Not that I like this thread but...when you "break the neck" that would sever the connection between nerves and brain, and kill the animal relatively quickly and without -too much- pain.
Leaving you able to quickly and quietly cut the head off to prepare it for cooking and whatever else.

I'm with Sindy on this one, how would it be any quicker or more humane to crack its neck first?
You'll probably cause more stress and pain trying to crack its neck before u do it, can you see yourself man-handling a goose flapping everywhere, making noises while try and get a good grip of its neck??
There is no difference between severing the head from the nervous system by neck-cracking or cutting off the head other than cutting the head off would be quicker, way to go Sindyroms

We used to simply step on the heads of chickens and pull on their feet to kill 'em when I was a kid. They'd flop around for a bit, then we could get to the cleaning and eating part of things.
Oh, and here's a tutorial. He mentions something I recalled - using wax to make it easier.

We'd use to boil chicken before plucking. Apparently that does not work with geese.

One day I'd like to do a side-by-side taste test, but I've been told by more than a few hunters I know over the years that a calm animal at the moment of death will always taste better than a panicked one. Reason being is because adrenaline & a whole host of other chemicals floods the meat & ruins the taste by comparison.
Given that...I'd say it's prolly better to find a way to soothe the bird b4 snapping its neck in lieu of forcing it on the chopping block while alive

Depends on the animal. The tales you have been told were probably related to boars and, as such, pigs. Burrrrrds tend to be less influenced by that, otherwise all of our bird meat would taste odd, given the conditions they are grown in.

I doubt it. Use your head for a moment & consider this: the fear response is universal across all species & when people are accustomed to the taste of factory farmed meat, they don't know what else to compare it to...never mind how all the extra synthetic garbage we add in also affects the taste
