I think I'll have to /signed with Dusty on this one. While the "Kick for too much cargo" function would be a way to reduce abuse, it would not prevent abuse.

Logistically, I'm not sure how this would work, as I'm not sure what type of variable is used to store the amount of space a commodity takes. If it's a float, which would be less efficient, your idea would work on the items that already take more than 1 unit.

If it's an integer, however, we would have to redo the cargo scale completely for the bonuses to take effect. Items that take 1 unit now would need to be bumped up to 4 units, meaning everything cargo related would need to be multiplied by 4 to compensate.

Doing this runs into another potential problem: If the variable type is an integer, what size integer is used? 16 bit? 32 bit? 64 bit? (okay, probably not 64 bit...) If it's a 16-bit integer variable, that leaves us with a maximum value of 65535 units of cargo space. What happens to the Barge when this happens? Suddenly we're looking at some 160,000 potential units of cargo space. This would overflow the size limit very quickly. Not to mention the potential abuse that could be attempted by those (un)lucky enough to have the ship.

Long story short, without knowing the limitations of the engine, and knowing the potential for abuse this idea has, I don't think it's a workable idea.

OMG how?
You asked how junkers make money. Heres how I do make money on my junker:

Get your Salvager with 2 mining turrets in NB at Kreuzberg (or whatever debris field you like), load your hold with rusty junks and cruise your engines to Alpha/Gamma, sell the junk on the shipyards, voila 10-12 mils per route.

Note: A route takes aprox. 10 min and mining aprox. 2 mins
Note: The Salvager its a lovely ship. It can be used for many purposes. Scrap mining its just one of them so dont wonder why it is so expensive.

Also, slave/cardi route its a good profit smuggling route. You can try that too if you say junkers are not as rich as other factions. (umm,yea, perhaps this is true:lol:)

@Knucklehead
I've seen other mods implement a system where commodities take up a fraction of one cargo unit, so it's doable for sure. I can't say how hard it would be to do though.

As far as the potential for abuse, I can't seem to think of a situation where it could be severely abused. If I understand it right, the idea is to make currently weak commodities such as water or oxygen take up less cargo space for certain ID's - first of all, the cargo multiplier would have to be capped so that the cr/sec for any commodity doesn't exceed the best current routes. Let's assume we have a 200 cr/sec cap (I'm pulling this off the top of my head), and suppose that the best trade run for water currently makes 70 cr/sec (all assuming a 5k transport). Then the cargo multiplier "n" would be

n =< 200/70 = 2 (rounded down)

As long as the ID-boosted runs don't make any more than current routes we shouldn't have a problem. The two possible methods of abuse that have been brought up are

Players buying lots of cargo and giving it to their buddies -- to be honest, I can't see an issue here.

Players swapping ID's constantly -- we have to keep in mind that ID's are well scattered across bases and it isn't clear whether running around changing your ID all the time would be time efficient. Of course, it's almost impossible to say without actually testing it out with concrete examples.

Incorrect sah!

A third model for potential issue has been brought to the table. Best identified as the huge post made by myself. Though it would be easy to miss admidst the various /signed (78?) and WHY ISN'T THIS IN YET!!!??!111!!?

Neither swapping IDs nor changing IDs would have any affect on a model which allowed you to purchase additional commodities. The issue is with the system itself. Chiefly in regards to governing overall profit by limiting volume.

If you can carry twice the capacity of cargo, though your initial investment is twice the normal rate (thereby working around my cardinal rule of exploitation, cost versus reward) your return profits are doubled as well.

What this can do, other than presenting a number of balancing concerns in its own right, is accidentally create micro uberroutes.

Say a 60 second cruise trip brings in a meager 70 c/sec on your cargo. Just a quick hop between two stations in the same system.

But now you can double your payload. Which, for all intents and purposes, doubles the amount you're making. Suddenly a completely safe baby bridge run between two points, chiefly intended to provide a measure of return while moving between a primary consumption and production point, becomes a viable trade route.

It would take a great deal of effort to identify and eliminate all of these potentials.

To which end I suggest that, while I'm sure Xoria would be interested in observing your proposal, the practicality and reward of it might fall short of the minimums demanded to render it worth the time required to manifest it.

I hope this won't end up like last week...

Damn...I didn't think of that XD

I checked FLComp and yeah, water from Freeport 4 would be selling like girl scout cookies. To be fair though - there's already many short routes (1-3 minutes) with high cr/sec.

Either way, this is a big undertaking and it doesn't sound like anyone is willing to actually do the grunt work....I'd consider trying it but I'm lazy *shrugs*

Perhaps after 4.86 is in, and the bugs have been worked out - people wouldnt have time to do anything else right now but get the mod finished.

And when I get an indication people are free again, I shall be pushing for the bones of POS.
