That which was dead for good reason should not have been exhumed.

Edit: To elaborate further now that I've had a chance to sit and think after finishing my errands, the name is tainted by very strong associations. If you change anything that was problematic in the old days, they're no longer really the Phantoms.

Use the tech, fine. Use the bases, I don't much care. But if you're not going to be playing old-school Phantoms, don't use the name - and if you are, just don't.

RE: Admin Notice: Phantoms 2.0 - djordje_petrovic - 02-02-2014

There are many comments and posts but verz few concrete suggestions.

As i noticed, many people understand phantoms as they are - unpredictable terrorists who pop and pew. And for true to take that away would be great setback.

We have xeno isolationists. But phantoms should have some greater agenda defined by lore. I will not discuss that lore , but i would point in RP behaviour of such organisation.

That ID should be on apply only. No phantom indies.
One more thing. Their action and ZOI could be defined via some kind of RP radiant event. So technically free to go elsewhere but they shouldnt engage ships on isolated basis incidents scatteres in space.

If official phantoms announce some operations in tau sectors because of some RP reason , then their ZOI is defined by time elapsed RP event which is initiated on forum by them or someone other.
That would make phantoms more concentrated in groups and to specific assigments and zones of operations.

I think 2 things are important.

1. Phantoms retain their agressive , stealthy , mysterious nature.
2. To define their actions with RP occurences via official faction.
2a Tagged PHantom ships cant operate in different (distant) parts of universe in same playtime.
2b Can engage ship on sight , but in boundaries of designated RP
2c Without proper RP background event or occasion, phantom vessels should not be used, or be passive.

So in whole , let we remake those terrorists again but tie them to local RP events. When tere is reason to occure they will emerge . When no reason they will be dormant.

Only to prove that no matter what is done, even if it's something like making Phantom tech and asset available again, which was requested over and over and over and over again, people would still find something to complain about and flood the forums with 1-liners of "Worst decision ever. Why you did this?!"

You're welcome.

You know that there was a way better approach to bring this change in. Or not?

RE: Admin Notice: Phantoms 2.0 - Huhuh - 02-02-2014

Did the right people finally ask to be phantoms?

Countless threads were locked saying PHOOMS NEVAR COMIN BACK! Yet here they are. It was a crappy faction the last time around with lore imports and OP ships; why would you even try to save that?

RE: Admin Notice: Phantoms 2.0 - |nfrared - 02-02-2014

Just because it was messed up the first time doesn't mean someone with some fresh ideas couldn't fix it. The problem with original Phantoms is that their lore was so shallow that any splashing around instantly revealed huge holes and unexplainable gaps in exchange for overpowered pew. What is needed is a fresh approach with some original lore that wasn't slapped together in under 5 minutes for a l33t pewpew faction.

This faction could be great. But the trouble is that it is tainted by past events. It needs something completely fresh.

And my thought of the new admin team reveals - "Disco will be ruin with this Admin Team. Missed the old guys."

RE: Admin Notice: Phantoms 2.0 - Mímir - 02-02-2014

Meh if they're gonna nerf it I can imagine you can do the same things on an Outcast ID. I fail to see what "awesomeness" Phantoms could bring - you can easily make a terrorist group based off of Outcast lore and ID but nobody did it because in reality the idea is pretty meh and you'll end up with everyone disliking you.

I only ran into "real" Phantoms once during my stay here, I wanted to get close so I could see a funky new ship I hadn't seen before and the guy killed me without a word. Not impressed. Not "scared" either.

Disco doesn't have room for these super-pvp factions anymore because quite frankly the idea that some players were capable of wielding that kind of power responsibly has been completely debunked over the last few years.

We'll either get toothless Phantoms that you could play (better, IMO) on an Outcast ID, or non-nerfed Phantoms that cause lots of super retarded discussions regarding "superior RP" as a justification for having an ID that allows engagement without any significant roleplay.

Lolnope.

Instead of making new terrible decisions, and asking for our input which is then ignored when it doesn't align with what you wanted to hear, how about looking at reversing some decisions that we tried to veto when you proposed them?

I find myself, as a veteran player, feeling ever more alienated from the ever-changing 'now' of disco. Phantoms remade, with new name and RP? I suggest the pantomimes. Terrifying space clowns. Guess which hand has the coin, or die.

Smuggling factions don't work - the benitez's demise as an official faction proves this. Vet's coming out to 'complain'? Some of us here have been stalwarts of this server for longer than the current crop of admins. Hell, some of us oldies WERE Admins.

Things die for a reason. The essential circle of life, etc. By all means, repurpose their ships and bases, but creating new activity diluters is as bad as inventing a new house and then pointing all the trade routes there, as bad as creating, cloaks and jump drives, insanely high range scanners and other lag-inducing features without upgrading the servers connection to the web.

Should we all just roll over and play star citizen instead?

Edit: I have buyers remorse about my tablet phone

Perhaps lock the phantom threads? The discussion is a bit pointless now.
