I find it odd, that when people dont like the trade system, and say so, they get told to not trade. All forms of money require some tradeing, Mineing included. Cargo piracy included, Regular piracy indirectly, etc.

Discovery Economy Reformation - Leo - 04-03-2010

I know, Els, I'm seeing that too. Everything that makes money on this server (baring missions) requires some form of trading. Some are longer than others, some go through Guard systems (made that mistake once with a Firefly ><), but over all, everything on the server, again, baring missions, requires trading.

I'll state it again, the POS system that Friday suggested seems to be the best bet to spruce up trading via FLHook, so long as it doesn't get it's face nerfed off like the mining mod did.

Oh, and Regular piracy does require trading if they steal the cargo from them like I do with my pirate transport. Because then you've gotta take it back and trade it to the station for credits, so...

I did read the whole thread in one sit. That made me comment. First of all, I agree that trading is boring. Mining is boring too. That far my agreement with the majority goes.

I say pirating is boring too. What's more, any activity you do purely to generate money will be boring. If disco incomes would be miraculously doubled, what would happen? You'd be bored for half the time. A lot better?

Any game what makes you to monotonously grind is boring. Why would anyone play a game like that? Grab an FPS, go online, shoot the people with the gun you just found. The grind-to-get-better type of RPGs grew old since Diablo. So why anyone plays one? For the good story? Or a well thought universe with fun ideas? Or to get lvl80 and have the PWN-DPS spell and the biggest sword?

As someone who grew up on pen-and-paper roleplaying I felt myself offended when Diablo was named 'RPG'. They missed the whole point. They cropped the mechanical parts of a miracle began with D&D, and people started to forget what it was in the first place. I was desperate that roleplaying will disappear in the favor of grinding and pre-written stories. And than I found Discovery. And I was relived. What? A PC game where people are 'forced' to play their role? Bliss and heaven. So I enjoy it. Since my first Rhino.

So here's a suggestion to improve your Discovery experience - for everyone. When you got bored and you want to make a new character, answer these questions -before- thinking about what ship he'll have. You don't have to write it down, just think a lot on every question befor moving to the next. Think with your characters head. If you do it patiently I bet you'll have a char who never gets you bored. Ever. I promise.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong about this, I LOVE playing my Junker. Some of you have probably heard him ranting at the police and telling the Rheinlanders to stop sneezing when they speak in German when chasing him. All the while being chased down when carrying contraband. (SS.Joyride). That part is fun for me. I do enjoy smuggling. Just when I get to the end destination is what kills it all for me.

15 minutes of work for 10 million credits. It makes me cry a bit inside.

I don't think anyone is saying they want a 100-200 million per hour trading run, we just want something to spruce it up. The POS system looks good, but that doesn't make the trading ITSELF more fun. Maybe if pirates had a certain ID, like Molly's for example, if they blow up a miner stealing their ore they get a certain bonus to what drops, or they get more ore.

Same goes with traders, if an Ageira transport is moving trade lane parts (just an example) and a Hacker comes upon them and demands them, the trader refuses and the Hacker pops the transport, they get a bonus to the amount that drops from the destroyed ship.

Just an idea.

Id vote for player based dynamic economy based on market style updates:)

Discovery Economy Reformation - Evan_ - 04-03-2010

All right, let me rephrase. Don't trade because you need money. It will be a chore. Trade if your character needs money.

Take me for example. I have two chars at the moment. One of them has about 12 ships, not counting the shared ones he has access. For a lot of months I had a place to spend the money. I never felt I'd have to do it faster. And now that he does not feels to have more, the cash is just piling. If he'll get an idea that requires a different ship, he'll buy it. If he wont have enough money he'll work a bit more. Or wait.

The other one is a bum. He's happy if he gets his hand on a couple of TCDs.

The issue is, I -have- to trade to keep the bank afloat. And, TBH, Being bored half is much is a whole lot better. But More RP wont fund new guys, will it? Thats my main issue.

EDIT: If my loan scheme gets off the ground though.....the sky's the limit.

Discovery Economy Reformation - tyro - 04-03-2010

it depends on people, one likes trading (like me) another hates it.
my son plays disco sometimes (not here, but on fun server), he has problem because of he needs money, but he hates trading. he said exactly the same like someone here above: F2, F2, F2, F3 is terribly boring. he asks me to play on his server to make some money for him.
I told him - do missions, but missions are not profitable. you cannot earn money to buy new ship.
so, maybe we should raise missions rewards 10 times on eg.

Discovery Economy Reformation - hribek - 04-03-2010

Or maybe the mission system needs a lot of work in general. Anyone who wants it to happen, try to make it happen. It is on my "to do" list, but that particular list is very long. It's nice to wish for something, better yet to make it happen.

I also see a connection between this thread and the signature depicting Bo and his ship.

That said, there will be an economy reformation upon transition to 4.86.

Discovery Economy Reformation - Leo - 04-03-2010

How would we re-do the missions system though? Is there a way to add scripts to Freelancer without editing the source code to prehaps change up how they work a little bit? Escorting trader NPC's from pirate attacks, protecting a base from waves of enemies?

If we had things like that I'd certainly do more missions just for the challenge instead of "go here and blow this up".
