Another notch on the stupid idea belt for this admin team. Gheis really did pour bleach in the admin water pit before he left.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when we put all the ideas that have been presented about this together.

RE: Admin Notice: Phantoms 2.0 - Curios - 02-03-2014

My 2 cents.

I think dropping the "Phantom" name is a little too much, but lore and other stuff needs a real rework if you're actually going to pull this out as a playable faction once again. Really. As Virus said (and others) the original Phoom lore is not really fitting into the current state of disco to say the least.

The things have changed and the phantom lore needs some adjustment to be even playable in the first place. However there is a problem with keeping a cool word as a faction's name because if we're going to keep the phantom old lore and rp as things that took place on the server with reflection on people's RPs and then to rework them completely with new lore we'll have to go all the way to connect the ends of old lore and new lore into some logical background. Which sounds really doubtful for me.

I would still suggest keeping SOME of the aspects that made the phantoms Phantoms.

Invite only.
OP gear.
Limited members (5 or so).
Terrorist ID.
PVP focused gameplay.

And I am pretty sure, I am inexperienced to give my opinion here as I have no idea about them and consequences that have led to such negativity to their revival.

But as a curious guy, I would love to see them in space.

Of course, Nothing should I recommend for ships, balances and other issues, because I don't know what was there and what had happened Smile

Here's how it 'worked':

Someone with friends in high places would fly around in an OP ship, creating slightly OORP ingame pew groups with lesser players. They'd run around blasting things.

From the perspective of the newer players it was: "Oh no, Phantoms! Run for your lives!"

From a good pvper it was: "DIS GUN BE GOOD"

For anyone else it was: "Oh these guys again..."

From the perspective of the Phantoms it was: "LNS CAP AT THE JUMPGATE, BLAST IT"

Any 'RP atmosphere' was a fluke and certainly not due to the Phantom players putting in any effort.

The hillbilly version of the Phantoms was the Torpedoes.

I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or not.

The Torps did not have as much as an impact on Liberty as Phantoms did at the time, but again, as it was already stated, large pirate squads rolling everything in sight in front of Manhattan was something unheard of back then.

That's why they call me the Tricksy Banterman.

Ok, the social experiment jokes aside (Kudos to you Sir Dusty, too clever an insult), time for a serious reply:

We admit that this announcement could've been worded better to avoid all this confusion, as bringing back the old Phantoms as they were or allowing the continuation of the same faction or concept was not and is not the team's intention. We're glad to see all these old players dropping by to say hi, and there's no argue that we wish it was under different circumstances, but still, we'd like to apologize for the discomfort digging your way out of your graves to come voice your concern due to this misunderstanding might have caused you.

We've respected the original group's request when they stated they do not want to see the concept they created used on this server again, which is why any attempt at reviving the group was shot down immediately, and even with this notice, that is not what's going to happen either. This announcement merely serves as a notice to let the community know that assets belonging to the old group known as "Phantoms" is now available to be reused for a new concept which should have nothing to do with the old group or use any of their roleplay or lore (unless with permission from the original creators, which appears to be not the case here), and that the staff are open to ideas from anyone who may have interest or fresh thoughts on the subject.

As already stated in the original post, we're not intending to bring the "Phantoms" back, or remake them as a closed terrorist group and the name is only used to let the community know which faction assets is the subject of this announcement, but furthermore, we will no longer be instantly denying any faction concept or attempt that may involve technology or assets currently labeled as "Phantoms" ingame, and unlike what some people have been claiming merely to heat things up a bit, using the roleplay material belonging to someone else without their permission has never been and will never be allowed, and the subject is not even remotely related to intents of this announcement.

So why not give the ships back to the factions that originally had them? I remember quite a few people being very unhappy when they lost their toys due to the Phantoms taking them.

Who never used them anyway.
