RE: How can we save this mod? - Cryptor - 05-06-2014 Don't know if discovery needs or deserves to be "saved". Most of the people who posted leaving threads are still and will still be around. But anyway... there are a lot of well known and pretty uncontested things about the mod that could be improved to make it more fun again. God knows why it hasnt been fixed 3 years ago, some of it is rather simple. What devs can do: -Make travelling in the omicrons faster. It became obvious to everyone that this had to be done like 3 months into 4.86. So many easy ways to do it. Displace jumpholes to put them closer together. All you need to do to displace a jumphole is... change 2 numbers? Or delete/move zeta and plug the other jumpholes together. Or just get the 4.85 systems back instead. Or add 2 or 3 more jumps as shortcuts in the omicrons. So many ways to do it, easy, hardly any work required. But... nothing is done, to fix this problem that EVERYONE agrees on. For over 3 frickin years. -Change the jumps between Tau 37 and Alpha to how they were. Or move jumpholes closer together in that intermediate system. -Make Alpha and Gamma be closer together again. Outcasts and Corsairs were separated through a distance that Corsairs crossed with frickin shuttles out of the Hispania, 800 years ago. All of these 3 first point things can be easily changed by just changing jumphole connections. You wouldnt have to change or delete any of your precious dev work, you can keep every system in the mod, just dont force people to travel through all of htem to move between vanilla systems. -Nerf a whole bunch of trade routes, so others are concentrate on, so trader becomes more predictable, and pirates can pirate again. -Remove battleship and spyglass scanners. Try hard to make larger ships (caps+transports) appear on scanners at longer ranges than small ships. This will solve a lot of issues concerning capspam and piracy. -make it so that people cant cloak while jumping to flee -make it so that fighters cant be unhittable by other fighters, by buffing all fighter gun speeds. Unkillable ships lead to trolling, endless fights, and frustration. What the "community" can do: -L33t official discovets, stop doing your best to destroy every new and active player group that pops up. Do your best to encourage them to join your faction instead, through positive incentives, not negative ones. If they dont want to join you, live and let live. -L33t official discovets, stop raising the expectation within yourself and within others that you shouldnt get shot unless you want to, by exactly what ships you want to, after being talked to exactly the way you want to. Stop this idiotic immersion-killing oorp-rudge generating "I went to your base/fleet and now you're attacking me with supperior ship/numbers so you're an evil player so I must now be I a prick towards you and tell others you're a prick". Start expecting to get shot by every enemy you see, and you will actually end up getting "ganked" less because YOU are the one provoking these situations expecting that other people wont do it if you parade in front of them. People in disco will be pissed off less if you stop provoking situations where the natural repsonse is going to piss you off, and your complaining about it is going to piss people off. -Factions and official factions, you should be the perfect people to get new players involved in disco, to help them, teach them, motivate them, get them to interact with people, to get them involved. You'd also benefit for numbers, activity, and "power" over people to make them obey you, which some of you seem to crave so much. You're totally missing out in it. Recruit noobs, even before they joined he forums, as many as you can, offer them a chareer, a hierarchy to climb up, teach them to PvP in fighters, to work as a team, to participate in organized activities in a somewhat organized manner. Instead, official factions make themselves innaccessible to noobs by demanding that people be on skype, demanding that they know everything BEFORE joining. -rename "Angels" to "Server-Helpdesk" so people actually know who to ask just by looking at the name. What admins can do: -Less restarts. They let new people "explore" by just typing stuff, without building ships and characters. That doesnt promote activity. People will tend to stay if they think they have built something, formed a character, accomplished something. Same will motivate to explore and "play" like intended. If they can already see everything and quickly get things without having to work for it, everything will also seem more worthless. -A change in how activity, RP, skypecontacts, and officialdom are rewarded/promoted. The way official faction leadership is handed out in discovery from one buddy to the next buddy doenst promote activity or RP, but hogging of officialdom to keep influence in a game that you rarely even play anymore. Player groups should be able to gain officialdom or the powers associated with it based on their activity and their conforming to RP standards, not on whether they managed to befriend the guy who only lets his buddies into his faction. I thought up this little scheme how that could work, and also promote RP generally on the server: Role Play and Activity Promotion Scheme: Similarly to the tech compat/nerf, there will be some gear (like gunboats or larger, transorts with more than 4000 cargo, and armor upgrade 8) that will only be "unlocked" (meaning you dont get a power core nerf, and when you do you get the message "Post role play information about yoru ship on discoverygc/threadname to unlock the items in your inventory) if you have a certain mountable item. This item will not be sold in the game, but has to be put there by an admin. We can call the item "Role Play Token". The role play token will be given when the player conforms to a minimum of simple and easy RP standards: He must make a forum post that gives name, gender, species, nationality, of the character/crew, brief history of the character, and he must answer the question if he read the forum rules by yes and post the link to show he at least knows where they are. The procedure should be very simple and very easy to get approved, by simple objective criteria: Does the guy know enough english to RP, doesn he seem to know what RP is, did he read the rules. Things like "this is stupid" or "this is brilliant" wont matter here, like for a SRP. And admin should just check if the basic criteria are met, and then type ".approve Shipname" to give the item that unlocks the higher gear. It should really only concern the "highest" gear, so it doesnt scare off people at an early stage of their playing here when dont have much playtime invested yet, and so its not actually necessary to do this for every single character that one has. If one char flies several ships, (like same pilots flies bomber, VHF, and LF), or someone would like to request the thing for several ships in one post, that could get approved in one batch as long as all the information is provided. Now, to promote/reward activity and co-operation, every faction that has a tag, a certain amount of activity on RP-token approved ships, and who requests it, will get limited official faction rights. If there is discord about something like creation of house laws, there will be a vote among the factions with those rights, and each vote will be weighed by the amount of activity each faction had in the last 2 months. This will motivate factions who desire official say to behave positively towards other players, so that they will join them and be active. One may say that a large clique of players could form an official faction in every faction and dominate everything to the point of abuse. Well, they'd also have to be active in all of those factions, which they cant be at the same time. And its not like the same people in multiple official factions arent doing that already. You could introduce a rule like "you cant be in 2 official faction at the smae time, trying to be in several would result in deletion of the ship your requested the token for". But I think this new system is less vulnerable towards abuse than the current one, while encouraging RP and organization for a larger target audience of players. If you dont like the part about official factions, you should still consider the approval of higher gear by showing you know what RP and rules are. "The final nail" "Disco is ending" NO What is Disco? Think about it, what is this server that admins, devs, ship makers and other people work to keep it going, with new ideas, the role play ideas, etc Just look back on how things have gone on Rheinland v liberty Kusari with Bretonia The people that played and fought, on all sides, over the years Think about the history of why we are here and love coming back, If you think this game/mod is dead that because it's ONLY dead in your heart and mind YOU have the power to keep it going YOU have the power to show people To teach people, to have fun in this game Its YOUR attitude that will make this mod keep going, remember that I for one, will always keep going RE: How can we save this mod? - Juzt156 - 05-10-2014 As a player who has quit twice and come back both times, I think I should probably comment as one of the major issues here is player retention. The two reasons I left the frist time. 1. My favourite faction started to fall apart and die. (VE) I was left in charge of it, not because I had any experince at running a faction, but because I was the most active. We had no enemies plenty of allies and no enemies. Phantoms were dead and burried before I even joined, then it was us against Gallia and defending Zoners. Well Gallian factions were not intrested in us so the broadly ignored us, and the Zoners had better supported factions on their side. 2. PVP is not a lot of fun when you suck at it. (I realise nothing can be done about how bad I am at it) Plus if you have no natural talent people tend to give up on teaching you. 3. Most of my friends left. So I was gone in a year or so. The second time around. 1. Apart from CR, there were no factions I wanted to join. Playing on your own is boring, whether pirating, pewing, smuggling or trading. 2. There were very few big battles happening. 3. I am really slow at typing and people tended to destroy me before I said anything. However, something about this place brings me back. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment. However, I loved the original game, I still play through it occationaly. So the opportunity to play a new version of it, with more freedom, and RP so I could do anything that was a tremendous thought. Plus, I am tight and all it cost was installing an old game I already owned RE: How can we save this mod? - stardust47 - 05-10-2014 I've been here for a long time, since shortly before 4.85. These 'Disco is Dying' threads are old news to me. Just play the game, alright? Try telling your friends or whatever about it. A lot of this crap is our own fault. Then again, there are serious issues with the mod and the community that need to be fixed. RE: How can we save this mod? - Scumbag - 05-10-2014 First things first: Community Rules 1.Not allowed on Discovery forums or server: 1.1 Use of abusive, vulgar, obscene or racist materials 1.2 Trolling or harassing other members of the community 1.3 Advertising, especially commercial advertising, except advertising your own gaming websites or servers 1.4 Adult content or links to it; This also includes any anime that is in any way graphic or pornographic 1.5 Libel, defamatory, threatening materials and any law-violating materials 1.6 Use of copyrighted material without the owner's permission These are all the rules you need. Everything else has hurt the community more then helped. I'll post more about how to change the mod for roleplay aspects when i go home. RE: How can we save this mod? - HassLHoFF™ - 05-10-2014 A lot more advertisement and administration at moddb is important... |
