Quite naturally real material takes color tint from ambient light. Material parameters specify the amount color the surface receives from the ambient light(s). For example in Omicron Alpha it'll be more green-ish due to the green ambient light of the sun. The screenshots above were taken in NY, and the sun there has slight blue ambient tint. This ship uses standard material library, no need for custom textures or even materials when adding ship to existing ship line design patterns, just some good old unwrapping, slicing surfaces and patching textures over it, techniques similar to those generally used when texturing large polygonal environmental areas, level design specifically.
