and then look at whatever is left over and decide to keep it or not.

For me one of the strengths of the Disco mod was the in game and forum RP. I'm far too old to be a PvP god and truthfully have no real interest in putting in the hours of practice to get much better than I already am (which is pretty poor as I am sure some of you will remember! Tongue ), so the game for me was much more about the RP interactions.

So in answer to my own question I'd propose putting the RP on the strengths side, and suggest that the PvP is actually not that important to the "game". There are loads and loads of far better shooting games out there.

I can't speak for all of the Benitez, but I know that a number of us left FL because of the emphasis that was put on PvP. The lurch (in my opinion) that the mod has taken in recent updates toward a more PvP centric game is what ultimately caused me to park my Titan. The relaxing of the ID/IFF requirements, and availability of technologies was another reason I don't play much nowadays.

The requirement where the ID had to match the IFF and equipment meant that new players understood what their basic role was. Unless things have changed it became far too complicated for a new player.

I'd also like to add that the return for the amount of effort that Official factions put in was next to nothing - at least that I ever noticed when running Benitez, and that is a contributing reason to the reduction in Official activity.

Anyway feel free to agree or disagree, I have only offered this small insight into how I saw/see Disco because I do think it would be a shame to see it die so long as there are people prepared to put the effort into keeping it going.

Good luck - I hope you succeed.

Jose

PS I'd also like to add that despite the suggestions that I have recently heard that Benitez is "dead" I'm pleased to say that we are not... We simply play together at other games, and periodically organise for as many of us as possible to meet up and drink beer. That would not of been possible without us all meeting here. Smile
