I think the problem lays in the fact that currently a lone bomber can't take out a lone transport unless the nearest base is at 60k+
When that will be viable I think we'd have no problem.

Fighters are combat ships, transports are trading ships. It shouldnt be hard for a combat ship to kill a trading ship. As far as I know its not, or has it seriously been changed...?

Hone,
Let's make real life analogy. You have a knife. That's a weapon. And you have a cargo truck. That's transport. How many knifes you should throw at cargo truck for it to be crippled?
Same with fighter. One fighter should not have easy time destroying trade ship. But there are many circumstances that changes this. Skill of both, equipment of both, distance to safe dock etc.

Also Fighters never killed transports alone even in 4.85. unless the transport pilot is bad.

I remember how I was pirating in my sabre with pretty much success back then. It was not common that transports have had cau 8 though, but they werent also able to do such significant damage as they do now.
